Re: Epic 7kw+ 12 fet controller...or there abouts :)

... 300 amps...I did say that's ideal. I'm not expecting to get 300 phase amps. Everything you said here, I said too. As long as we are talking TO220 FETs with 75 amp lead current limit, simple math says motor current should be safely limited to less than 150 amps, nothing close to 300 amps. 300 am...

Re: Epic 7kw+ 12 fet controller...or there abouts :)

Note that motor current (sometimes called phase current) also flows through the FETs, so suffers the same lead current limitation (300A motor current exceeds the lead current specs). Since motor current is always greater than or equal to battery current it is the primary limitation on current in the...

Is it the case that all recumbents handle poorly? Or just the ones Chalo has tested.

There is a lot going on here.

There are some excellent and very detailed threads on this topic on ES, look for postings by highhopes and zombiess among others to find them.

Re: Is an e-bike defined as a recreational vehicle?

Recreational Vehicles are generally required to have living quarters. Lots of info on the web here, not shure why anyone would want to have their ebike tangled up with RV rules. Looks like Florida has a new ATV on street law that may be triggering this interest. They mention that class I and III ebi...

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

I'm using a 2P Luna pack with my Luna 2 speed. Nice small package for short trips.

I'm going to use some EGO packs as well when I get to it, they aren't quite as small but come pre-armored, and the drop in charging is nice.

Re: Atmega328p 8 bit MCU

Welcome to ES.

The ATmega32M1 is more suitable for this purpose due to the Power Stage Controller built into the chip. It also comes in larger memory configurations which might be useful for development and features.

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

Consider that both Xiongda and Luna provide a different level of service than BMSBattery. Very different. Service and parts on small gearmotors is eventually necessary unless you plan to discard it when it needs parts. Good point on parts. I emailed Luna because I need a 135mm hub. No dice, they on...

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

@tomtom50 Q128H by BMSbattery = no freewheeling = no torque = no customer service = not a good choice. But, hey it's your money. My 2 cents. I've been trying to figure out freewheeling for both hubs. Does the Xiongda freewheel with low friction? Does anyone know for sure? My Luna 2 speed freewheels...

Re: DIY Lipo Pack - Running different voltages in parallel?

Parallel or Series? To sum voltages batteries are connected in series. Parallel is only for equal voltage batteries, to increase current (amps and amp hours). 48V controllers are usually used with 13S or 14S Lipo packs (and are usually ok to 59V max). (13 or 14 cells in series). 18V is 5S, 11V is 3S...

Re: Help converting an RV house battery to lithium

If the 12V system has high peak demand, a small LilFePO4 battery could be floated across the 12V output converter for handling these peaks. But the bulk of the energy storage would be at 24/36/48 volts.

Re: Help converting an RV house battery to lithium

Generally the 12V load current of the RV is not high, the exception can be high current motors like the landing gear on a fiver. Most loads are low current, and the high current jacks could be wired to operate from the vehicle 12V battery and separated from the RV house battery. RV/Solar places like...

Re: Bafang G310 geared hub - 11:1 reduction ratio!!!

The real issue isn't so much the ratio, but the actual torque on the gears which is proportional to motor current (often incorrectly referred to as phase amps). So with the geared motors we want to strictly limit motor current to a safe value. This is straightforward on the PhaseRunner, since it has...

Re: Help converting an RV house battery to lithium

3S Lithium Cobalt voltage is too low and 4S is too high for standard 12V loads. There are two basic directions to go for an RV system. One is 4S LiFePO4 and doing a 12V system with a max voltage of about 14.6 which is acceptable for 12V loads. 4S LiFePO4 is well matched to 12V. Various 4S RV LiFePO4...

Re: Secure Braking

Strong variable regen is great for downhills, and then the disc braking is reserved for emergency and total stops at low speed. I would be very concerned about the situation you describe with things torquing out of place, in a real emergency it is likely that the braking system could totally fail, o...

Re: Lines erased E-Bike / E-Scooter / E Motorcycle

Let's get the throttle facts right. The California law, which most other laws are based on, says nothing about throttles in class 1 and 3, there is NO PROHIBITION OF THROTTLES. It merely requires pedaling in class 1 and 3. One can think of many ways of implementing this where a throttle is used, suc...

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

This motor, as all hubmotors, works better with smaller wheels, especially with small motors. Smaller wheel lowers top speed slightly but gives better torque and less motor heating. Top speed can be regained by running higher voltage.

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

Automatic mode requires a motor controller that is programmed to automatically shift this motor, a regular controller won't do that.

Like anything automatic it won't likely be optimal for every hill, weight of rider and wheel size.

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

In most cases people use controllers that are aware of the Xiongda. In my case the controller selects the low gear range when I use the lowest PAS level, in all other levels it selects the high gear range. So I can control it with the PAS up/down buttons on the handlebar. Note that the low gear is p...
