Tesla Buys Nearly 2 Billion Panasonic Cells

The thing I dont get with Tesla going Panasonic is that from the tests that a guy was doing here on ES the Jap cells were crap and the Korean LG/Samsung cells were heaps better.

Tesla has modified th chemistry and one can't make the same comparison with cells purchased in the market. Only the form factor is the same.

The modern Panasonic NCA cells are as good or better than anything.

It took me 4 tries of just ordering Panasonic's older PD cells before I finally got legit ones. There are way more knock offs out there for sale than legit cells. Impossible to tell a well done fake from genuine from appearance.
 
I'd like to see them take like a billion of those cells and put them in series end to end in a large circle until the ends get close enough to arc. How far can 4.2 billion volts jump? :twisted:

Tesla said once you gain the potential to contact the ionosphere, you get your arc capable of reaching anywhere on the earth. I would assume 4.2BV would be more than adequate.

Thinking a little further, a single lightning bolt is thought possible to contain over 1 billion volts and several billion watts, although I'm pretty sure that must be a guess?

The dielectric strength of air is 3.0MV/m so 4.2GV could jump a gap of 1400m (nearly a mile).
