Hello my friends, looking for some advice on a DIY energy storage project up to 20kWh (as close to)
I've been looking to build an energy storage project for years, now I have some time. I have built ebike battery packs, and am working on 800V packs for work, so I have some idea how to keep myself alive and well while working with HV.
To get to about 20kWh I thought the obvious would be an old Leaf 24kWh battery pack, even somewhat degraded. I inted to pull 3kW maximum from it, so even if the pack went high IR, should still cope fine. However, here in Scandinavia old Leaf packs are rare and expensive, guess due to the cold they don't break as often.
The junkyard sites seem to be full of PHEVs, but which ones have nice big batteries? I could search one by one, but wanna shortcut the process and if you have something to share I listen
Here's an example website, use Chrome to translate: CLICK

Re: PHEV battery pack for DIY storage?
There are some sites, like this one
https://evstatistics.com/2021/09/averag ... in-the-us/
that compare sizes of various PHEV batteries. That particular one doesn't have much specific info, but I'm sure there are others out there. I found that in a few seconds of googling under "battery size in each PHEV", and I'm sure there's better search terms than that. I would guess that "automotive magazine" type websites probably have comparison charts for various model years, like they do for engine sizes and whatnot in gasoline cars.
That might help narrow down the brand and model you want to look for.

Re: PHEV battery pack for DIY storage?
Those are some pretty expensive batteries.
Anything above €150/kWh is too much for used Batteries.
You can buy way cheaper on various forums.

Look in the Classifieds in that forum, to find other people selling.

Re: PHEV battery pack for DIY storage?
The Toyota RAV4 PHEV has one of the larger hybrid battery packs.
I'm sure there are others, but I dont recall which ones...

Re: PHEV battery pack for DIY storage?
Thanks guys, there are some pretty good ideas.
In the mean time I found a junkyard site that seems to ship to Sweden and Norway, maybe others too, here's my search:
https://www.bildelsbasen.se/sv-se/pb/S% ... s_limit=90
The word Batteri in the search box can give all sort of batteries, there's no HV battery option that I can find on the site, but if you put a minimum of 2000SEK (200 euro-ish) you'll fiter out old lead acid junk.
Seems like here in Viking land the most options are tied to Kia/Hyundai PHEVs, 8-9kWh (depends on the website I found the info) and about 5000SEK/500EUR a piece. This puts it at some 50-60EUR/kWh, so if we asume that some cells are bad but not all, feels there's a decent chance to get a useful solar pack
Now to the next points: testing gear, box, BMS solar/battery inverter, solar pannels, building regs... This will be a big project
