modifying a 7 speed freewheel to work as a single speed

The quick and dirty answer is yes. The better answer is: http://sheldonbrown.com/singlespeed.html Freewheels are not all similarly constructed, some are easy to disassemble, most require a specific tool. Single speed freewheels are not terribly expensive, but compatibility must be considered...

    crystalyte hs3540 freewheel thread shear

Always mark the cover position first. A wood chisel, or knife, may help loosen the cover. Don't use excessive force; working around the seam, the cover will eventually pop loose.

    hs3540 assembly

I just put the wheel/rotor on a 5 gallon bucket, hold the stator by the axle and lower it carefully until it is pulled out of my hands. This makes a bang. If you marked the covers' position on the rotor prior to disassembly it may save you much effort to determine the best orientation. One...

Please educate me on controller design.

I've been told that a vacuum tube is a FET with a light on, plus signal processing. Based on the substantial demand, they are useful. My supposition is that, with sufficiently thorough analysis, the transfer function of a vacuum tube could be duplicated exactly with other types of circuitry...

Controller in a water bottle cage? Could it happen?

Yes, it does not matter if it's ugly, or fugly, 'cuz I'm gonna have a good time regardless. It's not that the aesthetic is of no consequence, but that is not my forte. It will be wonderful to have a controller of such exquisite beauty that it causes all who gaze on it to swoon as dopamine swirls...

Controller in a water bottle cage? Could it happen?

I agree with everything. I think y'all just invented Yin and Yang, although I don't remember which is which. I'm not unaffected by appearance but, I'm not effected by it either.

Please educate me on controller design.

A motor controller, on an e-bike, is a thee phase buck converter in a tornado, during an earthquake, perhaps. I am poking around in controllers a bit, lurking regularly and Googling excessively. It is taking some time to get up to speed. I've not encountered even one 12AX7 or 25L6. It's...

The capacity for discerning the essential truth, in fact, is as rare among men as it is common among crows, bullfrogs and mackerel. The man who shows it is a man of quite extraordinary quality— perhaps even, a man downright diseased. Exhibit a new truth of any natural plausibility before the...

    disconnecting controller for charging Y/N

I observe that my 'xlyte' 72V40A controller draws about 16mA when connected to the batteries and not turned on. When switched on and stopped, the current is about 56mA. This gives a power dissipation of approximately 1 watt and 4 watts, respectively. I don't worry too much about a watt here and...

Controller in a water bottle cage? Could it happen?

I have a wealth of ignorance. Although I've never seen a "controller in a can," I ain't seen much. Certainly, it could be done. As you mentioned, some of the controllers available are small enough to stuff in a can. Yes, heat dissipation would require some thought. I can't think of any technical...

Bulging caps causing poor performance with EB312?

NeilP, I've given little thought to altering the firmware. Presently, the issue is improper caps on the battery voltage buss. 63 volt caps with 80 volts across them is NOT what I call 'headroom.' WTF?!? That the input caps split and spewed is no surprise. I'm quite used to undertaking too...
