Overheating BBSHD and Low Power

Post by Dorosko » Feb 13 2023 1:54pm

I've got a Luna Ludacris V1 controller which I turned up to 30amps which is 60amps out of the controller. The bike was doing great then seemed to start going slower and slower. Now it goes super slow and overheats at speeds that I could have ridden indefinity at before. I assume I've cooked the insulation on the windings but I'm not really sure how to test. A bad electrical smell came out when I removed the controller. Any suggestions on how to move forward. I've got a bench top power supply that I used to supply the windings with 0.8v and was hoping to read the power output to determine which winding was bad. They all seemed very close and the number bounced around a little and would change over time. The power supply displays current and power to 3 decimal places but it's cheap amazon one so I'm not sure if I can trust it.
If it helps for diagnostics, I've got a regular unmodified controller as well.

Slight update. When suppling the windings with 0.5vs, I can hear a slight click from the motor when I connect the green to blue or blue to yellow. I hear nothing between the yellow and green. I tried spinning the motor to a different location and the results are the same.

The ugly side of aftermarket controllers. Sadly there aren’t enough in the wild to get an accurate picture. My old shop got a few in for repairs. Enough do that I stayed happy with the OEM. Which propelled me along at 33-35mph. That said you may find better feedback from Luna customers on the Luna forums, electricbike.com/forum

But sounds like you just need a new motor. Which is ludicrous. A good name for that upgrade IMO
Thanks Justin_le we're here thanks to you. All the best to the mods for their tireless work keeping it on an even keel.
