Excellent, unique project. Surprised SM isn't writing a story.

Re: rivnut material selection.

My battery (52V, 14 ah, so probably eight pounds) is attached to a steel frame with two water bottle mounts, but I put a strap around for extra security. You might also look at Minoura SM-2835, universal and adjustable space mounting clamp. A couple should be adequate (with a strap).

Gocycle seems appropriate if a little pricey.

I was charged "Li" freight on the last battery from Ping, but they sent it with some other designation through normal mail cycle. Just beware.

Re: 'lightest.bike' 1.7kg 1000w mid drive

Good points about Shimano. They've controlled the drivetrain market since the inception of SIS, AFAICT, and dictate its direction. I'm still using 8 or 9- speed and, for me, they're far superior to the competition.

Check the threads for at least one long distance tour by a member. Should have some cautionary tales. Also, (IMO), avoid Mexico even if you're allowed to enter.

Re: Is my late 90's frame too old to build up?

It looks like there's room for a "dolphin-type" battery mounted upside down on your top tube (look at Minoura clamps, which provide an extra "water bottle" connection, on Amazon). The combination of those mounts and a couple of straps (maybe three) should be adequate. The other o...

Re: Nakto Ebikes and how to improve them

Look at Random Bike Parts for a Shimano front brake for < $70. Leave the rear alone since the front does 70% (estimated) of the work. I'd be happy with your front system since I wish that it was on my folding Dahon instead of the rickety one with a QR. Plus the ramifications of a front failure would...

Re: 'lightest.bike' 1.7kg 1000w mid drive

The DNP on my 1000w, 48V rear hub system has performed flawlessly for six years. What really hasn't changed in seven years is real experience with a product being dismissed by innuendo from individuals with no direct knowledge of a product. Damn, i was caught red handed as a paid Shimano shill :lol...

Re: 'lightest.bike' 1.7kg 1000w mid drive

DD as stated; haven't tried FW system with mid-drive because all are cassettes. Sorry DNP didn't work for you. I have an 11-34 coming. Maybe I'll try it in a mid-drive for hoots.

Re: Is my late 90's frame too old to build up?

IMO, the biggest problem with mid-drives on FS frames is whether the motor can "nest" on the left side or if some protrusion will prevent it. It appears that your frame is the exception and this will not be a problem. I've been riding a BBS02-equipped steel hardtail off road for six years ...

Re: Options for fixing over filed axle dropout?

I watched the guy do the job on my bike which required that he cut off both dropouts, put the frame in a jig then carefully weld both dropouts on the frame. He wasn't running around, just working carefully and it took him 45 - 60 minutes. The new parts worked perfectly for a long time until the bike...

Re: Options for fixing over filed axle dropout?

I had a broken steel dropout (bike was at least 20 years old) that our local framebuilder repaired for $75 since he had some extra dropouts and just charged for one hour labor.

Re: Options for fixing over filed axle dropout?

As COAR stated, probably OK as is, but I would add two good torque arms, check regularly and don't employ regen if the system allows it.

M1Sportechnik if 50 or so mph, good suspension, mid-drive and a US dealer is of interest.
