    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

I'm tired of replacing the gears on the chinese planetary gearbox motor and the cassettes/internally geared hubs. I'll be looking into a more reliable solution from now on.

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

Yes, so I might try my hand at a 3 speed hub when this one blows up.... Otherwise it's back to a casette, and replacing chains and gears every so often. I guess what we really need is an internal transmission that goes with the motor setup. I think 4 gears is all you really need at this power...

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

My sturmey 5-speed doesn't seem to be taking the power very well. This was expected somewhat. 4th gear sounds like it's going to go and 3rd might not be far behind.

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

I'm running 60a peak @ 48-52 volts. I get a weird noise going into 3rd right now. I don't change gears while the motor is running. I only change gears while pedaling, so I'm not sure what's going on, it might have something to do more with the chain-line. I've noticed the chain-line moves...

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

I meant the previous model 5-speed.

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

Did you line up the yellow line with the red line on the hub when installing it as per the manuals instructions for vertical dropouts?

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

It's exciting but still un-proven. I'd like to discuss the changes that have been made with the newest 5-speed compared to the previous model. I can't find much on the previous model though.

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

Sorry no build post. I think it runs 60 amps peak at 48 volts. It's a 1600 watt kit though.

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

Also, I've looking at the diagram of the Rx-Rk5, and I'm not really sure how the gears are selected, or where the load paths are going. It would be nice to compare to the previous model. http://www.sturmey-archer.com/files/catalog/files/85/PART%20LIST%20-%20RX-RK5.pdf

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

I ended up just going without a tensioner or derailleur. It's a 1600 watt cyclone kit basically, and 44t chainwheel up front.

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

After reading the Sturmey Manual here: http://www.sturmey-archer.com/files/catalog/files/85/MANUAL%20-%205%20SPEED%20ROTARY%20HUBS.pdf I can see there have been some mistakes when installing it. It says in the manual Step 4: ) "If the bicycle has reversed or standard rear fork ends, rotate the...

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

Another question though. How are you supposed to shift these Internally Geared Hubs? I never shift under motor load, but I heard somewhere that they only actually shift gears when the hub is off-loaded. Before I had an internally geared hub, I had a standard 9 speed cassette, and I'd shift it...

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

I solved the problem by not using a derailleur or tensioner. It's pretty tight, I just hope it doesn't break something.

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

Regardless of kog size, 1/8" chain should work for all these components.

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

I'm using the cog it came with... and the front chain ring is 3/32. 3/32 chain would not fit the rear cog

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

    Sorry, It's a RX-RK5

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

I'll take a look at it again, I know the bike flexes alot under pedal power, I just don't understand why a derailleur isn't the same as a tensioner in this case.

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

Everything was fine before we installed the hub, but installing the hub requires use of 1/8" chain. So the chain was changed from 3/32 to 1/8 and it's brand new with the hub. The Chainring is brand new as well. The chain has been shortened to tighten up the rear tensioner. And the slippage is...

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

I'm using a brand new chain ring and rear sprocket with brand new chain. The chain is 1/8" and it's slipping on the front chain ring which is 3/32". We've checked alignment and everything but it's still slipping, so I'm just going to get a 1/8" chain ring.

1/8" chain slipping on 3/32 chainring

I have a new Internally Geared Hub with 1/8" kog and my front chain ring is 3/32 for multi-speed use. I've tightened the chain tension with the old derailleur but the chain still slips when I put moderate pressure on the peddles. I've read that the 1/8" chain works fine with 3/32 chain-rings...

Need Help Finding Single Speed Chain Ring

I'm Looking for a Single speed chain ring specifically compatible with 1/8'' chain. Has to be 104mm bcd and 36-42 tooth. Everytime I look online for it I get chain rings compatible with multi speed chain. As evidenced by this video: SeO9bvQ-Ut0 A real single speed chain ring will not fit...

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

I just watched this video here: SeO9bvQ-Ut0 demonstrating the compatibility of 3/32'' and 1/8'' chain on single speed chain rings. Obviously the 3/32 doesn't fit, which is strange considering how many people online say that 1/8 chain is interchangeable.... Looks like I need a single speed chain...

    Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

I just purchased an Sturmey IGH RX-RK5 for my bike, however I'm having trouble with the chain slipping on the front kog. What kind of kog do you use on the front? I know the RX-RK5 uses thicker chain, because we could not use 9-Speed bike chain on it. However, the new chain we're using keeps...

    Hey There

So it's getting to be about that time where i will be needing new gears. Is there a place I can order from directly besides aft or the chinese supplier? The chinese company is kind of difficult to get a hold of and AFT is kinda far away and expensive.
