    Modular, Multi-Platform, 300A ESC

Looks very nice. Could you clarify which of the amps you're testing at are battery or phase amps? I'm guessing the 70A continuous is for the battery, right? And the last graph seems to show 150A phase looks sustainable? And the 300A limitation is phase amps, not battery amps, right? Or am I...

Is the semi solid state claims from Chinese batteries true?

Nope. Now the Molicel P30B exists and meets all my needs, so I haven't looked into the WeLion anymore at all.

Is the semi solid state claims from Chinese batteries true?

Good sleuthing. I tried writing all four contact addresses which I found on the website (cdai@welion.cn, info@welion.cn, job@solidstatelion.com, info@solidstatelion.com) and every one of them bounced. I eventually got through on the phone and got an email address which didn't bounce...

Where to find Amass MTE120 connectors online?

I'm interested as well. Is there any reason to think that 100 mating cycles is a typo? Everything else Amass does is 1000, and nothing about these looks substantially different. I'm also not sure how much that ultimately is a limitation for me, since it's very unlikely I have ever...

    Mongoose Blackcomb

Awesome! Do report back, I'd love to know about your experiences with 5.3. IACE (I am a controls engineer), and so I don't find tuning by orders of magnitude to be very frightening when I know what I should be looking for. What I really like about Vedder's video was seeing what observer...

    Mongoose Blackcomb

Here is Benjamin Vedder himself using a VESC to drive a U15: https://vesc-project.com/comment/8346#comment-8346 The video demonstrates tuning strategies, although that was with the 5.2 firmware whereas 5.3 (just released this Sunday) includes many refinements for motor identification. In fact...

FLIPSKY new 20s 100A tiny controller (vesc based)

Those are all good questions, and I don't have an easy answer. There's substantial greyness in copyright laws. For instance, it's well-understood that you can't copyright boilerplate definitions, because they're not "creative works". But at what point does a boilerplate definition become...

FLIPSKY new 20s 100A tiny controller (vesc based)

I believe your understanding of GPLv3 is correct. It arose out of the Tivo debacle. We pinged Benjamin on the VESC Discord server, and he knows. If it came delivered with firmware, then there's source. They can just point to the VESC github as the source, and include their linker mods and...

FLIPSKY new 20s 100A tiny controller (vesc based)

I guess it depends on whether they feel they'll get a working board back or not. Up to the RMA sender to decide if applying mains to the board beforehand is the ethical response.

FLIPSKY new 20s 100A tiny controller (vesc based)

That's disappointing, and is downright contractual violation. The GPL is quite clear in their obligation, and if they're not honoring it then it's cut and dried fraud. Obviously no one should buy this until this issue is resolved. VESC can pursue them legally, but in the meantime anyone who has...

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

As an update, I have now driven this to 14kW using the aforementioned VESC 100/250 and HobbyWing Platinum Pro 130A. I don't have a temperature sensor set up yet so I stopped the operation out of an abundance of caution, but it is quite clear that the concept is working. Whether it works as...

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

Can you explain some about why you think this is the case? Aside from mutual inductance, so long as at least one controller is in current-control mode I don't see where the two ESCs will be interacting.

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

The motor starts up fine. But I'm not sure what to think when both the HobbyWing (duty-cycle control, trapezoidal waveform) and the VESC 100/250 (current control, FOC) run simultaneously. Here's the video: https://vimeo.com/647759550 Description: First I run the ESCs individually Then I start...

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

Took way too long to solder but here it is: I soldered a new set of rings above the first set. It's a little precarious right now because there's nothing supporting the new rings, but it'll do for testing. Next step is to try with two ESCs simultaneously. I'm thinking to use a HobbyWing...

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

I am really sorry for that, but I wanted to say a sincere thanks for encouraging me to try the modification. I think I'd still be trying to wrap my head around it if it hadn't been for your help. VESC has matured a lot, and we're doing what we can to move it even further along. There's an...

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

Works for one half! Must have been a settings issue, I upgraded to the latest firmware and restarted the setup. Now it seems to run just as it should. Now need to get a second controller and give 2x3 a try.

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

You are, of course, very correct. Here's the motor as it stands. It's a little hard to see the unsoldered leads in this picture, but you can get the idea: The blue tape delineates subgroups of +-AB/+-AC/+-BC windings. You can see how we unsoldered all leads in three of the subgroups. I'm...

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

The pink lines are where we unsoldered the motor windings: I wonder if this isn't how we should have done it?

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

Didn't work. Using an almost 500W heat gun, we were able to easily unsolder half the coils, removing three groups of three. However, when we went to run it, the motor simply shook agitatedly. We tried a variety of ways to get the VESC to run it, but it was like it wouldn't advance even in open...

    BMS Recommendation

The BMS should be cell voltage and temperature monitor-only. Charging and balancing will be done externally. The BMS will not be able to disconnect the pack, unless there's an extremely strong argument for why the BMS should be able to. This is an example of a BMS reportedly disconnecting a...

Battery pack selection for self-launching glider

We bought some batteries earlier this week. Hope to have testing started before Thanksgiving. See viewtopic.php?f=38&t=114057 for BMS questions.

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

Being a teensy bit of a pendant, in the air is actually a really safe place to test this. It's on takeoff when things are riskiest, as there are few options if the glider is 50 meters up and experiences a motor failure. Hehe, not disagreeing, but here's an example of how some self-launching...

Converting 3-phase to 6-phase by cutting coils at the star point

Do you mean while starting up, or a subtle inefficiency which persists as the motor is running? For startup, I would have only one ESC active. Once the motor is going fast enough for closed loop mode, the other ESC would come online. Could you go into this concept a little more? I'm using a...
