Re: Do you use an fairing or partial fairing on your ebike, emoped or BSM?

No, but we can agree this is a great strawman though. I stand by my post as it was solid. You are 100% in error and seem unwilling to even consider the basis of the error. But no one PAYS you any money to think right? I mean it's not like you are building anything that's going to cause harm to othe...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

People on the 35 mph and 45 mph roads are GOING SOMEWHERE and it's likely for work so they are unhappy about it. Well, I live in a place where streets can be fed by driveways end to end but still be speed rated 35 mph, 40 mph, or even higher. Recently most neighborhood streets which had been limite...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Everyone, even folks on horses where I live, has a right to use the general traffic lane. If drivers have to slow down, they have to slow down. It's not wrong; it's just the deal when we all share the same roads. My point was that a freeway is designed to permit speeds that are radically higher tha...

Re: new eZip motor

There's probably a torque spec for the battery terminal studs, which may be less than the holding torque for blue loctite. Besides, that stuff is an electrical insulator and won't do the pack resistance any favors. I've never seen any commercially produced battery with threaded studs that had any th...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

:?: What about posted speed limits? If a street has a posted speed limit of 25 mph then a Class 3 ebike or a moped should be able to get around without causing any blockage to others. But if the street has a posted limit of 35 mph or higher there is no way for the "micro bikes" to be up t...

Re: Burnt BMS (Pics included) Please help?

How often do you have to change BMS's using the cheaper units? Rarely. Usually it's a clear case of either overheating or short circuiting the battery leads. Almost always, the ones I'm replacing are cheap OEM BMSes rather than cheap replacement BMSes. In my experience, "nice" BMSes have ...

Re: Engine does not run but everything checks fint ?

Try another controller if you have one available. The only reason the motor would be the problem in this case is if it overheated and killed the Hall sensors or shorted the windings.

Also, closely inspect all the plugs and wires. Mysterious failure to run is usually a problem with the wiring.

Re: Burnt BMS (Pics included) Please help?

Adding the fact that i have specific requirements (switched, 30a, 48v, seperate c/d ports, strict space restrictions etc) it just limits my options more. Those aren't requirements unless you require them for some reason. Me, I'd use a cheap common BMS that I could replace later without drama, and u...

Re: Want to upgrade Ariel Rider Rideal: Controller advice?

Where would you recommend I get a kt 35a with display and Julet connectors. The regular Julet 9 pin motor connector is only good for up to 22 amp controllers. To go higher, you'll need to transplant the plug with something that can take more current. Maybe start with a 22A controller? It will give ...

Re: Suitable Suspension Forks for 500-1000W conversion kit

Although my current forks have been great I still am haunted and would love steel forks with very strong drop outs. Steel suspension forks? No you don't. Steel when used in suspension forks is only a sign of cut corners and shoddy quality. Are you using a front hub motor with suspension forks? If s...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

But what I find is that even 28 mph will mean people in cars who are speeding will creep up behind you. I used to live in West Seattle, and on my commute to work was a half mile descent with no cross streets and an average grade of 8 percent. This stretch was signed 35 mph. But all I had to do to h...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

1. Fairings are extremely successful. What are talking about? Look at all the motorized cycles that have been using them for generation to generation. And the fairings just keep on getting better and better. And yet bicycles, which were first, and which have the least power to waste, still use them...

Re: Vent.....had to dump hydraulic brakes because too lazy to hack in a brake switch.

I'm not looking for approval. I'm pointing out that if I didn't need brake interlocks on my 100+ HP motorcycle, why would I need them on my 1.5hp electric bike? And why, other than CPSC red tape, does anyone think they're important safety features on an e-bike when they don't want them on any other...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

I get it that it is more efficient not to pedal than it is to pedal once a certain strength person reaches a certain mph. But how is this an argument against pedals for higher speed usage when we have fairings for upright bikes and recumbents (like Electrom) that would eliminate that additional dra...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

However, the action of pedaling costs more energy as drag than you contribute as power, once you're moving 30mph or faster. You must be referring to someone pretty weak using a pedelec to go 30 mph. According to my power calculator, it costs 130W extra to pedal at 30 mph than not to pedal. 307W at ...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

So if no HARM is being done by someone acting on free will to improve their ebike experience then why complain? Harm is being done against bicyclists when you run motorcycles on their scarce, hard-earned right of way. Imagine a jackass in an F150 arguing, "well, as long as I go slow, there's n...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

No. Even at 3kW, pedals are nothing more than decoration. If it's a motorcycle, then let it be treated as a motorcycle. We have policies for those. I could definitely see very functional pedals on a 4,000 continuous watt (with 10,000 peak watt) street legal EU moped. You could see that, because you...

That damage is characteristic of what occurs when the tire scrapes over the edge of the rim and blows off. It could have been there before your incident, but wasn't necessarily.

Re: Want to upgrade Ariel Rider Rideal: Controller advice?

Here's an easy test you can do if your bike has a speed display. Hold the rear wheel off the ground and run the bike as fast as it will go on the throttle. Let it settle into a steady RPM before taking a reading. If this is about the same top speed you get out on the road, then your controller is el...

Re: Speedway leger minimotors NOISE normal?

It's hard to say for sure, but I think you found a resonant frequency for your system. Chances are, your hub motor (or whole scooter) wants to ring a certain note, and when the motor makes that same pitch, it starts ringing. Both my e-bikes (with different motors, different wheel diameters, differen...

Re: Want to upgrade Ariel Rider Rideal: Controller advice?

I just want a realistic boost in speed and even 28mph sounds good to me. Any advice to approach 28mph You can probably keep the motor you have. First step to Class 3 e-bike performance would be getting a 48V 35A controller, but that presupposes your battery can put out 35A. If not, you're limited t...

Re: What is the shortest spoke you ever laced or seen in person?

I have built with 65mm spokes at the shortest. I think it's plausible that you could go a bit shorter than that, especially if you modify the rim holes to allow the nipples to tilt more. I don't know of anyone who will thread spokes shorter than 65mm, though.
