Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@aleks68 those aren't failures or error codes. It's the same as any "about" page. Simply tells you what versions of everything you have, pack voltage etc. The checksum is an error check you can use to make sure the program was uploaded to the controller correctly. Sent from my SM-N770F usi...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@jrory I'd say it seems like your logical next step is to install a jumper. I'm guessing if it didn't work for you then one actually just connects to the shield.

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Hey Sander, I didn't let the copper very near any terminals. Basically kept it below the bosses that the terminals are on, and the terminals themselves had tape (and liquid tape) right up to the contact patch. Taped up Controller.jpg Whenever the stator current exceeds its peak current, it makes an ...

Re: Let's hear you vent

...make a foolish mistake... Haha oh man. I used to have the Curtis 1420 DC-DC converter on my bike without a remote wire, so if my pack's safety SO switch was on, it was always providing 12v power. Even with nothing on to draw power it still drew enough of a leakage current that it was slowly drai...

Let's hear you vent

Ok, building or converting these machines is so satisfying when the job is done and you're ripping along on what feels like the future. But we all know that somewhere along the way, it probably got real ugly. What was or is the hardest part of your build(s)? For me, getting my motorcycle all built a...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

No errors before the power cycle? That's strange if it doesn't have an error but still requires a power cycle. Overall, there are quite a few limits in the program that would trip the unit off, but I expect to see an error in DVT that tells you which one tripped you off. From the tuning perspective:...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Seems like this thread is about the best place to put this update, new threads wouldn't see the same traffic. After all the tuning, I always had bad EMI contaminating my sin/cos encoder lines and was still using bypass capacitors to dampen the noise. Double shielded cables, and still, no amount of P...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Mind inserting a screenshot of your motor parameters window? Got 4 pole pairs in there and not 5, 6 or 8? I'm guessing now your "random" image included accel or decel speeds, and your "ring" trace was at a relatively constant speed, but both are regularly rotating in perceived an...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Interesting. At this point someone probably has a perfect answer but I don't know what's truly happening. I do feel like the trace was supposed to be taken while in either forward or reverse, but I could be wrong. Easy to try them though. Secondly, that ring seems like it's correctly taking readings...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Looks like you're well on your way even if you're not getting the right values yet. Three possible suggestions so far, sorry if they seem to rudimentary but we should check these boxes. 1. Are you spinning fast enough? A drill should do it. 2. Check the forward reverse directions. Simply flip your &...

Have you already gone through the sevcon app note? https://www.e-kart.fr/images/stories/technique/SEVCON/sevcon-app-note-pmac.pdf If you can't use the link then google for "Sevcon app note pmac" Basically, if you were trying to figure out the encoder angle to get started (including swappin...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Hey @ingo sorry I didn't catch your earlier posts. Glad you figured it out. Just for reference, my setup was looking similar with gains below 1! I was surprised your system actually ran without instantly tripping at 6! So, yea I'd say you should be pretty good by the time you drop the P-I gains down...

Re: Sevcon Gen 4 Errors and Solutions thread

Hello Darsey, if I understand you correctly, you have shielded the B-lines? How so? If you do not put B- on the chassis, I would guess you have more noise on the frame!? What safety advantage do you have by not connecting the frame to B-? (I guess you don't have a very high traction battery voltage...

Re: Sevcon Gen 4 Errors and Solutions thread

Hey @buddhafragt. B- is not grounded to frame at any point for safety redundancy but is the base point for all of the high voltage stuff run off the controller. (Though lots of systems do have a frame grounded b-) It's a bit misleading when I called it "ground bounce". In the end, I was ab...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Hi @ingo, I'm with you so far. Do you have any logic cables? Typically, on a motorcycle you'll have a red "run" switch for your right thumb to meet automotive standards and pass a technical inspection. Lol to "cut off the fuel supply" in Canadian standards. I set that to the forw...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@ingo that still looks like interference noise. Especially given the earlier comment that it looks like the offset is changing when current is applied. I could show you countless traces that looked like that when I learned the hard way. Remind us how it's hooked up? Do you have a picture with the ph...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@rider119 you'll need a power supply or battery to power it with at least the minimum operating voltage, and basic wiring harness to connect your serial cable canbus and B+/B- leads pins to a couple of the harness pins to simulate key voltage. I've never tried to hook up one with ONLY those connecti...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

There is a controller hardware specific requirement to make the gen 4 controller compatible with sin-cos encoders. So that's one place where there's a hardware specific requirement. I assume that's probably a similar requirement for both size 4 and 6 models.

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@riwi77 haha yea that's a creepy feeling when she takes off. Honestly not sure what the differences are behind the scenes between the two DCF files, if there is one. I've only ever worked with my size 6, but there is a dcf compare tool in the software, which outputs a CSV file listing the difference...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Noise?

Check that not only are encoder, main battery leads and phase leads shielded, but absolutely all B- wires are shielded as well. (I assume your pack and controller are floating in comparison to frame)
