Re: Observed trials bike designing

Yes, the response curve of a pot can be distorted away from linear, by adding a single resistor between the wiper and the ground connection.Depending on the value of the resistor relative to the value of the pot, the curve can be "curved" away from linear. Check the article here: http://electro-musi...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

/snip To have a manageable throttle there must be some ramping, but for the clutch we want none. How about a switch on the clutch lever that when the lever is pulled switched the controller to no-ramp mode. This might make the effect of pulling and releasing the lever more similar to a mechanical. ...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

Hopefully Altair can chime in on this one. I'm curious what the foot peg position on a bicycle frame is like compared to standing on pedals. When I stand on a normal set of cranks I have one foot 170mm to the front and 170mm to the rear. This is a very wide platform and provides tons of stability e...

"Solve" meant trying to find a cheaper courier that still offers normal delivery times. Vasilii could maybe call them and try to arrange special rates with their business representatives, as this won't be a one-time shipment but rather regular shipments from a company. Rates are always negotiable wh...

I'm all for this. But if DHL's prices are exhorbitant for small packages, won't they be also for large packages? Wouldn't it be better to try to solve the shipping cost problem before we embark on a group buy? Another thing is that (in my case) Canada Post is still practically stalled. I recently or...

Re: Trial riders need their clutch?

snip/ I expect you'll be impressed with what the trials bike will get you up and over that was previously difficult on go-fast bikes (enduro, MX, trail, even things like Sur Ron and LMX - all "go-fast" as far as I'm concerned). /snip I totally agree with that, and the fun part is that you can also ...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

Pete said: "I love the idea that Altair has talked about of rolling backwards downhill while applying forward drive with throttle alone - that would be awesome, but I'm guessing it would be brutally hard on the motor?" No it's not, really. Not harder for the motor than holding still. And the current...

Pete, the shortest connectors I found, that have the highest current capacity, are the 8mm bullet connectors from Aliexpress. I insulate them with a piece of shrink tubing.

Re: Observed trials bike designing

I've decided to remove the AstroFlight motor and install the BHT that was in my first bike, in its place. That first bike has now been reconverted back to its former use, a standard pedal fatbike, and it saw good use in the last month, helping me regain some strength in the old legs. The motor subst...

How is phase current of Nuc definded, is it peak or RMS?
If it's rated for 500A RMS it would be 700A peak
while a 500A peak rating would be around 350A RMS
Peak, measured.

And, in the specification sheet from Nucular, are the currents stated as Short term Max or Continuous max ?

Re: Nucular electronics - complete kit for ev! [beta]

Hi Vasili, would there be a way in the Nuc to obtain a copy of one of the halls signals for use as a Tach signal in my setup? Re: Observed trials bike designing

Yes Pete, your calculations for speed were correct. The QS 90 70H with 10 poles has very probably 12 slots, which will give 60 steps per revolution. Not bad. But it is indeed long. BTW, the torque of a motor goes linearly with its length, but goes with the square of the diameter, so for the same vol...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

That video cannot be called "trials", obviously. One thing to keep in mind is that you will never attain the theoretical no-load RPM on the bike. Today, it seems that all we see are low pole count motors, because theoretically you can go faster with them. But for trials, I would much prefer somethin...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

This project looks real good! To limit costs and time, you could try it without the clutch first, you might actually like it, the acceleration is not bad at all. And it's adjustable through software anyway. And by going with suspension, you won't need the widest tires, so the limit of 4.5" won't be ...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

I run the Kelly KLS-S which a sinewave controller. It can run the Astro pretty well but I'm not sure it would be useable with the usual motors. You might go with one of their other non-sinusoidal models instead. My KLS-S doesn't have the throttle delay defect, but I don't know which other one would ...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

Rims! Like I said previously, they are Carbonfan 100mm from China, but I forgot to mention that they are tubeless, so no hassle with pinched tubes. The tires "pop" nicely onto the rims, and they allow you to run very low pressures without slipping on the rims. (And tearing the valves as on tubed tir...

Pete, I'm using a 1KWH pack and I'm good for 1½ hrs. Depending on your age and weight, I don't see anymore than that needed for a nice trials wring out. While checking out frames, be sure that they can take a 5.2" tire. There aren't many. Check RSD in Canada. BTW, I ride a Small frame. It's short, h...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

Thanks Pete, I will answer your questions in the order they were asked. 1- The Nucular will certainly be a better option, I have one on order but still 2-3 months to be shipped. The Kelly KLS-S is a sinusoidal controller, and it does a good job on the Astro motor. Very smooth delivery, quiet, but is...

Re: Observed trials bike designing

Now I would like to address many points that have been asked in this thread, or elsewhere. Regarding the use of a clutch, I agree that it is indispensable for a real trials bike, either I.C. or electric. However on a fatbike, I don't think it's necessary at all, if the controller allows full rated c...
