Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Oil consumption is already falling in countries like UK, France, Germany.... chart1547759945955.jpg https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/Germany/oil_consumption/ And this is before electric mobility started to enter the mass market, which will happen in just a few years. I predict that oil consumption ...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Oil will not "leave" us in the coming decades. If we are not able to keep 50% of the already discovered oil resources in the ground and most of the coal, we are frocked anyway. Our limit is not the amount of fossil fuels available, but the amount of CO2 the atmosphere and seas will absorb and the r...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

I don't think this will be an issue as we can make endless amounts of stationary energy that can be transferred through the grid to manufacture on a global scale, Scale is hard to comprehend. Replacing even half of 17 TW requires major high tech build out at 30X the current total. And then keep reb...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

High embedded carbon energy content of batteries also raises another question beyond atmospheric emission: Can batteries and solar panels make and store enough energy to mine, refine, transport, and manufacture more batteries? Or will our capacity to do these big things slip away as oil leaves us ov...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Don't have to get ready for anything. Significant changes don't happen over night. Just need to relax, and work in the positive direction. Germans are already doing it, as described in this thread. Yes. Germany is up to 5% of energy from wind and solar. USA is at 3%. Germany does have a slight down...

How about we stop fantasizing, Exactly what I have been saying here for 1 1/2 years. Get ready and guide a complete social shift. Debt/ growth based neoliberal economics is at it's end. The free market is not functioning for labor. Humans are several decades into overshoot of nonrenewable resources...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

What does it take to make 1.6 TeraWatts average for half of USA's current energy with solar and wind and storage? I keep repeating that, but you seem to miss that point. Do we really need 1.6 TW of power ? You don't seem to notice what I keep saying. 1.6 TW is already cut to half of what we are cur...

and some (like me) also not buying the necessity of using nukes in the first place. What does it take to make 1.6 TeraWatts average for half of USA's current energy with solar and wind and storage? Have you ever done the math? We currently get 3% of energy from solar and wind. And also electrify al...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Well, a couple of other options would be some clever long-term energy storage or shipping energy from the sunny parts via High Voltage DC transmission lines (very low losses). Actually., NYC has world class wind resources right off of Long Island. But the water is 50m. . https://www.nrel.gov/gis/im...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

I'd much rather live near a fallible solar array than a fallible fission reactor. By the way... Germany's solar PEAKED at 7% of installed capacity today. For a couple hours only. making an average of about .6% capacity factor for the day. There are many days at a time for months in the winter where...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

I'm not necessarily against nuclear. But the notion that any design could be "inherently safe" seems like an oxymoron to me. What am I missing? I think he means "inherently self-extinguishing" rather than inherently safe. There would still be persistent hot actinides, risk of explosion and/or loss ...

I like the Thorcon design for it's shipyard style mass production. . http://thorconpower.com/design/thorcon-can . Molten salt reactors have many big advantages over water reactors. They do not breed weapons grade fuel (this is why we never pursued them in the 60's). The emergency controls are comple...

1) First off that's $98 a barrel in today's money, and oil has been above that frequently over the past 40 years. 2) Despite claims that oil demand is inelastic, it has shown significant elasticity during times of high price and low economic output (recessions.) And as time goes on and there are mo...

Very optimistic and inspiring. But he only briefly alluded to the relationship of energy and economy by stating that a crash is coming when oil prices go over $120 and skipped past it.
