Re: under $250 solar system for emergency power

The last 3 off grid systems I've set up for others have all been 48 VDC, the last 24 VDC system, maybe 8 years ago. The only time I mess with 12 is some sort of RV setup. But for what you have invested, you have a great bang for the buck! As you know, in a total outage, ANY amount of power is so muc...

Re: hybrid biz plane

I've said it before, maybe here can't remember, but a hybrid power system like my PluginPrius has would be great in an airplane. Use all the e and ICE power for takeoff, once aloft and cruising, just the ICE, with resultant economy gains as it could be a lot smaller then if it had to handle 100% of ...

Re: hybrid biz plane

That's the one. I'd be real interested to see how the entire concept of having a ICE, of any kind, drive a generator that powers an electric motor, pencils out, as compared to simply driving the fans directly. Of course diesel electric locomotives have been doing this for years, so there must be som...

Re: Got my butt kicked today

I'm doing fine, the big lump I had on my forehead has gone down, like a golf ball sliced in half, that big! Best of all, I closely inspected the bike and it is unscathed, other then the BBSHD display, which got knocked sideways a bit, due to the funky way and place I had to mount it. NOT on the hand...

Re: Got my butt kicked today

As to the winter helmet concept: any welding supply store has fleece lined skull cap type hard hat liners, that's my plan as of now. I was on a crane job today, and had a delay arise, and rather then ride 4 miles back to my car at the crane yard while the delay got resolved, I asked for a ride. It w...

Re: Got my butt kicked today

Ice and two wheels just sucks. I guess bicycle tires with their exceptionally high surface loading work well with studs, but i have not tried em. What part of the country do you do rigging work at? Pocatello/Idaho Falls area Now that I think about it....this is my first winter of TOWN riding, thoug...

Got my butt kicked today

The bleeding is almost stopped, almost, probably should get a couple stitches but screw it. Today in a small town 30 miles from my home base, I had a couple crane jobs. With a 2 hour interval between them, so custom made for getting the crane dingy ebike out and run some errands and eat lunch. My fi...

Shut down my hydro

Just right this year, I try and extend it as long as I can, and experience has shown I can do so until we get several nights in a row with low teens temps, near single digits. One year I pushed it a bit too far...., and it froze up and broke the cast aluminum housing that holds the Pelton wheel, nev...

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

As a former hang glider and ultralight pilot, though now a fixed wing "conventional" pilot for the last 28 years or so (though experimental/homebuilt category) I HATE to hear some spam can Cessna pilot denigrate flex wings of any type, and I always call them out on it! They may not know my past flyi...

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

All the reports I've heard on the stuff is positive. The only bad, those skilled in conventional aircraft coverings have to keep in mind it's different in a lot of ways. Not more difficult, just different then working with ceconite etc. Some don't like the partial see through of it, the air frame ma...

Re: Giant pot hole makes me crash

I was off road today, and hit some mud with a bit of snow over it, plus it was steep. I made it up a fair ways, thanks to the fat soft tires on my Sturgis Bullet. When I got off to push after finally losing traction, it was all I could do to keep my footing, it was super slick, I was amazed I made i...

Re: Prius plug in

I've been taking the interstate on my commute and driving 70+mph more often, due to running the risk of getting stuck behind a school bus on the secondary 45 mph road I use all summer. Plus it's colder, so the ICE fires up to pre heat the engine regardless of traction battery SOC. At my first fill u...

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

Oratex for the covering? I couldn't tell by that quick shot of the roll. No paint or other coatings required, unlike virtually every other system out there. You save a ton of time plus don't need a paint booth. I've covered 5 aircraft, and all I can say about the process is anything to speed things ...

Re: Giant pot hole makes me crash

I always ride with a backpack and spare tire tube with tools in case I ever blow a tire due to pothole or glass. I used to carry a patch kit, until the first time I needed it. I had a pinch flat, trying to run too low of pressure on my e Montague's tires, and was about 5 miles from my campsite in a...

Re: Torque assist or using throttle, which is more efficient?

It's apples to oranges comparing our two different rides, I have a display that shows voltage and watts being consumed, he has just a percent of charge left gauge. Different size batteries, different voltages etc. I believe his Haibike has 3 assist levels? He rides in ECO, pretty sure that's the low...

Re: Large hydro ranch system

I was not at all a part of that, but got a garbled account of it having something to do with the automatic waste gate (I think that's the right term), something anyway to do with the device that controls the turbine speed by reducing or increasing the water flow, in order to keep the voltage produce...

Re: Large hydro ranch system

That's a pretty big system. One other possible choice might be Nickel-iron batteries (Edison cells). These last nearly forever with an occasional electrolyte change. https://ironedison.com/nickel-iron-ni-fe-battery Yes, I've heard good things about them also. But..... $38,000.00+ for a 1000 AH 48V ...

Re: Easy Motion Atom Lynx 6 27.5 Pro the no-brainer choice over the Turbo Levo?

My LBS sells Levo's, and I got to ride one the other day when I had to drop my crane off for some tire work. I needed to get back to my crane yard across town, to where my car was parked. Knowing the shop owner, and it being a small friendly town, I got to ride off with minimal BS. After my tweaked ...

My thoughts exactly...... I pretty much knew the responses would be about what I've seen so far, now, the next time I'm riding with this guy and we start this discussion again, I'll pull up this thread (he doesn't hang out here) and show it to him, it STILL won't change his mind, he's convinced he's...

Re: Large hydro ranch system

To no surprise, it's looking like the best bang for the ranch's buck for a replacement battery, is going to be a brand new fork lift battery. Can't beat, yet, the cost effectiveness of "good" old flooded lead acid for very large off grid systems. A 48 VDC 1340 AH (at 20 hour rate) battery that weigh...

Torque assist or using throttle, which is more efficient?

Riding 20 miles of trail yesterday on my BBSHD/ Sturgis Bullet fatbike combo, with my PAS (cadence sensed) turned as usual to ZERO, and using my thumb throttle as needed to augment my always moving legs, with a buddy who is on his Haibike and it's torque sensing assist/no throttle. He is convinced h...

Re: Giant pot hole makes me crash

My first crash trail riding in quite a while: we are in the last few weeks, if not days, of riding here. There is snow on the ridge behind me, and already snow has fallen at my place, but then melted and dried off. I hit a rare stretch of the rocky trail I was on (NOT a mountain bike single track, a...
