Washington Silent Thunder Electric Nationals Sept 6, 2014

I've got a 50A construction grade Spider box with breakered/GFI-protected 120V plugs (Standard household outlets). Plug is pictured:

I'll see if I can pick up a NEMA 14-50 end and swap it over, so I can plug directly into the On-site Power.

Then those of us with 120V AC chargers can tap into my spider box.

Awesome job Scot!

I'm at the airport in Beijing and flying in for this race. Deathbike has been prepared by my racecar builder and should be faster than ever.

My father is going to race as well on a modified Zero DS that I think will surprise many people. ;)

Awesome! it will be cool to see what has been done to the zero

The outlets at the track in the picture are 240 volt. Do you have something that steps it down from 240v to 110?

There is a cluster of 110v outlets. Would be great to have more available just in case though!

Yes teslanv please bring that!

Scott

Yes, I have a spider box that can break out the 240V NEMA 14-50 outlets into about (6) 20A 120V standard household outlets. Got the right plug (NEMA 14-50) installed, so I should be able to plug my spider box into the site outlets no problem.

Spider Box Specs: http://www.whitecap.com/shop/wc/498...AKoGXOJ5-40sGoAqZtr0oF7cUmZRnGr-qEaAmoS8P8HAQ

If anyone needs 120V power, you can tap into my spider box, but please bring your own extension cords, as I only have a couple 25' - 12ga. cords to bring with me. I'll have a couple Mean Well Bulk chargers but unless we can series them, my max charge voltage will be ~57V & 35A. I'll have my small iCharger as well that can charge up to 6S/10A.

Kingfish and I are carpooling down with our bike in my truck & trailer. I'll bring a few tools with us, in case anyone needs minor repairs.

Based on the rules, I don't know that I am going to be able to race. Not that my bike is anything noteworthy anyhow. I just thought it would be fun to run a few laps around the course...

It will still be a fun time all the same.

HAhahahahahahahahahahahaha What a great way to spend a day.
Watching LFP push the Death Bike to it`s limits.
Resetting the controller with a laptop seeking a few less thousandths,
BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHhahahahahaaahaLFPDB2.jpg
Adjusting aero drag for one last go at it. The drive and desire of a racer to go for more is an awesome thing to see.

Met a few ES`rs who all brought different types of ev gear. A Mid drive set up for Teslanv, a 48 mph 2 wheel drive for Kingfish, a jumbo mountain board and trike for mikebikerad, my two rwd bikes,LFP`s deathbike a mid drive with an extremely oversized motor plus a big top speed. 110 fookin mph in a quarter mile, I was at the finish line as he came by and the sound may best be described as a bottle rocket in full flight passing nearby. Sad that I did not get it on video. Probably should read the instructions for the camera. Ha Ha Fun Times Today.

The event was awesome!

We made electric bicycle history!

It was a great day! For me – despite two personal electronic mishaps which prevented recording, “The Day” far exceeded my expectations. 8)

The top highlights were:
  • Luke making several runs at 109, 110, 110.5 mph – consistently displaying the prowess of Deathbike V7.0 ability! That was something to see! Very impressive, and likely the fastest EV of the day.
  • Scott’s 68 and 66 mph runs on his 133V ebike!
We had a very good showing of ES members, possibly more in number than the group I met in SF on August-2012 California Trip. Aside from Teslanv and LFP, Icewrench, Hal9000, Scott… and a few others that I have missed. Plus – we had a large gathering of very-interested “groupies” hovering around our ebike gathering encamped on the shady side of the Racetrack headquarters.

Pacific Raceways had just completed the permanent installation of a EV charging infrastructure – partly paid/donated by Tesla to enable EV racing now and in the future. In and around the Admin building were two posts of NEMA 14-50 service. Teslanv brought a spiderbox which allowed multiple plugins for typical 120V chargers, and there were always two or more going all the time. The service was not without issues, and we popped the breakers more than once. Closer to the stands, the EV cars were lined up at their charging stations, one I noted had (as I was told) 100A 400VDC service!

With the ongoing social at the ebike gathering, every ES member brought something different to the mix and we took turns sharing/appreciating each other’s ride; it was a lot of fun!

Both my phone and camera had battery problems and was unable to use either device. However once at the track we discovered the Staff was amenable to allowing ebikes onto the racetrack for a drive-through behind an escort. Cost us $50 for the privilege, and three of us (LFP in the lead, KF, and Teslanv bring up the rear). We were supposed to make 5 loops, but… after 3, I was plenty pooped out from trying to keep up with Luke and was glad to be waved off. My top speed was 48 mph. Tried my best to keep up pedaling, though you know – that ebike’s upper comfort level for pedaling ends about 38 mph; any more than that and it feeling like flogging. :?

Also announced – ebikes would be allowed onto the dragstrip!! At first they said we could make runs down the feeder return, but then I saw one of the guys on the sticky track and thought – he if he can do it then so can I! The cost was $40 for three runs. I topped off my 10P pack at 4.23V/cell (15S -> 63.45) and made one solo run and came in at 45.45 mph. Later one of the frequent patrons said he’s never seen anyone pedal down the entire quarter-mile dragstrip! I was done; too pooped out to make another run. Having never expected to touch the track – this day was like Christmas & Birthday rolled into one! A professional photographer caught pictures of the run and I’ll try to get copies.

