eZip Trailz - Mods and Upgrades!

1. Got my 1st eZip Mountain Trailz back in 2008. - <$300 delivered (don't remember exactly ..)
2. Caught a 2nd on sale a couple months later. - <$300 delivered
3. About Christmas time there was an absolute bargain on a 2008 eZip Trailz. - about $125 after I sold the battery & charger
4. Couple years later there was a "new, minus battery", 2009 eZip Trailz LS. Too cheap to pass up! - ~$225 delivered
5. Neighbor got his eZip Trailz run over by car, front wheel and fork damage, got new 2010 eZip Trailz so I gave him $50 for another 2008 Trailz.
6. 2013 Trailz LS got listed (accidentally?) at $308 ... so had to get one.
7. Neighbor gave up on his 2010 Trailz so I gave him $73 for it!

Yes 7 eZips
#s 2, 3, 4 and 6 in good running condition
#s 1, 5 and 7 in need of some degree of repair

Rundown

#1. 2008 eZip Mountain Trailz - 3500 miles
Replaced batteries in pack once. Then tried 20s1p D cell 6Ah NiCd, then 20s2p, then swapped to 36V SLA.
Suffered broken spokes and received a warranty replacement wheel, never used on that bike, kept replacing spokes till got bored so, when controller died I switched to 2nd 2008 Mountain Trailz.
Needs:
Rear wheel-motor installed (my spare)
Controller - I have 24 - 36V spare ready

#2. 2008 eZip Mountain Trailz - 4000+ miles Snow Beast
Immediately replaced 24V controller with 36V from eZip scooter.
Placed 36V 10Ah SLA in toolbox and bolted to rack.
Loved the better speed and torque!
Seemed top heavy and limited range ... so I started recycling laptop cells into 37V 20.8Ah packs.
Turned into my dedicated Winter bike.
Built studded tires for front and eventually got a used carbide studded for rear.
I swap the front tire, dependent on weather! (to save from excessive stud wear)
Shoehorned 33.3V 31.1Ah LiCo laptop cells into oem battery pack!!!

#3. 2008 eZip Trailz 8000+ miles - smooth street tires (My pedal bike)
I pioneered the 16T mod ...
Replaced 20T wheel freewheel with 16T ACS Southpaw and pushed motor speed from 16mph to 20mph.
OEM controller would not support 37V so I built my 1st 7s12p 25.9V 31.2Ah recycled laptop cell battery, in the oem pack.
Later I began building 25.9V 26Ah Laptop LiPo batteries in the oem packs.
Pedal speed came up a bit shy since motor alone was ~22mph with good assist till ~25mph, so I hunted and found the Long-Yih and Epoch DNP 7 speed freewheels with the 11T sprocket. 20mph is a casual ~60 pedal rpm and can push near 30 with a tailwind or slight downgrade.
Implemented a quick disconnect on all motors for quick change.
At about 8000 miles the motor suffered a bearing failure, got replacement bearings, but brush wear is close and replacements require excessive shipping cost, so unit is retired until I find better price or get combined shipping on multiple brush sets.
(Tried wheel-motor-16T freewheel on 37V 2008 MT and easily maintained 27mph and hit 30 mph with aggressive assist)

#4. 2009 eZip Trailz LS (Low Step) - ~8000 miles My Comfort Cruiser
Added big balloon white sidewall tires, suspension post and big comfy seat.
Has the quieter XYD-16 motor and with seat fully lowered it is truly a pleasure for mindless meandering.
I added the 16T mod for 20mph capability.
An oddity, for 2009, it supports 24 - 36V batteries.
Suffered multiple spoke problems till I relaced w/washers.
After a recent rear hub failure, I replaced rear wheel with a 12ga spoked and washered HD eZip rebuild.
Just for fun, I used a lower 22T wheel freewheel, this should provide a substantial torque increase and with my 33.3V pack, ~20mph "legality".
Turned my Comfort Cruiser into my Heavy Hauler ... at least temporarily, will likely swap rear wheel to my Snow Beast ...
(Oh! Whitewalls not recommended with rim brakes! Brake-Aluminum residue is nasty dirty)

