Re: Which bike to convert ? What is important to look at before buying ?
I should have mentioned the 14s8p battery I'm using is from China, a factory build, 18650 cells, with a relatively low price. It's several years old now. Low price went with low energy density and higher weight for a given energy level. The previous battery had higher density cells, it went with the...

Re: Which bike to convert ? What is important to look at before buying ?
I've built 5 ebikes, here's the experiences: Rigid bike with front hub motor. Direct drive front hub motor was heavy and gave way too much shock up through the handlebars. Gear drive front hub motors (2) were lighter and gave less shock through the handlebars. Lighter hub motor is better. Full suspe...

Re: What's your Favorite bike lock?
48" Kryptonite Keeper 712, for general riding, going to the store, etc. Also carry a longer 3/8" cable and strong lock. My bike has panniers so carrying those isn't a problem. For front porch or in the garage when away, I use the heaviest Kryptonite chain and the biggest Kryptonite U lock,...

Ebike spotting in Europe
This past July we went to Athens, Santorini, Kotor, Messina, Savoca, Amalfi and Barcelona. Anywhere that had some climbing, the bikes were almost all ebikes. These were factory bikes, I didn't notice any conversions. It looked like some had throttles but it's hard to tell. Riders on some bikes with ...

Re: Off the line torque - DD motors
Electric motors, the ones we use, produce some cogging effect at low rpm. At higher rpm it's there but not noticeable. Cogging is normal and noticeable at low rpm. It comes from magnets and poles passing each other. Comparing direct drive with gear drive: if a DD hub motor has cogging you can feel f...

Saw many fat tire ebikes this weekend
Sand Fest happened in Port Aransas, TX this past weekend. Many sand sculptures are built before the opening on Friday, the event continues through Sunday. We went on Friday and Saturday, Friday has more locals and fewer tourists. We saw a lot of fat tire ebikes on Friday, most looked like factory bu...

Re: Hybrid road bike ebike conversion
Extremely do-able, it should work very well. Last year I rode around 1200 miles using a front hub motor and another 900 miles using a rear hub motor. I can't tell the difference between them when riding on dry pavement. Steep climbing on dirt is different, the rear hub motor worked better. Well, a f...

Re: Advice for starting out a new conversion (UK)
20 miles each way, 40 miles total on one charge is easy to do with a big enough battery. I'm using a 20ah, 14s, 8p, 18650 cell battery, with your fitness, weight and bikes, you could easily do 30 miles each way. It's an inexpensive battery from Amazon and has never been a problem. It looks like many...

Re: Ebike vs Escooter
Really nice scoot and the two ebikes too. Well done! I'd sure like to ride that scooter, it looks and sounds like a good design. The battery for the Speedway IV Pro is 14s, 8p of 18650 cells, same as my ebike, it should work really well and have excellent range. A long time ago I rode a small escoot...

Re: With a MAC10T, what provides is the pedelec functionality?
I ride a comfortable cadence and human power output and add some epower, using the throttle, as well to get a comfortable speed. During a ride the bodies natural power output and cadence vary depending on where you are in the natural rise and fall of your bio power output ability. In pedal riding we...

I'd sure like to ride one of those bikes.
Saw two ebikes on the street today, both appeared to be 20" or 24" fat tire bikes that had throttles along with pedaling. Both riders had big smiles as they started uphill.

Re: Full suspension bikes compatible with a frame battery
Early Specialized FS bikes had an open front triangle. So did some others. Look for a GT LTS 2 or 3, they have an open front triangle. My FS bike didn't have an open triangle. First I put the 52v, 20ah battery in a bag on top of a seatpost rack. That worked well until I stopped on a steep climb, the...

Re: Dual Motor, 20x4" Fat Tires, Suspension
Most of the ebikes I see lately have similar tires and layout but without rear or even any suspension.
That should be a very competent bike. A throttle would be a huge plus.

Re: Laser Cut M12 Torque Arms ??
A friends kit came with a very thin and loose fitting torque arm. He bought a thicker torque arm from Grin, it fit much better and has worked just fine for the last 5 years. I bought a Grin torque arm for my MAC, it looks very good and fit well but I didn't use it. To fit the bike, I built a torque ...

Re: Noise Level: Bafang BBS02 vs "Ultra"?
When I rode an Ultra equipped mountain bike having big travel and off a curb plush suspension, I did not notice any noise from the Ultra. But, my hearing is terrible and I was being amazed by the integration of torque sensor and throttle performance. If there was a crank forward, full suspension, Ul...

Re: eZip Trailz Commuter Low Step
30 degrees is 58 percent grade. Stairs have around a 65 percent grade. If that's the case, the bike needs a geared hub motor and a Cycle Analyst V3, set the cruise control when walking next to the bike and let the bike power itself and help you walk next to it, at about 0.5 mph. The steepest streets...

Re: How many watts do I need?
There are watts calculated from climb speed and weight. There are watts needed to maintain that speed due to rolling friction and air drag. Then there are watts needed to overcome inefficiencies in the drive train, tires, wheel hubs, etc. Total watts include the preceding power requirements. Human w...

Re: Geared Hub vs Mid-Drive?
9% is a significant grade, but it's at the end of the ride so you'll be warmed up. Road speed during the climb is a big deal, slower uses less total watts. Motor watts = total watts minus human watts. The lower the climb speed, the lower the motors share of total power output. There is a tendency to...

Panniers vs top of the rack bag and backpack.
For decades I used a top of the rear rack bag and sometimes a backpack. When the ebike came along I put the battery in the rack-top bag. Because of ageing it became harder to get a leg over the rear bag. Also balance when stopped on a climb was a problem, the bike tended to rotate nose upward about ...

Re: Help decide between All-Axle and GMAC
All-Axle is a front hub, GMAC a rear. When riding pavement I can't tell the which I'm using, until there are bumps. Off road front hubs break front wheel traction more often than rear hubs break rear wheel traction. Front hubs transmit shock up through the front forks to the handlebars, too much for...

Re: Rear HUB drive kit with torque sensor (bottom bracket), Bafang, Tongsheng
Pedal power and throttle assist power work really well together. Pedal power along with throttle and cruise control power work even better together. Torque sensor pedal power along with throttle power worked very well on the Bafang Ultra mid drive bike I rode. Pedaling sensor, either rpm or torque, ...
