Re: Tempted to lick my 50 volt battery

You would get a horrifyingly painful burn on your tongue. People can get away with touching their tongue onto a 9V battery because the amps are so low.

A better experiment would be to touch your battery to a raw chicken breast.

Re: Belt + 3-speed IGH + Seattle Hills = TSDZ2, BBS02, BBSHD, or mistake?

I don't know if it's a good idea or a bad one. For hill climbing, put on the smallest chainring that will fit on your selected drive unit. The fact you want to convert a belt drive complicates things. The TDSZ2 will climb very steep hills, but because it has less power than the other two you mention...

I assume you are talking about using tubeless tires on a hubmotor. If yes, the edge sealant will not hurt heat in the motor.

Re: Isolation between cells needed?

The cells in the center of the pack will run hotter than the cells at the edge, which can passively shed "some" heat. This means the cells that are not on the edge will degrade sooner, and the pack will have reduced capacity when those cell degrade. As a general rule, I am not a fan of hot...

Re: Stator/magnet swept area

If you confine yourself to radial-flux in-runners, like the popular Leaf 35mm, MXUS 45mm, and QS 50mm wide stator examples, I agree that swept face area is a good indicator of power potential, if all other factors are the same. (These three examples use the same 205mm diameter lamination stacks) The...

Re: Stator/magnet swept area

The entire swept face of the rotor and stator of an axial-flux can be working magnets plus electro-magnet material, but the motor mass near the center has trouble shedding heat. If width isn't a problem, you can stack more stators and rotors on the same shaft. Zero motorcycles started out with Moten...

Re: Battery charging basics

For a few years, one manufacturer called 14S lithium-Ion battery packs 50V. After the Bafang mid drives began growing in popularity, they were often used with 14S, and many began labeling the packs 52V. EGO-brand lawn tools call 14S 56V, and I think Echo calls them 58V. So which is it, and what char...

I don't know why I havent seen this before. Brilliant work. It appears the Honda hybrid IMA controller is probably the perfect size for a street motorcycle E-conversion. I've been looking at conversions a lot recently, and the most common complaint is controllers. There's absolutely nothing availabl...

Re: Axial Flux Reluctance motor, pondering DIY layout

Thanks. Switched reluctance, four electromagnetic coils and four shared poles with no coils in them. Ten salinent poles on the rotor. This is a working model, and apparently well-regarded. Considered to be two-phase with two electromagnet pairs. https://www.electricbike.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/0...

A smaller chainring would help, it reduces stress on the battery. If the fastest you ever go when passing someone is 28 MPH, then theres no need to be able to run 35-MPH. Maybe try a 36T chainring, or something close?

It wouldn't be a big improvement, but it couldn't hurt.

Re: Wanted battery repair Maryland

You really need to get a $15 sparkfun digital multi meter/DMM and test each cell, and also where the break in current is. Perhaps the pack is fine and the BMS died. There are unscrupulous battery mechanics that will say its shot, charge you $40 for the diagnostic, quote you a huge fee if you want it...

Axial Flux Reluctance motor, pondering DIY layout

For anyone who is fairly new to ES, I am convinced that the Lebowski axial-flux motor is the ideal DIY electric motor for a non-hub electric bike. The most exotic thing is that it uses round disc neodymium magnets, which are reasonably available and not horribly expensive (for now, at least). Nothin...

Re: Will this work in an emergency power outage?

Here's my take on power backups. A decade ago, many people were arguing that buying solar panels, an inverter, and a big battery had a poor Return On Investment /ROI. it might save you $50/month, but the system costs $5000, so it would take 100 months to "break even". (8 years?) For me, it...

A section of metal can be formed that has two magnets of opposite orientation embedded at either end of it, and I suspect that is what's happening here. Three segments with three pole-pairs / six magnets.

Re: Will this work in an emergency power outage?

I do believe it's possible. I have purchased two inverters as a backup for my retirement, but I havent tried to hook them up yet. They are both a nominal 48V DC to 120V AC, and the specs say they can take an input up to 60V, so my 14S "52V" ebike packs are 58V when fully charged, and shoul...

Re: Amount of cells? many or few

If you hook up two cells that are identical (or two large paralleled groups), then the one at 4.2V will equalize with the one at 4.1V, and both will end up near 4.15V. As long as they are not getting too warm to touch, you are likely OK. I would just charge both groups to the same voltage using the ...

Nothing wrong with any of the MXUS products, many happy customers with that. But only if they have the motor size and kV you desire. Pretty hard to beat QS for selection.
