Re: Cycle Analyst V3 preview and first beta release

I've had issues programming CAv3's using an older laptop running XP. My problems disappeared when I throttled back the baud rate over the USB/FTDI/Serial port comm layer. The "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't" sounds a lot like dropped packets on your communications port. IIRC, anything les...

Re: Warren's 350 MAC mid-drive (finally) recumbent

Thanks for the info. I assume that if Tesla et al. switch from the 18650's to the 21700 format, things could change in a hurry. I'm fairly heavily invested in the 18650 format, but like most of us, have been habituated to spending way more money on batteries than we should have to. I'll very likely ...

Re: Warren's 350 MAC mid-drive (finally) recumbent

I feel your frustration. Until the day before yesterday (Saturday), I hadn't gotten a decent ride in since early December. The same Polar Vortex plaguing you in VA was, of course, hitting us up here in MN. It was the road conditions that were mostly the culprit though, not the temps. Even with 4 row...

Re: Cycle Analyst V3 preview and first beta release

Hey Tek -- I see you guys are now following the 'Elon Musk teaser' strategy to announce new stuff! Does this mean Grin is also installing 'easter eggs' in the CA firmware for our amusement? (or have they been there all along...) Just when I finished updating 3 CA's to *20, I'll be behind again-- I k...

Re: Compact Field Oriented Controller, ASI + Grin, limited run

Good suggestion, amberwolf. For the purposes of doing an autopsy, damaging some of the parts may be acceptable, unless it prevents useful test results revealing the original failure of parts in the controller. One thought I had is that the bottom (non-component side) of the controller, which faces t...

Re: Compact Field Oriented Controller, ASI + Grin, limited run

If anyone here is capable of and willing to do a post mortem on my dead phaserunner so we can tell why it failed, I would be willing to ship it. Im kind of curious. I'm curious as well. I've been running three Phaserunners (two on non ebike projects) for nearly a year now, and just haven't had any ...

Re: Flexible OpenSource firmware for BMSBattery S/Kunteng KT motor controllers (0.25kW up to 5kW)

I've been following this thread for several weeks now and want to thank you guys for a very interesting and informative project. I've noticed, and wondered, if there is a special reason that you use the word "throotle" to (apparently) mean "throttle", the typical english spelling for the device that...

Re: OpenSource firmware BMSBattery S/Kunteng KT controllers STM8

The "Copenhagen Wheel" ebike (unified rear wheel hub) uses pedaling in reverse to 'turn on' regen braking. In my limited experience riding this configuration, it works very well.

Re: Warren's 350 MAC mid-drive (finally) recumbent

I'd run this motor http://www.ebikes.ca/shop/electric-bicycle-parts/motors/m3540f.html in a 20" wheel with a 50-54mm tire. With the Phaserunner, it would be very controllable, with little concern for losing traction. Very solid suggestions -- thanks for the links. I'm already running a Crystalyte H...

Re: Warren's 350 MAC mid-drive (finally) recumbent

Thanks for the great info, Warren. I already have the Giro 26 (as well as a G20), so I'm set there. I'd never considered the 'flip stem' issue, but agree with you that it can be a disaster waiting to happen. How did you convert it to 'fixed'? I've thought of the Bafang approach, but I really love el...

Re: Warren's 350 MAC mid-drive (finally) recumbent

I and many others agree with you on this transportation philosophy. See the work being done by Bill James (jpods.com) to implement a "lighter" electric driven transportation system. His prototypes are now using Grin's Phaserunner controllers paired with the Israeli built (Alexey) RV-120 BLDC motors....

Re: Warren's 350 MAC mid-drive (finally) recumbent

I grew up in Wisconsin, and did cross country skiing, and winter camping. Had studded tires on my car, but I don't think they were available for bikes back then. I remember the derailleurs freezing up, with slush, on my Frejus. That was the end of winter biking for me. :-) There is that issue of ic...

Re: Warren's 350 MAC mid-drive (finally) recumbent

Actually, it *does* work in Minnesota. I've been riding year round, only opting out if the temps are below zero -- but lately that only happens a few days a year, even up here. Mostly due to laziness, I have a special 'winter bike' equipped with studded tires that I use when trails/roads are icy. I ...

I love it ... it's like a free travel and leisure magazine, except that it's also got critical information like watt hours per mile. Matador -- very impressive presentation of data for used cells, thanks! Did you document somewhere your testing setup? Apparently you're using an Imax charger; is it the source for the data, or do you have other components/hardware that you use?

Re: Cycle Analyst V3 preview and first beta release

That's a great idea, amberwolf, especially for a new design we're working on which has the power stroke being more linear than it is now. The power lever ("oars") now pivot on a single shaft/bolt, so the handlebars travel in an arc. We're aiming for a more linear pull from front to back, and critica...

This may not be the right thread to post this under, and if so, I'll learn how to move it to a new/different thread. What I have is the following question: Is it possible with the current CAv3 firmware/hardware to have a TORQUE ONLY sensor input setup? (i.e., no PAS info at all). 1. The ebike in que...
