What MAC Motor to Get for 20" Wheel.

I run a 6t MAC on 36v on my recumbent trike, it tops out at 25 mph.

    im starting to rethink electric

A guy at work has a petrol bike, it goes nicely but he is constantly repairing things on it. In comparison, my MAC motor has been going for two years and has only let me down once (melted connector).

    Mac hub help

My clutch locks up for a couple of days every couple of months. I've got a spare sitting in the shed ready to go on, but it always sorts itself before the weekend. It does suck a little to ride when it's locked (like riding into a stiff headwind), but it still gets me to work and back OK.

    Anyone have aspergers? Is "weird"?

This may be a little odd, I just took the test and wound up with a borderline score, I'm sure 10-15 years ago I would have far more extreme. Perhaps I've mellowed with age. I'd never paid any attention to autism or aspergers until I read The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon and realised how much...

    Sticking MAC clutch?

Mine started to stick a while ago and then magically unstuck again (the day my spare arrived). In the few weeks since, it has stuck and unstuck again once more.

dx.com cree bike light max voltage ?

As we all love modifying cheap Chinese stuff here, I think this would be a good place to share this: As these are close enough to a Magicshine 808 the diffusers should fit, various vendors sell a diffuser (search for macishine wide angle) which makes the hot spot around three times the width...

18650 pack - am I doing this right?

Couple of observations (note, I've never done this myself). I don't think I'd trust spring loaded terminals in a ebike situation, batteries get bounced around a lot and I'd be concerned about them not making great contact. Also, how do you plan to hammer 1" tubing to be less than 18mm wide? Or...

Using a MAC with a seized clutch

I pulled my wheel off to fix a bent RD mount, put it back on and the clutch works again  Just got confirmation that the new clutch should arrive on Monday so I guess I'll have a spare...

Using a MAC with a seized clutch

Good to hear, I'm a little irritated that I managed to break it on 10s 40A, but that's life I suppose... I somehow managed to bend my RD hanger while I was stuffing around with it last night so I didn't ride today. I'll sort it out over the weekend and give it a go next week.

Using a MAC with a seized clutch

Thanks for the offer, but if anyone is going to experiment on the motor it will be me :D I'm now thinking I'll let it go for the moment, fit the new one when it arrives then weld this one up as a 100% reliable spare for the future...

Using a MAC with a seized clutch

Then I pedal :) It would suck, but I can get there... Do you just weld the bearing to the housing? I might pull it apart this weekend and have a play.

Using a MAC with a seized clutch

The one-way bearing in my MAC motor appears to have seized solid so the motor doesn't disengage any more. I've just flicked an order to cell_man for a new one, but the question is can I ride it until the spares arrive? Apart from the gear noise, it still seems to ride OK and the drag doesn't...

    Torque-Sensor Motor w/ Sine-Wave Controller Build

Good to hear about the gears. I was thinking about this motor the other day; with the torque sensor hooked up after the gears, wouldn't you get a different reading depending on what gear you are in? Is this something you notice when you are riding?

U.S. electric car maker Coda files for bankruptcy

Looks to me like they just had a lousy business model. People buying an electric car these days want something special; the "whitegoods with wheels" Coda were selling may be OK in 10-15 years time, but at the moment they needed a hook of some kind.

    Torque-Sensor Motor w/ Sine-Wave Controller Build

I've just noticed this thread. If these things can be made reliable, they could be a great solution for people looking for a "true assist" setup. Looking at the photos of the damaged motor, it looks like the gears are showing wear already. Is it just my eyes, or is there an issue there? Can...

Effect of your ebike habit on car costs?

I just crunched some numbers and in around a year, I've saved $1300 on petrol and parking. In another year, the trike and motor will have just about paid for itself. It's a hell of a lot more fun than driving to work as well :D

    Aussie 200 Watt Limit Thread

All bikes are powered, I've simply fitted a lighter, more efficient, lower emission motor to mine. :) I don't go out of my way to pass people, but if I'm going faster (like up a hill), I'll go past. Does it make me a bad person that I enjoy it?

    Aussie 200 Watt Limit Thread

My personal favourite thing is to catch them up a hill, slow down to their speed and drop down a bunch of gears until I can pass them by pedalling hard for a few seconds. I call out 'on the right' or something similar and go past (I'm fit enough that I can get a little distance ahead), once I...

Oh MAC! Why hast thou forsaken me?

I've seen people fit bearings into the axle end of the feeewheel to support the outer gear. I'm sure I'm not strong enough to need it, but if I was a strong cyclist, that's what I would be doing.

Oh MAC! Why hast thou forsaken me?

That's got to suck, I've got about the same distance on my MAC (since Easter last year) and I'm certainly not gentle on it and it's been flawless.
