Re: JDMopar's KHS BBS02 Mid-Drive Build Thread

Sorry to leave this thread orphaned for so long. I've been quite busy, but I have finished the bike and have put about 350 miles on it. I was beating the crap out of it so actually I managed to stretch the chain to replacement spec (~1/16" over 24 links) in 300 miles. I'm taking it much easier now a...

Re: Another Seat Rail Bites The Dust

Yeah that's a heck of a lever you're making out of the rails. You might consider a setback seatpost. Thomson is perhaps the best seatpost manufacturer or close to it, but you pay for it. Other manufacturers make setback seatposts as well. This may allow you to place the clamp more in the center of t...

Re: Best double suspension base for XC in a bafang

Edit: l will leave my original comment below but i guess with the bb90 the anthem is incompatible with a bbshd. Sorry. Edit2: Now I'm confused, it looks like the Anthem 3 is bb90 but the other levels are Shimano press fit, for which there are bbshd adapters available. I'm guessing your looking for b...

Re: JDMopar's KHS BBS02 Mid-Drive Build Thread

I have received my Luna order, and I can report that the order is complete and VERY well and safely packed. So far I'm pleased with their service and also pleased that such an online store exists to help newbies like me who just want to enter the world of e-bikes without a ton of DIY. Normally I lov...

Re: JDMopar's KHS BBS02 Mid-Drive Build Thread

Time for a little update, even though my progress barely warrants an update. I'm still waiting on the motor and battery from Luna. That's taking a little longer than expected but I don't care at all because for some reason almost every other one of my orders is taking even longer. Outside Outfitters...

Re: Tire Size recommendation for commuting

For rough pavement conditions: Widest tire your frame does clear, widest recommended rim width for your tire. Suspension is a must if you ride fast on rough surfaces. Yet, the suspension or the tire can’t compensate for one another. When you drop your bike from 12 in it should not bounce twice or a...

Re: Tire Size recommendation for commuting

Have you thought about a good full suspension bike and narrower tires? Maybe a nice all-mountain or enduro frame and fork. With *quality* damping on the terrain you ride on, I bet you could run 2.2" tires at 50 psi and be fine. You can run the shocks at lower air pressure too because you aren't moun...

Re: Rapid Rise Rear Derailleur

In concept they're a neat idea. As said above, finicky with cable tension. They don't work very well with anything less than perfectly clean cables and housing and a healthy drivetrain. Once the derailleurs develop any bushing play, the shifting goes to crap. That'll happen eventually with standard ...

Re: First build questions: commuter road ebike (mid-mount)

I'm still a beginner on the road to a BBS02 build of my own so I won't offer e-bike specific advice. But definitely decide if you can do a flat bar hybrid instead of a drop bar road bike. On long rides, drop bars can be nice but on a properly fit flat bar (maybe with bar ends if you want) should do ...

Re: Chromoly vs aluminum rear rack for battery packs?

I had a topeak aluminium for years. I tried to load it under the top weight recommended and paíd special attention at bumps. I read people claiming to have broken the same rack I used within a week. Judging their comments I can assure they were really careless. The metal is important, the quality o...

Re: My DIY studed tire build

Those look freakin awesome. I just ordered some 700x40c studded Nokian A10s $58 a pair for my gravel grinder, otherwise I absolutely would be doing this to my 650b bike (for which studded tires are $85...apiece). Enjoy those things.

For anyone that doesn't like the Terrex....I have one question. Have you personally touched a current production Mongoose Terrex and looked at the quality of the welds and the construction of the bike? If not you should retract your criticism until you do. If you have and you don't like the Terrex ...

Re: Best donor frame to build an electric bike & getting sta

Just one suggestion. Old Specialized Hard Rock steel frame, rides good, nearly bombproof, can pick them up for pennies on the dollar in good "were hardly ever ridden" shape oftentimes. I put a cheapo 9C clone motor on one, a pair of Kool-stops and scared up a decent set of used suspension forks for...

Most of your advice I'm on board with, except for buying a Walmart bike. I'm sorry but personally I don't think that's ever a good idea *ducks the rocks*. As a bicycle mechanic with 8 years experience, I can say without doubt that quality control on those bikes is awful, they are made from heavy poo...

Re: Keep battery warm in the winter

Hell, you are a tough individual to ride in those temps. But I guess I plan to as well...so I'm interested in this. Of course you'll have the battery inside while charging, and I wonder if it's heat from charging and subsequently discharging during your commute will keep the battery sufficiently war...

Re: Marin San Rafael Euro frame-up TSDZ2 powered build

I will add one thing after looking at your wheel lacing more closely. The "heads out" spokes 3-cross pattern should be 'under/under/over'. That is, find a spoke with it's head facing out from the hub and follow the spoke toward the rim. It should go under the first and second spokes, and then it mus...

Glad I clicked on this thread, you're doing some quality work here. As an ex-bike shop mechanic (not fired haha), I can say you'd probably be hired on the spot. Course that probably comes as no surprise given your Porsche background, but believe me I know some good car mechanics who just don't "get"...

Re: JDMopar's KHS BBS02 Mid-Drive Build Thread

Thanks amberwolf, I think what I can do is drill and tap the dropouts for the bolt threads (M5 x 0.8 ), then use a disc-specific rack to clear the caliper. Then just to be safe, I'll use long bolts that thread past the inside of the dropout enough to put a nylon locknut on the other side. The dropou...

Re: Next time you hear e-Bikes are "cheating"

I was checking out the new bike trails here today and pulled off onto a lookout where an an elderly Lycra road bike guy was sitting on a bench. He looked over at me and my bike and told me I was a cheater. I nodded and replied that I might be a cheater but since I am disabled and in poor health my ...
