Re: 2 Speed Motor

I like the lightness, I like the torque in low. I'm in low gear about 95% of the time, because I'm riding over rough ground and wouldn't go much over 10 mph anyway. And because I'm geocaching, I'm stopping every few hundred meters. The lightness is a plus because it's easier to lift over obstacles. ...

I'm rooting for XiongDa. It's my favourite motor, right now, and I'd like the company to succeed.

Re: Inexpensive voltage monitoring

I've tried red led voltmeters, yellow and green. The red is most visible in sunlight, but in bright sunlight, I can't read it. But then I found these. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-LCD-Blue-Backlight-Direct-current-Digital-Volt-Meter-Two-wire-Voltmeter-PK-/310977580673?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Meas...

Re: 2 Speed Motor

How does it compare to your other motors? In low gear, it's slightly less torque than a 500w motor (but only slightly), and in high gear it's slightly less speed (but only slightly). My use of the bike doesn't need speed, going over rough ground I'm very happy with 10 mph (and this will do 12). On ...

Re: 2 Speed Motor

I took the bike out on a rough ride today; about 10 miles over very rough terrain, and lots of stopping and starting. I was in low gear the whole day, except for a short time when I was on tarmac. The autoshift worked fine then. I think it shifts up at about 11mph, down at about 8. Maybe someone cou...

Re: 2 Speed Motor

My experience of this is that sometimes the autoshift works nicely, sometimes it hunts. I'm not too bothered, because I've been expecting to do manual shifting anyway. I'm planning to take the bike out tomorrow for some rough riding, I'll see how that feels. I've also seen the lockup (can't move the...

Re: Bicycle tire patch kit

I ride mostly on grass (and bramble, and thistle, and hawthorn) and I don't get punctures. Here's why: http://blog.drsolly.com/2014/03/puncture-resistance.html I carry a puncture repair kit, which includes a spare inner tube. It makes me feel more secure :-) I too always replace inner tubes, not pat...

Re: 2 Speed Motor

20a at 36v is 720w, so that's about the same as my 15a at 50v I'm aware of the possibility of damaging the motor. But A) I have a temperature sensor stuck to it, and in my run yesterday, that reached 36C B) I'm geocaching. That means short runs of maybe 300 to 500 meters, interlaced with stops to se...

Re: 2 Speed Motor

Yes, I can and do. But the Xiongda controller is limited to 15 amps, and I'd like to try running it with a bit more. The fact that I'm likely to not use the autoshifter, means that any controller that lets the bike go full speed in reverse, would suit the motor. I'd rather not modify the shunt in th...

Re: 2 Speed Motor

I took the bike out for a test run. It's powered by 12s of Lipo. The summary of my testing, is that it's the bike I plan to take out when I next go out geocaching. Which means I'm happy with it. In low gear, the top speed was 12mph, in top gear it was 20 on the level. That's pretty good for a 250 wa...

Re: 2 Speed Motor

I've laced mine into a 26 inch wheel, 1-cross, 213mm spokes. Truing the wheel (well, somewhat true. True enough.) wasn't hard. I've done a couple of blog posts on this: http://blog.drsolly.com/2014/08/rebuilding-bike2.html http://blog.drsolly.com/2014/08/finishing-off-bike2.html The weight of the mo...

I've always done my own bike maintenance. Also car maintenance until it got impossible without dedicated toolery. And plumbing. And I build computers. So it was a natural move for me to build and maintain ebikes. For me, the biggest breakthrough came when I realised that I could use Lipos, and how c...

My first bike was a 50cc Mobylette moped, 30 mph top speed. I loved that bike.

Riding an ebike feels just like that moped.

I just did another order with HK; 4 4s 5ah 20C hardcase Lipos and a few other bits. It arrived in a couple of days, no problem.

So they're back in my good books again!
