Re: $680 zoned HVAC instead of $5000 central system

Have decided to put a 20" fan in the attic window, as with several ac's running at once, it will surely benefit with fresh air. . BUT, today was warm enough 80F to do a torture test to simulate summer with just unit 1. I kept the window closed and no fan! after 50 minutes the attic got up to 104F(wa...

Re: $680 zoned HVAC instead of $5000 central system

UPDATE: the goodman condenser coil cracked and leaked. RIP will not try to fix as new window units are so cheap. So now i can possibly use some of the old ducts for unit 2. Sure would be easy to hook into the old ducts. i plan to delete 1 room, about 20% of the house. . Hooked up unit 1 for AC, usin...

Re: I put a power cord on my electric toothbrush

so i changed my mind and put a $1.32 boost/buck on an old 9v 850ma wart, so it now has a range of 1.2v to 32v. can do a lot more with a wide range. only drawback is that it wastes 10% extra, doing both boost and buck. i set it on 20v for now, so it could maybe charge a 2p5s makita pack. . did get th...

Possible to over-volt it slightly, get the choppers extra clean?
Good Q
with my Oral-B i tried 1.8v and it sounded in pain.
With a battery, as the cell would discharge, it would run fine down to 1.3v, so giving it the full 1.5 seems fast.

I put a power cord on my electric toothbrush

Seems they all have a battery, and i'm tired of charging/changing.
Took an old 15v wall wart and added a step down module (cost $1).
Set it at 1.5v and no more having a battery to run down.
Not much to do here on new years day :)
HNY to all!

Re: $680 zoned HVAC instead of $5000 central system

nutspecial i can see your point, gas is so cheap. it is worth it just to have a quiet kitchen. . I'm under the impression that a fridge is a type of heat pump, and that the waste heat is 1/3-1/2 the cost of resistance heat. Or think of it this way; a 300 watt fridge may be putting out heat, like fro...

Re: $680 zoned HVAC instead of $5000 central system

Looks like i won't be using the ac as a heater. It takes at least 5 minutes to get decent heat, and i don't like the cool breeze. I'd rather use my silent basebed heaters. . So i'll be hooking it up next summer for AC, as that cool breeze is welcome in the summer. It does have a powerful fan, and sh...

Re: under $250 solar system for emergency power

only my freezer needs ac. tv, fan, pc, burner, radio. lights. all run on dc. . my emergency power should not be confused with an off-grid system. i'm 100% on grid, except for an emergency. . i wanted to use my 18650's BUT they are in 2p5s packs. was easier to hook 2 car LA's. their purpose is to smo...

return hooked up, now 47.7 db. fan on medium speed. right at the return grille it is 53db, pretty amazing as it was 73db before. it blows air clear across the room and wiggles the curtains so i don't think it is losing power, even with all the ducts. high was 80F yesterday, 66 at 7am. now you know w...

To add a picture, use the "Attachments" tab at the bottom and Add files. You can add multiple files at the same time. Then they will show up in a list where you can insert the inline. Large pictures should automatically resize finally. You can also drag a file from another window or your desktop in...

Re: battery different capacity ok or not?

i would use them all, even the weakest cells. 5p might look like this 2 from A 2 from B 2 from C (3 if you run low on A's) so you end up 6p, maybe even 7p on a few, but reject as few as possible(keep a few spares to add to weak groups, maybe in the future) i use a voltmeter to watch for the lowest g...

Re: Making a battery pack to charge another battery

most guys just put a battery in parallel, and when they want to extend range, carry it in a backpack. it is best if both packs are at the same exact voltage, but a 1 volt difference will work fine. 1 will charge the other when they are not equal. if 1 is way down, it should pop your fuse as the amps...

Re: Ev used as battery backup, help I have questions?

I don't have an E-car. if i did, i'd find out how many watts it will deliver to the 12v battery. if that is enough, i'd buy a 12v inverter. I'd run things as needed, not the whole house at once. Don't run a 3,000 watt oven to reheat a slice of pizza! Buy a $10 oven at walgreens that uses ~300 w. ETC...

Since heating season is fast approaching, i checked the heat on the GE and it is TWICE as good as the Haier :shock:GE has a 14 degree rise vs. only 5-7 for both Haiers.. So my main focus for now, will be installing the GE as a heater, since the Goodman 3 ton really struggles when it drops below 45F ...

Re: $680 zoned HVAC instead of $5000 central system

Have you looked into conversion to propane for the r22 system? I've heard good things. Back when I had central heat installed I decided against the A/C because I knew I'd use it if I had it. I later got a roll around unit that eats maybe 1500 watts. Great for the few really bad days. It only cools ...

68-73db Wow is that like at 10ft? They all seem loud to me though, and never tested decibels on a standard box fan to compare (or much at all, beyond loud 100-110 stuff). Good thing your design minimizes any negative impact from noise for user! Personally I can only 'handle' hearing a fan, like fro...

You're supposed to put the inverter next to the cars and run a long wire for the 120v. 10X less current at 120v. i know. BUT cars in a 100F garage, 30' away my 84F workshop. there was also 70' of 14 from the panels to the workshop. aren't you supposed to put the PV AND LA's all near each other, the...

i had trouble starting the freezer on 2 FLA's that start my cars easy. why? i ran 30' of 14awg from the cars, to the inverter, and the v drop set off the ups alarm. no start. SO i had to jump start it using 2 9ah SLA's right at the ups. i used a foot of 12awg wire and it got warm fast! so it must ha...

There was not much damage to buildings, just a lot of wires down. it is easy to imagine 2-4 weeks without pwr with a cat 3. this is why i went solar instead of gas gen- a gas gen is going to run out of gas in a few days, as i'm not...
