Re: Traffic Lights and Magnets

This was previously brought up a few times and ends up in the same place. Magnets don't work, although some have anecdotal evidence to the contrary. There just hasn't been a single perfect solution for ebikes. Here's the latest thread: Red Light Changer / Induction Loop Thread Thanks for the link. ...

Traffic Lights and Magnets

Like everyone else (I assume) that uses 2 wheeled transportation, I am frustrated with traffic light sensors that don’t “see” me. I searched around on the net and saw a lot of stuff on using magnets. I tore apart a couple of old hard drives and put the magnets on my pedals. I seemed to get about a 2...

Re: Where can I get 12ga spokes?

I know John Holmes makes custom spokes, but all I can find are Sapim Stainless spokes and mine are cheap plated steel and I figured it was not good to mix spoke types. None of my LBSs had 12ga spokes nor were they able (or willing?) to order them. Is it OK to mix stainless with UCP spokes?

Where can I get 12ga spokes?

After >5,800 miles I finally broke a spoke. She kept telling me that she needed attention (the spokes were making noises) but life kept getting in the way and I kept putting it off. So she threw a tantrum and broke a spoke. I know that I should re-lace it with 13/14ga spokes but time and money don’t...

Re: Bottom Bracket Maintenance - Help Please

Sorry. It’s been a while. Serial family emergencies have limited my free time. Here is what I ended up doing. First, the crank puller tool is kinda’ a must have tool. $2-$3 from China on eBay. It might be worth ordering one to have around if you plan on doing your own bicycle maintenance. I wasn’t w...

Re: Bottom Bracket Maintenance - Help Please

Based on what I can understand from here (and the Inter-Webs) a Crank Puller is a "Must Have" (well almost a must have). Current game plan...Buy the one tool and take the BB apart. Take the parts to a LBS (I have 4 to choose from but none is very eBike friendly, if all I have is parts then they won'...

Re: Bottom Bracket Maintenance - Help Please

My experience is similar to yours. I thought I had a problem with my bottom crank due to clicking, creaking and squeaking noises. Turned out to be the bearings in the pedals going out. New pedals and the problem was solved. Yep; I was wondering about them also. It seems to be difficult to diagnose ...

Re: Bottom Bracket Maintenance - Help Please

Thanks guys. This is the kind of info I was looking for. The more info the better. Keep it coming. I am more concerned with downtime than my abilities to do the work. This is my daily commuter and I am worried about getting things torn apart and then having to wait a week or two for a part or tool t...

Re: Bottom Bracket Maintenance - Help Please

Is this what would be called an Adjustable Bottom Bracket? 20150730_151212-notes.jpg If I don’t have a C-spanner wrench, I think I could use a screwdriver and a hammer (see picture)? Is the other part that I pointed to in the picture the adjustable part of the BB? I noticed some seemed to require a ...

Bottom Bracket Maintenance - Help Please

Since I was not a bike guy before my eBike (previous bike maintenance experience was nearly 50 years ago when I had a newspaper route), I have been avoiding doing anything with my bottom bracket and cranks. But they seem to making a lot of clicking, creaking and squeaking noises so I guess I can’t a...

Re: Looking for a horn

The difficulty is finding a small transducer that can handle the power level without too much distortion, and then the next problem is an amplifier at that power level, which can be done with FETs. But we need high power midrange speaker. Those don't tend to be small or light. There are ways to gen...

Re: Looking for a horn

I have used a skidding rear tire as an alarm, perhaps we need to make an electronic version and build MP3 horns. I've thought about this myself. Anything that is an actual horn itself, tends to be large and bulky. Some of the little shrill alarms are very small and very loud. One of the obvious var...

Re: Plug-In Electric Car Sales Booming Worldwide

Actually in the US it is just the opposite. Take a look at the GMC (Giant 'Merican Cars) web site. It's all full sized trucks and SUVs. 6-8 months ago, 25% of all the hybrid/plugin vehicles traded in, were traded for SUVs. Re: Moving - to WHERE?

Smart people tend to settle near water (with the exception of people like Amberwolf and Dogman of course). Virtually every major city or civilization has developed next to a large body of water (oceans, lakes, large rivers). So if your goal is to get away from people or find someplace less expensive...

Re: What is your preferred headlight beam angle?

I wouldn't think that 2 seconds is enough time. If I remember correctly, reaction time is about 1.5-2 seconds. Then you need a couple more seconds to stop. I would think that 3.5-4 seconds would be more appropriate. At 20mph (~30fps or ~9mps) that would be ~120 feet (36m). Your headlights should ill...

How about search tags? There is a lot of information here, but it is difficult to access. Indexes, Wikis and Stickies all have their drawbacks. So…how about search tags? 1st pass at the idea… Format: #{search tag} The actual search tag would have the “#” symbol in front of it. Any reference would no...
