16" Folding Bike Sliding Friction Drive

After building electric skateboards some years ago, I decided to try my luck with a folding bike to use for my commute. Inspired by Kepler I chose a friction drive to keep it light and simple. To give back some of the inspiration I got from this forum, I'd like to share my build with you. uninstalle...

What a great build! I admire your skills and ability to let the v1 go to build an even better one.

Re: Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

Hi Kepler, please sign me up for one unit when they are done. I would love to mount it on a folding bike, running a 170kv 63mm motor on 24V nominal with an older VESC version, hoping to use as many parts from my mountainboard build as possible. Does anyone have experience with a similar combination ...

Re: Using a mosfet as a switch?

A friend of mine build a switch with MOSFETs for but it lacks the connection and resistor between gate and gnd so it does not work properly. He tried to regulate the gate voltage with a variable resistor, will that work? If I add a 100kOhm resistor between gate and gnd (before the switch) would it n...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

Thanks vedder and Marcin, you provide great support for my dumb questions! So I understand that ChibiOS is the file to chose for the new firmware, can I just download that from github manually and chose it in the bldc tool? I am using Ubuntu but am not really familiar with it and dont really know ho...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

I am using a PPm input from a modded servo tester. Just found the soft rpm limit, missed it before :) Gonna limit the rpm a bit, 35kmh on a wobbly scooter feels less safe than on an eboard. You are probably right about draining the batteries, I was just a little frustrated about the sudden cutoff of...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

Thanks Marcin, I'll update the tool and firmware later. So I connect the stlink and update firmware to the vesc from bldc tool? Current control worked really well and with the vesc my small 5065 on 7s is quite powerful on my pneumatic scooter. Got a few more questions tho: Is there a way to limit th...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

Hooray it lives! I tested it in my scooter, using the ppm input coming from a modded servo tester, but it seems to work only on duty cycle mode, not on current. Current mode just turns the motor on/off and no speed adjustmend is made. Most of the stuff in the BLDC too I don't understand, but I hope ...

Re: Rebuilding commuter board 5" Skikes, 18650 konions, VESC

Added the charging port and soldered the wires for it today, but forgot to take a picture. The battery charged up just fine with a 2A 24v liion ebike charger. Afterwards, I made the electronics enclosure by wrapping the battery enclosure in painters tape and putting it on an board, so it is slightly...

Guys, please have a look at how I mounted the cap on my VESC, just to double check I did not make some dumb mistake, thanks! Soldered according to the picture above (long leg=positive) and put a bit of hot glue on it to prevent sharp edged and give stability. http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&i...

Re: Using a mosfet as a switch?

I have thought about that as well, maybe there could be a power saving mode. Basically we would only need a switch that turns off the motors or tells the vesc to lock them and if possible a lv cutoff just in case. But I guess if that would be an option, Benjamin Vedder would have done it. Still, wou...

Re: Rebuilding commuter board 5" Skikes, 18650 konions, VESC

Finally got back to this project and made some progress! Built a professional trimming table to trim the vacuumed enclosure to the right height. I used a bigger diamond sprinkled metal disk before, but it seemed to have some wiggle room in the special holder so I ruined the first enclosure by trimmi...

Re: Using a mosfet as a switch?

Nice to know it works in principle! After hours of searching the only high amp mechanical switches I found were said breakers and car/boat battery switches. Both are quite bulky and not really nice to mount on a board. I have a breaker and precharge like your drawing in my MTB and a ec5 loop on my s...

Using a mosfet as a switch?

The topic of a proper power switch comes up again and again and the options so far are quite limited (high amp car hifi breaker, connector loop, 60€ aps switch which is very out of stock). Now I asked a friend about it and he told me we could basically use a mosfet for switching. As far as I underst...

Re: Taking your board on vacation

It's a cheap t4 so it runs OK so far (fingers crossed). I don't have the skills to fix anything besides my MTB or cycle so not many tools for actual bus fixing :) One thing I forgot is a set of fresh chain linkers but luckyly I did not need any yet. Had a blast riding on the German side of the Rhine...

Taking your board on vacation

So I'm away from home right now in out VW bus. Just out of curiosity I wonder, what would you guys take with you for your board's needs? Here's what I took with me for my emtb: - small bike air pump - loctite - chain lube - allen and random different screwdrivers - powertape (most important one!) - ...

Re: Vacuum Forming Set up -Cheap-

Thanks! Will try that stuff when I get back. At first glance it looks like some kind of epoxy but if you got good experience with it I will give it a shot. I just read that Uhu acrylit should work well too. The glue would be used for abs-wood and abs-ec5 plug plastic.

Re: Rebuilding commuter board 5" Skikes, 18650 konions, VESC

While the wooden case worked out well, it had the same problems as GF case after I covered it with CF, so no clean edges anymore due to folded fibres there. Also, it turned out to be a pain to trim it to the right height. Trimming the plywood around the mold with a router made quite a mess and alway...

Re: Vacuum Forming Set up -Cheap-

I reused my uncompletely formed sheet today and it worked quite well! http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=0B2HmnWBSSdqKRkpzRGdhV2VaaGc This is the first try when I put it on the vac too early and it did not have enough sag. The left side should be a 90° angle and some of the corners should be ...

Re: Vacuum Forming Set up -Cheap-

Did my first vac form today! Used a OSB box, tin foil and an old stone grill thing that I was about to throw away. Applied some heat with the heat gun from above and put it on the form when i thought it was ready. Heating seemed to work fine, but the heat gun is not that practical for 3mm material, ...

Hm, where did you ship from? And was it jacob that you returned them to? I have not heard of anything like that from him. Anyway, I payed 30 euro taxes for this one, so might have to pay for replacement ones once again unless i fake something which seems shifty.

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

OK thanks for the warnig! Will check with Jacob, but I am afraid I might have one of that batch. Hopefully the parts are labeled so I can just read the specs. Anyway, sending it back will not be an option due to shipping and taxes. Can that ESC still be used? Looking at 40 amps max.
