Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

Yeah, that’s my hope. Fingers crossed it’s fairly intelligent. I’m also looking for a way to use the existing throttle and clutch cables to modulate the throttle and rear brake (regen), both of which should work off a 0-5v variable input. I’ve seen a couple of solutions from Ballarat Ebikes, especi...

Re: 2WD trike pulling left when accelerating

Now it's time to put an encoder on your steering axis so you can bias power to the outside wheel. No need. Torque controllers deliver the torque specified by the throttle regardless of speed. With torque controllers and the trike side to side drive geometry, the inner and outer wheels provide equal...

Re: 2WD trike pulling left when accelerating

WOOOHOOO Finally got the controllers re-flashed for pure current mode. Long hard battle getting the install program to work. Totally a problem with my old XP laptop that doesn't go beyond 1024 x768 screen resolution. And the install program was written with wider screen resolution. So of the most i...

Re: Best controller?

Kelly Controllers haven't let me down yet. <snip> Also Kellys don't have overspeed or flux weakening, but otherwise pretty good for the money. That last bit has me pretty bummed out, I didn't know about that until after I bought both of my KLS7230S's. Overspeed/flux weakening would allow me to gear...

Re: Kelly kls7230s- speed restriction?

The Adaptto has field weakening, right? As far as I know the Kelly's do not (and if they do, it's baked into their normal motor control and never mentioned in any of their documentation). It's possible that you're just hitting the limit of Kv * Voltage on the Kelly, and it won't go any faster. I wis...

Re: First post, electric motorcycle build.

Interesting approach on the pouch cell tabs. I'm sure I missed it but are you going to be using a bus-plate screw termination or crimping the tabs together like the Chevy Volt packs? And might be worth putting this thread in the motorcycle section? [edit - seems it was here all along... Cut me some...

Re: First post, electric motorcycle build.

It wasn't actually random, but after getting absolutely nothing when connecting power/gnd to red and black, Without the resistor from power to the hall signal, you will get nothing. as well as getting no continuity across basically anything, it led me to believe that the wiring is no bueno. Well, y...

Re: First post, electric motorcycle build.

I freely admit that my testing methodology could have been bad, and I currently have no idea what the actual pinout is, but just by trying a bunch of random connections I should have at least gotten some voltage out of the thing, which makes me think that there is possibly a bad connection between ...

Re: First post, electric motorcycle build.

Bad news: The hall sensors don't work. When you say they don't work, how did you test them? You may know this, but: these are simply current-switching (sinking) devices, so they just switch a ground on or off at the signal pin. If you don't have a pullup resistor (a few kohm between signal and +Vha...

Re: First post, electric motorcycle build.

Updates: Good news: Comms with the android app over bluetooth work awesome. It's possible that either my USB-RS232 adapter sucks, or the 4-pin to DB9 adapters kelly provides suck. Either way, I can reliably read/write to the thing, so that's cool. Have the blown up controller back together, and will...

Re: Kelly KLS7230S Identification angel operation function

Hi Phate & HD96, do you guys have access to a multimeter? If you put power to the hall sensors and all your wiring is correct and the hall sensors are working, you should be able to see the hall sensor output voltage rising and falling as you turn the motor slowly by hand. This is a good way to tes...

No dice. Gonna take it apart to check the hall sensor board, but most likely I'll end up adding some new/better/working sensors.

Interesting, I’ll try some other wirings today. I might just switch to external hall sensors though.
Hopefully I can get my test bench set up again today to try a few more things myself. I just want to know this motor/controller combo is going to work so I can keep working on my bike.

Re: Kelly KLS7230S Identification angel operation function

I just tried the wiring you suggested and unfortunately it’s still doing the same thing. The halls might want more voltage then. I'll take a stab at it tomorrow. Edit: I haven't tested the wiring this way, but people have received Alien Power motors with really wacky hall wiring. Quote below is fro...

Oh hey, I'm having the exact same experience. You might even have the same motor that I do (FRC Hobby 120100 50kv sensored outrunner, which are the same as the Alien Power Systems and Epowerhobby outrunners). Clicks and "bumps" 7 or 8 times, then just sits there laughing at you until you reboot ever...

Re: First post, electric motorcycle build.

Didn't get to work on my accord because it was pouring, so I spent a couple hours trying to get my non-blown-up controller to talk to the motor. Bolted together a quick and dirty 7s pack of bus lipo's, and actually wired this controller properly this time. Was able to establish (flaky as hell) seria...

Re: First post, electric motorcycle build.

very nice. are you not going to put anything to insulate the pouches from each other? just to prevent 1 pouch from going "off script" and taking out the entire pack... some 0.5mil alu plate would do the trick. I was thinking about using some aluminum tape between the cells, but honestly between the...

Re: First post, electric motorcycle build.

Did some re-working on the battery pack, and more or less sorted out the case that's going around it. The model looks a bit messy because I didn't feel like re-modeling the cells with the tabs and crimps folded over. Because of this, I can probably pull another inch or so off the width of the case, ...

Re: Better passenger solution A.K.A. save my marriage

I'd look into a bigger scooter that you can ride more comfortably 2-up.

I've zipped around 2-up on 49cc rental scooters, and it was fine. That's definitely a lot less silly looking than dragging somebody around in a trailer.

Also you're probably going to want something with more power anyway.

No worries. Multiquoting tends to get broken on most forums (it worked great back in the day, but too many people just quoted whole posts so you'd end up loading an entire thread multiple times per page).

Re: I Need some technical advice for a commuter motorcycle project

I commuted on a small 250cc motorcycle for several years. for example, if you gear it to go 65mph, then ride it around for a week to find that you almost never exceed 45mph, it would make sense to gear it a bit lower for improved performance around town I strongly agree with this. Proper gearing wi...

The APT controllers look like a decent option, and it looks like they have CANBUS capability to talk to all sorts of things.