Couple of notes:
  • All ebikes touching the track had to wear helmets and gloves.
  • Below a certain time (above a certain speed), track rules required leather gear. They made exceptions for us “slower guys” and we were able to get away with wearing blue jeans and riding shoes. I expect this may change though in the near future and have committed myself to acquiring proper racing gear.
  • The weather was perfect if not hot: It was about 85°F – however we’re surrounded by asphalt, and in the stands, the heat was directly reflected off the strip and it felt closer to 110°F. I drank close to ½ gallon of water just trying to keep pace.
In summation, it was a great day for ebikes at the racetrack! It was an honor and privilege to be allowed onto the track for a drive-through, and to be able to run on the dragstrip! Although it was my first appearance in racing, it shall also be my last to pedal a bicycle on a racecourse. It’s just not practical to mix the two and have any chance to succeed in competition. By the end of the day I was cramping up like an old man, like when I would ride that hardtail FWD ebike for 100 miles.

I am encouraged by Scott’s run to modify my present 2WD for two configurations: Commuter/X-country and for Raceday. I think it’s possible to make these adaptations modular and shall give it serious consideration.

To those that attended, to those that have and want to in the past and future, we should organize into “local chapters” and meet more frequently! I learned more about people, their passions, and making connections in this one day than a person could learn in one month, or perhaps a year!

Thank you for the opportunity be a part of this kindred league! Let’s make better bikes!
Teslanv: Thanks for driving! 8)
Cheers, KF

The event had a great turn out. The best for electric racing in Washington so far!
Here are some pictures from the event (not mine)

All day Friday and all night/morning of Saturday I was helping my friend get his electric Fiero working for the race but unfortunately the motor to transmission adaptor would have hit the charger and things around it as we raised the cradle back into the car. So we gave up and just went to the track.
I planned to race the Leaf too but I had to take both wheels off my bike and all the batteries out to fit it in. I drove the whole 180 miles on electricity.
bike in leaf low res.jpgbatteries in leaf low res.jpg
It took a bit of time to put my bike back together and make the new wiring harness for the added “fuel tank” box that sat on top of my normal battery box. I got to the track at around 4:00 and had my bike ready by 4:50 but then was told I might not be able to race but they ended up letting me do one race then even a second one!

Thanks Teslanv for bringing that spider box and getting the extension cord set up for me so I could solder that one XT-150 connecter on to my controller just in time to race!

I wish I would have had time to talk to everyone there, I talked to Luke, Kingfish, and Teslanv for a little bit. I also briefly talked to someone with a geryborg frame and cromotor with the cool DNM dual disk brake fork (who was this?). I’m bummed I did not get to talk to mikebikerad, Icewrench, Hall9000, and any others there.

I’m sorry if I was not clear about what racing would be allowed. I was strictly told no road course racing would be allowed because you need air fencing. Although they did say bikes/motorcycles can drag race if they have the right gear. I’m pretty sure that $40 for drag racing was supposed to be unlimited runs? Dave the guy with the yellow roaster did 15 or something runs. I don’t know if he paid anymore or not.

Thanks for letting me use those gloves! Mine came in the mail too late for the race.

I’m not sure how fast you want to but you have plenty of batteries to go to a higher voltage. You might even be fine with your current motors for just one run at a time and add a temp sensor to them. I don’t know what size of phase wires you have going into the motor. I just bought a big heavy motor to take a lot of power but even it gets too hot too quickly.

Did anyone get video of the road course? It is my dream to do the road course.

The drag race was really fun. Thanks Luke for explaining it to me so I knew what to do! On my first one I waited a little bit because you do not get a time if you go before the green light. I tried to start a little sooner on the second one but I really did not want to flip the bike with the rear brake zip tied to my seat post. I pinned the throttle all the way at about 15-20 mph then realized my visor was still up so I carefully pulled that down. Slightly better time on the second run but my surface voltage of 133 volts was gone and at 127 volts so my top speed was quite a bit slower. I had planned on turning the power up on my controller although there was no time for that.

My front brake failed on me a month ago so I borrowed my sisters’ cable disk brake caliper. A while ago I read where Luke was saying that bike brakes just turn into a wad of junk when stopping from 80 mph, and well... when stopping from 68 they get really badly warped. It was not as bad with my avid codes. I was planning on buying some Shimano saint brakes but I’m not sure these $200 brakes will even be good enough?

Pacific Raceways wants to plan this event for next year already so next years date might come out soon!

One big well known racer wants to have the event with gas cars to race them, and another well known racing guy mentioned that but it was not a big deal. What do you guys think of having gas cars at the event?

Killacycle said they would love to come if someone paid for their gas to drive all the way over here.

For next year we are going to try to get sponsored to help bring in some of the people that are on the other side of the US.

Another thing that we will work on is getting food venders for the event.

If anyone thinks something was missing at the event or something that should be added to improve the event please let us know.

Only things missing were more people and more electric vehicles. :?
I wish I could have gotten a video of your 68MPH run Scott. That was quite impressive, being a standard framed bike. As it was, I kept having to charge my phone on Kingfish's bike between each of Luke's runs.

Thank you kindly. I often heard of the incredible power of the giant 2 stroke triples from my dad. It's good to hear electric is overtaking the performance of gas vehicle technology at an astounding rate. A rate like perhaps a decade of gas bike development per one year of electric bike development.
