Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

The 3kw system doesn't look that powerful. The 6kw is shaft driven (geared?) with closed loop cooling by the looks of it.

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

Lots seem to go for the seaking. But different set up.

Some inspiration - Kai Lenny shows how it's done.

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

Ps. I'd take the straps off. If you didn't already. They're not position forward enough for powered board and will get in the way.

Advice when learning (kite foil) is generally to take back strap off to allow back foot forward to help keep weight forward over centre of lift.

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

I would give yourself a break! You did great. If you've ever tried kite foiling (for which your board is designed), it takes several hours of falling in before it clicks. I agree a bigger board is easier to start, but ultimately you are riding the foil not the board. And you were able to get to that...

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

@waterfox

Like your design. Was thinking of screwing down through aluminium tube too.

Looks like you have nice aluminium conical tail piece? Did you make or buy? (Or is this spray on 3d print?)

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

Thanks all. Gutted I ordered a 10mm shaft.

More haste, less speed! (More cost!)

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

My ring was 6mm, leaving 8mm when removed. :( Could swap motor for 700kv with 8mm shaft (from my 650kv with 10mm) but wondering how easy to reshape either part, without assymetry. I think @hiorth ran the motor at speed and filed down...??? Tried taking neugart apart but think coupling is glued or he...

SSS 56104 500kV
Neugart PLE40 i=8

@waterfox, @hiorth

Any advise for matching 10mm SSS shaft to 8mm neugart?

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

Strength Ok I take it?

No problems with heat?

I was reading that pla less good with higher temperatures and tends to decompose over time.

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

@dirkdiger

My neugart had a 4mm insert too.

Popped out after a bit of fiddling with a flat screw driver under/down side (make sure you loosen the clamp!)

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

@Hiorth what max speed do you estimate you got to with your set-up? (Interested to estimate the drag factor on theoretical max speed) Are you at full voltage when up and foiling or do you have to take off some throttle once up? I reckon 500kv is a safe bet to ensure you get up. After much deliberati...

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

Glad to hear board angle helps with ride, presumably mostly during take off? How did you find it once the speed at levelled? Did you find the nose down? (I still think having a positive lift for both wings (rather than typical positive negative or positive neutral set up) and a bigger rear wing than...

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

Has anyone considered a paddle to assist as per SUP foil? Reckon you can get the first 5mph by paddling . Cf assisted e bikes. Not as elegant but every W helps at lift off. Allows the set up to be optimised for higher speeds. I'm intrigued by the contra coaxial "for fun" idea. As well as canard foil...

Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

Isn't this for 20,000 hrs running life? I probably have my rose-tinted reading specs on again!

Wider units, capable of sustaining higher torques, will create substantially more drag won't they?

Anyway, 60 euro to find out!

Below seems like the right sort of gearbox spec to me - you never know with second hand parts of course. Re: Electric Hydrofoil/E-Foil

Very well done guys. Impressive. PS. More food for foil thought. "Canard" foil set up looks like a good idea to me for powered foils. Main foil at rear, stabilizer at front giving positive lift rather than negative. Means positive lift on both foils (so less thrust required for take off) and less fr...
