apart from resistance increase is there a risk of fire starting if using non coated copper to solder on 18650??
or other things to consider?
id say resistance decrease if anything if using copper, but best not to solder anything directly to 18650. there are very good reasons not to

Re: Spot Welding Copper Strips to 18650 Battery Cells

I saw they are still selling the massive FET switch. I can't quite read the part number on the FETs, do you know what FETs they're using? I'm so tempted to just order one, but they're using TO220 FETs, and I couldn't find any with really high peak current rating indeed, but what you cant see is tha...

Re: Spot Welding Copper Strips to 18650 Battery Cells

I’m doing the sandwich.... 0.1mm pure copper sheet/foil 0.2mm pure nickel x 8mm I figured this cross section should give zero “C rise” to 75-90 amps 100-140 amps with some loss to heat 160 amps max I have a 30amp BMS. 35 miles on the pack so far. Not even warm to the touch when asking 30amps. 60 Ju...

Re: Spot Welding Copper Strips to 18650 Battery Cells

So tonight I'm wrestling with whether to go with an AC spotwelder (AKA MOT) to do the copper=copper welds, or whether I should build a monster switchbank as ridethelightning did. My day job is in power electronics, so I am aware of all the potential pitfalls of building a 10,000 amp switch. Althoug...

Re: Mobipus

thanks Das. as far as I am aware, a time limited code is required to adjust settings like enabling regen(that's all I need to do I think) did you get regen going with the software? also when i tried to download the mobipus zip file that shortcircut put in his post above, it said the software was no ...

Re: Spot Welding Copper Strips to 18650 Battery Cells

i couldn't get diy plated copper to work, the nickel would just vaporise off and get bad welds. Correct. We even electroplated the copper with nickel ourselves. Tried several times. Never could get consistent welds yeah, and it pisses me off because iv opened powertool packs to find they have spotw...

Re: Spot Welding Copper Strips to 18650 Battery Cells

So my conclusion is if I go with these particular cells, a 2mm thick "holey"copper plate may be better, and the "laminated" .15mm nickel may be the most practical way to get from the copper plate to the cell. I may try a nickel-copper sandwich using the .15mm nickel and the 2.0m...

Re: Spot Welding Copper Strips to 18650 Battery Cells

I can only speculate as to why the copper/nickel sandwich works, but...for some reason it works. from my observations i think the nickel sandwich works cause the nickel heats up enough to fuse the copper to the cell. with straight copper to cell, it would only work with tungsten electrode tips. the...

copper to nickel or cell=tungsten tips
nickel over copper to cell or nickel to cell=go with fat copper rods

put 2 pcs in a jar of vinegar and add a tbl spoon of salt. hook them up to laptop power supply or battery, if the solution goes clear green colour, its nickel acetate (pure ni) if it goes brown or muddy, its got steel in it. take care the alligator clips dont go in the solution.

Re: mega copper battery spotwelder

Seems your big battery has alot of reserve being as large as it is. It also adds alot of resistance. You would be better off with a single 3s lipo with a 75-100c discharge for more punch. This single battery would have very low internal resistance and would cost around 75 to 100 dollars thou. thank...

Take a close look on the connector shown on the last picture. Are there numbers from 1 to 10? Pins 1 to 5 are for the first set of halls. On mine there was a "nose", a hook that secures the connector. First set of halls is on the side of that hook. Should be the cables on the right side o...

Re: Hubmonster teardown

i have a hubmonster i never opened, i didnt come with a controller. is there some method for figuring out which halls and phases match up? i like the sound of the nucular controllers, i have some adapttos i could use but i suspect the nucular ones are better for tuning.

yep strangely as soon as copper is mixed with anything in alloy resistance just goes down the tube..