#5. 2008 eZip Trailz - Unknown mileage
Front end run over by car.
Needs:
Front fork and wheel. Have nice suspension fork w/disc brake, need to lace on new rim
Rear wheel has broken spoke, will relace with 13ga SS spoke w/washer mod.
Will likely apply 13T motor sprocket mod and new oem 20T wheel freewheel. (graphed as optimal gearing for 30mph @ 44.4V)
Controller - Have 24 - 36V controller but want to replace 50V caps with 63V for possible 44.4V compatibility.
Has low mileage and sturdy components and will rig for sustained high cruising speed (Sustainable 30mph as target)

#6. 2013 eZip Trailz LS - 1800 miles
$308 delivered, not my best bargain, but close.
I began by trying the 13T mod (22-23mph@25.9V) but later relented and tried an 11T mod , for 20mph limit and reduced battery wear and tear.
Suffered broken spokes near 1500 miles so relaced a wheel with a quality hub.

#7. 2010 eZip Trailz - unknown mileage
Abused - left outside, front wheel run over so was replaced with old rusty steel wheel. :(
Needs:
New front wheel
Brake cables - rusted
Brake pads
Wheel spokes replaced - 13ga SS & washers on hand
New tires - cracked and checked

So ... unless I want to fix them all ... to sell, I will be stuck with eZips for the foreseeable future.

Oh! Also have a "new" 2008 iZip Trailz AL.
I've been saving for when I have my mods perfected.
All components are noticeably better, Aluminum frame front disc brake etc. ...
Might get her spruced up for Spring.
11T mod
25.9V 26Ah (25.92) LiPo battery pack
Schwinn Kevlar belted street tires
Full fenders
Lights etc.

OK, not sure what the point of this thread is......

Just listing your current stable?

Matt
More a compilation of possible upgrades and mods for the eZip Trailz.
Including costs, part acquisition, durability and advisability.
Combined with index-links to threads documenting and explaining how to accomplish them ...

All of which is interesting, but as stated it's a good idea to LET US IN ON THAT!

The biggest things I need to get to is the conversion of one Currie S750 scooter as a donor onto a 26" to make a trail bike, another to make a suitable transportation vehicle of another as a scooter. Fun hobby yet potentially useful things. And I gotta spend less time trying to learn calculus and get more of it back to building.

Trailz Failz

The early eZip Trailz suffered from flaws-deficiencies!
To their credit, they have progressively addressed each and every problem ...

2008 Trailz:

1. Rack bolts loosen
2009 "thread lock" used

2. Loud MY1018z motor
2009 "quieter" XYD-16 motor

3. Ugly bluish-gray battery pack
2010 Black battery pack

4. Difficult to confirm PAS - TAG switch position
2011 separate, positive position PAS - TAG switch

5. Sloppy kick stand with rubber nub that falls off
2012 HD kickstand w/large steel "foot"

6. Crappy non-removable freewheel
2013 Redesigned w/tool indents

7. Poor rear hub design = broken spokes
2014 iZip type alloy hub and SS spokes

8. Poor battery "button" contacts
2014 blade style contacts

9. SLA battery
2014 LiFe seems new "standard " component! ... ?

Improvement I didn't realize as being needed:

1. Bare aluminum rack replaced with painted aluminum rack

2. Single brake disconnect replaced with dual disconnects

3. Guard protecting derailleur

4. Curved handle bars make upright seating more comfortable

5. Suspension seat post

6. Chainguard

Oops!
Still needs improvements:

1. "Smooth" tires are good for clean roads but too slick for wet or dirty streets. - IMO

Maybe too good now?
New model eZip Trailz (Commuter w/ Lithium) has been out of stock ... everywhere ... for several weeks!

See - eZip Trailz Commuter - 2014½

Sadly ... the eZip line has been discontinued!
No more $350 eBikes.
Currie has replaced the eZip line with the HaiBike line - $3500 - $7500

Keep your eyes open for any eZip clearance bargains ... and post up any links please!
