Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Passenger cars and light trucks (vans, pickups, and sport utility vehicles) accounted for 46.1% and 39.1%, respectively, of the 4875 deaths, with the remainder split among motorcycles, buses, and heavy trucks. Compared with cars, the RR of killing a pedestrian per vehicle mile was 7.97 (95% CI 6.33...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Accidents are avoidable ebike4health I think defensive riding can help us (as cyclists) prevent accidents, but I don't it will be ever be 100% effective. There are just too many things beyond our control. Then think about motorists hitting you on a human powered bike, ebike, or moped. That is somet...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

If you hit a pedestrian even with just a 20 lb human powered bicycle at 15 mph it could cause a lot of damage especially an elderly person or a younger person. The scientific data on that must exist somewhere. People who do insurance know all this data. My point is that when you go to the hard data...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

“YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES MAY NOT PROVIDE COVERAGE FOR ACCIDENTS INVOLVING THE USE OF THIS BICYCLE. TO DETERMINE IF COVERAGE IS PROVIDED YOU SHOULD CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY OR AGENT.” How much ACTUAL harm can a bicycle or moped do? I was thinking about this today on my hike... Re: Do you use an fairing or partial fairing on your ebike, emoped or BSM?

Here's a question...does adding front fenders/mudguards help with aero at all? Would larger fenders that wrap around more of the tire improve the aero to any noticeable effect? I partly ask because I may need new fenders for a few bikes and wondered if getting some with more 'wrap' would act as a p...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

I like the mandatory disclosure in the new California moped law as well: Every manufacturer of a motorized bicycle or moped, as defined in this section, shall provide a disclosure to uyers that advises buyers that their existing insurance policies may not provide coverage for these bicycles and that...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Something I noticed comparing the old California moped law to the new one is that the old one limited top speed to 30 mph which included the rider's muscle input but the new law specifies 30 mph just on the motor. https://www.rosenthalinjurylaw.com/california-moped-laws/ The vehicle must have a moto...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

I didn't realize California allows Class 3 ebikes in Class 4 (i.e. protected) bike lane. So a 28 mph ebike is allowed but a 30 moped is not allowed? Why would you think it would be a good idea for any 28 mph or 30 mph vehicle to be in a bike lane? If a class 4 lane was built it's generally done bec...

Well at one time apparently Class 3 ebikes were excluded from Class 4 lanes in California (See below):

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

How much top speed should a moped be allowed to have? Up to the amount that makes it a motorcycle. Then you get a motorcycle tag and license. In most places, that's 30 mph, which is okay by me. In British Columbia Canada, the law for max speed on a moped is 70 km/h (43.4 mph). Is that too fast for ...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

They are not going to change their habits for us. We need to share the streets with cars, and for that we have to be able to match their performance in the city environment . In too many places, ebiked are now perceived as a nuisance on both, bike lanes and streets. Bike lanes are used by a variety...

Re: Do you use an fairing or partial fairing on your ebike, emoped or BSM?

I don't think you'll find any image of a "chopper" style bicycle with someone riding it in anything like an aerodynamic position - more the opposite, they'll be forming the closest human equivalent of a wind sock. Fairly certain the frontal area would still be lower than a mtn bike or Roa...

Re: Do you use an fairing or partial fairing on your ebike, emoped or BSM?

Would be interesting to see how well this one does on a roll down (i.e. coast down) test? I'll bet it does pretty good. It appears to be in the same class as a LWB recumbent. No. First of all, sit-up-straight recumbents don't have less drag than regular bikes. They might do a little better than sit...

Re: Do you use an fairing or partial fairing on your ebike, emoped or BSM?

This could be an alternative thread... a probably should be... but another factor in performance is traction. What good is the extra speed without wider rims, wider tires with better grip and better brakes? My avatar is "SafeDiscDancing" and I have two of the Tektro brand discs at 203 mm....

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Not always. Some protected lanes use parked cars as the barrier. Might look appealing to you but in reality is different. They have implemented this a lot in my area. I won't ride in most of them because: 1. Vehicles park either partly or fully (delivery vehicles, moving trucks, post office, disabl...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Protected lane makes you sound like its a 4' high concrete barrier the entire length of the lane with maybe a foot or two of spacing between each segment to help parkers or jaywalkers get to the sidewalk. Protected lane is more like a recycled 2" high parking curb spaced out if your so lucky o...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

What about imposing a speed limit of 20 mph in the class 4 lane (i.e. protected lane)? Maybe even move that 20 mph speed limit to class 2 lanes as well? This because Class 3 ebikes and mopeds share class 2 lanes with purely human powered bicycles as well as class 1 and 2 ebikes in addition to elect...

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

Bafang makes a two speed hub motor called H700 but you have to buy it as a pre-built bike. No DIY as far as I know. For all I know, this is a normal motor with a 2 speed hub gear built into it. (2 speeds for pedaling, not for the motor) It is for the motor: https://bafang-e.com/products/motors/hr-s...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Should that restriction be removed? Just think in terms of physics. A car is possibly 3,000 lbs... trucks can be 15,000 lbs or more. When these vehicles hit something there is massive momentum involved. A bicycle or ebike is going to run about 200 lbs for the rider and maybe 75 lbs maximum for the ...

Re: How do you think solid state batteries will change how we use hardware?

1.15 kwh per liter (oh yeah!!) Claimed. We know about battery claims. Actually they didn't claim 1.15 kWh per liter. I thought I had derived that from the energy capacity vs. volume, but I made. a mistake and 1.15 liters is the volume. 570 watt hours/1.15 liters gives .496 kWh per liter. Comparison...
