Re: E-bike or E-trike for winter commuting?

Studied tires saved me from falling many, many times.
No way I could get through ice patches and packed snow on regular knobby tires.
Of course studs get worn out on bare asphalt and concrete, no way I would ride on them in warm months.
I use Schwalbe Winter tires.

I am riding on Leaf 11S second generation cells.
You probably know that 4cell modules are 1st gen
8cell modules are 2nd gn modules.

does it make sense to replace motor which has bad design?
bearing is too small to handle the load.

do not ride on the sidewalk talk, blah, blah. City of Calgary already designated tens of kilometers of sidewalks as pathways by simply painting yellow line right on the sidewalk. Before that for many years it were simply sidewalks, cheap effective way to avoid cars. "how to commute safely...?" - avo...

Re: How recommended is it to put a fuse between the battery and controller?

fuse is a must on wires to battery
you never know what can happen , just common sense , no much technical.
suppose you disconnect battery for any reason and accidently touch +/-

Re: How resilient are hub motors to wet and bumps?

I ride 50km/h on my EPLUS 1000W in 20 Celsius sunny weather all day long , motor gets warm , I can hold my hand on it , nothing even close to hot. On very hot day here in Calgary like above 30C yes thermal protection kicks in , NO thermal cut off, good design system will NOT just cut you off in the ...

MadRhiono,
electric drive for ebike which does not fail safe = does not protect itself from overheating is the one I would not like to ride.
so you ride in constant fear of burning motor?

mechanix,
so you pulled those cells from 8-cell Leaf modules.
On my discharge tests using CBA I didnt even come close to say 35Ah leave alone 41Ah , so I believe they are 31Ah cells.

amps lowers when you increase voltage for the same wattage drawn,
amps = heating.
thinner wires NO " beefer wires..." when you increase voltage

Re: Disadvantages of higher Battery Voltage

in general
for given like 1000W drawn from battery regardless which controller you use = the higher the voltage the less current for given wattage.
clear adventage
speed of DD motor in general depends on voltage.

Re: up grade a sondors thin

it all depends what you need ebike for! couple of times a/summer on one end OR commuting 5 days/week spring, summer, fall say 7months in a year. Sondors is good for occasional use , definitely NOT for heavy 250 days/year use. in such use all would fall apart pretty fast, cheap components first. As C...
