Re: Thread for new battery breakthrough PR releases

They don't get Adam Savage, because they hire me instead to find out for them with precise temperature control fixtures and 7.5digit instrumentation and up to +-2,000Amp cycling. After checking electrical performance, you must access safety performance behavior. For this we load them into the therm...

If that's the case long term then i wouldn't worry.
If you had >3000w flowing through that motor then i'd be more concerned. :)

Re: Fork ends have started to open.

Pictures would help a lot. If the dropouts are ruined from insufficient clamping of the motor then they are not contributing to holding the wheel; watch for things like the axle surface gradually getting rounded by the torque arms themselves, because those are likely to be the only thing supporting ...

Re: Leaf / leafmotor / leafbike high efficiency 1500w motor

The ebikes.ca motor simulator is very accurate and matches all the observations i've seen in the real world with many motors. It matches up with my manual measurements ( trying different continuous speeds on flat land with very little wind ) very early in the thread. Also, leafmotor/leafbike's dyno ...

Re: Real Usable KWh standard?

kw-hrs is calculated by: amp-hours x nominal ( average ) voltage at X amount of draw ( C rate ) A common scam in rating is to use a C-rate like 0.02C ( IE way under the maximum load ) so that voltage drop is ultra low, therefore the nominal voltage is at it's highest across the discharge curve, and ...

Re: 20" vs 26" bike wheel, what's best?

Having had both, the leaf is gonna be significantly more efficient all around.. and more powerful. In a 20" wheel, the loss of watts to rotating gears scales faster than the eddy current losses of a motor that wasn't particularly designed for a 20" wheel. To reduce the eddy current losses ...

Okay, because my work load never seems to really die down.. I am going to hand this conversion over to a member of the team here and be his backup. We're going to do one last rehearsal, and that will provide the member level preview and generate a step-by-step playbook for the final conversion so th...

Called a couple ebike shops and their sales favor front hub drive (2 to 1). Cost being a factor moreso with women that aren't as interested in power/speed raw performance. Even with guys front hub motors are just as popular as rear hubs with cost being the decider. Ebike shops and customers are awa...

Re: Any reason to buy a Classic Trap controller versus an FOC controller anymore?

On that pricepoint, I thought an equivalent FOC controller was only going for ~$10 more than a trap? Good point on ease of tuning and their simplicity. 2 Questions- Infineon clones? And how do you use the 3-speed switch? Pricepoint wise.. not usually.. the flipsky/vesc stuff is particularly cheap f...

A RC Lipo 3rdGEN 16s10p (IMO) is not "still pretty affordable" compared to using salvaged EV pouch cells (closer to 4"x3") for a 16s10p build. Believe DogDipstick said on this thread or another thread of building a 16s for his next DIY salvaged EV pouch cell battery. Of course s...

Re: Any reason to buy a Classic Trap controller versus an FOC controller anymore?

Yes. They're significantly less expensive and very simple. They make the motor make noise ( you may want that - 'loud stators save lives' ). They're typically many times easier to tune. As for me, i like the infineon clones.. i've still yet to find a FOC you can run a physical 3 speed switch on, and...

Personally i would still pedal and have a really huge chainring to make it work. I did that once with an 11 tooth freewheel that you sold to me. If memory serves, it, along with a monster chainring was good to 30 mph. Oh wow, lol. On 26" wheels and a 11t low gear and 60t chainring, i was...

We're getting into e-motorcycle bike/trike forum territory (license required) with "pedals" more for foot rests than higher cadence power pedalling. Personally i would still pedal and have a really huge chainring to make it work. What you do with a large battery is up to your tastes. RC L...

Re: Thread for new battery breakthrough PR releases

Cuberg/northvolt recently produced a li-metal battery that has a very good lifespan.. Achieves 380whrs/kg at a C rate of 0.02, which is a very unrealistic discharge rate.. but should still be in the 350whr/kg range at 1C.. Cycle life? 672 cycles before we hit 80%. Max charged voltage is also 4.28v. ...

Very nice.. have you ever thought of taking this idea to it's logical conclusion.. IE designing a cargo bike frame, or motorcycle frame around a specific common electric car battery so that you can get stupid range.. TBH.. that'd be my kind of ride. The fun runs out too fast with only 1kwhr on board...
