Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

California had a sunny day again yesterday. It's interesting how flat the peak from solar is shown. Flat accross from Noon to 18:00. And how much they can vary the hydro. Very poor wind again though. NY cruises along 16 GW at 200gm/ kWh with 50% hydro and nuclear. Germany had good sun and wind yeste...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Solar pv with a Westerly set would help 14:00 to 18:00. The other two peaks at 07:00 and Midnight are a problem. I assume peak demand would be much less in the Winter. The big issue in the whole discussion of SA is that they are shutting down carbon generation without first having replaced it. And n...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

It looks like Thorcon will be the first to fission with molten salt Thorium if the regulatory process is fast laned in Indonesia or Vietnam. If world regulators don't hang it up over the fact that you can't put a serial number on a piece of liquid. It will roll out very quickly once certified based ...

Re: E-bike restricted trail access and hate

There is no looseness with the regs in New York state. ALL ebikes are expressly illegal. And they are being ticketed and confiscated. I'm hoping the NY version of the California regs (which is based on the e-bike law of the entire Euro zone) which is now in commitee will get passed by Summer.

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Germany has very poor sun in the winter like NY. Their contribution from solar barely PEAKED at 12% of the installed capacity for a couple hours.today. averaged 2.5% for the day? The wind is picking up a bit tonight. last night had very little wind and required 95% back up by thermal generation.They...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Well that chart is too coarse to show any individual days. Of which there will be many of weak sun and wind. The point is that we can extend our fossil fuel reserves but unless you want a black out you still have to keep nearly 100% dispatchable thermal back up. Storage can help but the scale of bui...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

It's easy to become over optimistic about solar for the rest of the world when you live in a warm, sunny place like California. But Australia could eventually do similar. NY will have to do near shore wind at the lakes edge and off of Long Island. And residents will need to stop resisting it. . . ht...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

We will have to eventually reshape society to allow for days long blackouts after the fossil fuel gets scarce. Or they might have to charge their EV's during the day instead of at night. Or run air conditioning only when it's hot out during the day. O the horror. Might squeeze out another 40 good y...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Great !, however, it doesnt matter how much wind /solar % is installed.... (Germany has over 100% already),.. There will still be periods, days possibly, with little wind generation, and/or solar, which will have to be supported by other power generation systems. Or storage systems. By 2022 the US ...

Re: Idaho

FYI... This is Rep king's second attempt at unnecessary ebike legislation here in Idaho - and her last Legislative session (retiring). The bill is HB 508, and embraces a host of uglies. Give thanks to the flurry of new ebike dealers now littering the Treasure Valley with their Asian junk. They whin...

But these charts all make his point that solar and wind are fossil fuel extenders. Not replacements.
Given that they have been steadily expanding their percentage of generation, that's not really defensible.
The defense rests.

Laws for Idaho where ebikes are considered mopeds and require a license. . https://peopleforbikes.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/E-Bike-Law-Handouts_ID_Revision_compressed.pdf . And apparently Federal BLM lands consider ebikes motorized vehicles so they can't legally ride on multiuse trails until we...

Re: E-bike restricted trail access and hate

Well unfortunately the open debate period ended a few years ago in Europe when they set the standard. The manufacturers are all now firmly entrenched with class 1. Which is 16 mph in Europe. There is no need for the law enforcement to have to try to catch anyone riding 40 mph on their 3,000 Watt hub...

Re: E-bike restricted trail access and hate

The whole idea of class 1 ebikes is that they are still just like bikes. Just easier. So every ride/ commute/ delivery, doesn't have to turn into a hammerfest if you are just a normal (not an athlete) person. So no license or registration required. If you want an electric motorcycle, other companies...

Re: E-bike restricted trail access and hate

So pretty much the same as the USA class 1 rules for ebikes. 500W, 32kph limit if the electric motor but you may pedal or go down hill much faster. This make it still a bike and not a motor vehicle (unless you are drunk). . The two differences are the minimum 16 years age of operator AND passenger. ...

Even India is backing away from coal as solar prices plummet: https://www.citylab.com/life/2017/05/will-india-ever-need-another-coal-plant/528111/ Many countries are wishfully thinking they can do things concerning carbon emission reductions that they cannot achieve. Re: E-bike restricted trail access and hate

Class 1 came from Europe years ago. Fortunately the USA standard increased the assisted speed from 16 in Europe to 20 mph in the US. This is the standard that is already well known and I am happy to have a pathway to legality. Right now where I live all ebikes are expressly illegal and are being fin...

Re: E-bike restricted trail access and hate

Bikes sharing the road with cars are totally normal and well accepted by both in any areas I have ever ridden in central NY, Austin TX, and Tamps FL for the last 30 years and tens of 1,000's of miles on my road bike before I switched to primarily trail riding.. Nothing unusual about it in any way.

Re: E-bike restricted trail access and hate

I believe that is a misinterpretation of the class1 definition which states that the "motor assist" must cut out at 20 mph. And says nothing about any maximum allowable overall speed. Or maybe you don't have a class 1 law. just an ebike law. Are throttles legal in AZ?
