The Charly Miller Challenge
The Paris-Brest-Paris 1200k randonee is perhaps the oldest cycling event still running. It began in the 19th century as a no-holds-barred race, with star riders being paced by relays of tandems, and sometimes by motorcycles. In 1901, Charly Miller , riding solo and unsupported, finished fifth in 56 ...

Re: Three wheel steering
What do you mean by smallest, lightest and hand controls? Are you talking about hand pedals or a twist and go scooter style of drive? The latter. As to size, no more than 8' long by four wide, and capable of carrying anything a longtail cargobike can. I'm thinking that for really bulky loads and aw...

Three wheel steering
Thinking about the simplest, lightest vehicle that would be usable on any road, with a low frontal area and a bit of streamling for maximum range. Hand controls only. I was at first thinking of something like a racing sidecar combination, but that has a problem of asymmetry: even with a helpful pass...

Re: BBS01 Intermittent error 7 (halls sensor)
This site says it's over voltage, error 7, http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/bafang-bbs01-error-7.20255/ Yes, I misread the manual. There doesn't seem to be an easy cure, though. :? I should have said, the motor doesn't run at all when the error shows. It is intermittent and unpredictable. Or...

Impressive, but to put it in perspective - Kurt Searvogel: https://scontent-yyz1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/12548962_10153799101472591_4486336360514441046_n.jpg?oh=51b4990db9a1a3aca8b47600298ac865&oe=57013E86 Over 200 miles a day average for a whole year. No solar. No batteries.

I have one of these that I now want to move to a different bike. It was a very tight fit originally, and is now pretty well stuck. Any ideas for getting it out without damaging either it or the aluminium frame?

I have a shrink wrapped 18650 battery (36v 20ah) that I've be carrying in a saddlebag. Lately I'very experimented with a modified bottle cage mounting, which works well, but it could do with more protection for winter riding. Here's the idea: a couple of rigid side plates (ply?) bigger all round tha...

You can see why no one runs them on the road. They need far too much room! Hehe... Hi JennyB. Thought is to fly a not-too-tall spanker sail off "aft" (rear/back) to have adjustable by... "pilot"/rider/driver for when wind direction and speed is right. An "assist" to th...

I know Murvagh well; it's about twenty miles away. In, fact my brother might possibly be in there somewhere as he hires Blokarts (the mini landyachts). You can see why no one runs them on the road. They need far too much room!

Voice of experience: there's no shame in deciding to give up - but do first take as long as you need to get fed and rested, and only then consider whether you can make it to the next stop. Otherwise you'll end up with a case of "coulda-shoulda."

Re: Sinclair C5 teardown on EEVBLOG ;)
I tried pedalling one once, a long time ago. No gears, short, flexy crank and a LOT of hard work. The motor could apparently get you up to 15 mph if there isn't a hill in the way. But before you laugh too hard, some folk modify them for drag racing and get up to 150 mph and 0-60 in five secon...

Hi all, just wanted to post a thank you to all who offered up advice on getting my stuck axle issue resolved. I ended up filing the inside of the BB shell until the unit could slide through. Re: Long Distance Ebike Design
I don't think of a 100 mile ebike as anything unattainable or mystical: JennyB has documented 100 mile rides on her road bike in which she's using the electric propulsion as only a hill assist. That's a valid "use mode" and something I think is feasible if the bike is light enough (and yo...

1200 km, 14 km of climbing in 90 hours? I WAS MAD!
Well, the Roche-Elliott-Kelly 400k ride at the end of May did not go well. I'd reckoned I might be able to complete it in a bit over 24 hours, and, if so, it might be possible to contemplate the 1200k ride without assistance. I knew I was slow on the hills, but I managed the climb up Glenmalure to t...

Re: Calculating Mid-Drive drive train ratio + nuvinci. How?
Gear inches may be an old-fashioned way to describe gearing, but it works neatly with ebikes. The important number is 336: if a hub motor has enough power to run at 336 rpm the bike will go one mph faster for each inch increase in driven wheel diameter. A 20" wheel will get you 20 mph, and a 26...

The battery is from Schwibsi of this forum, 20ah of Sanyo V3 - half the size and weight and twice the capacity of the first lithium battery I had. I'm charging with a couple of 6 amp Cellman chargers in parallel. Together they fit neatly in the bottom of my Carradice saddlebag. In total, this setup ...

Only just over three weeks to go now, and it looks like I won't be riding the Mile Failte assisted unless I can find a suitable motor PDQ. :( Thing is, I want to ride the new bike because that's what I'm putting in the distance on, and I'd rather have a front hub: 1. So I don't do an accidental back...

Absolutely, I kept getting told by everybody to apply for it, but I had near zero chance of getting a disability pension. On a good day I'm normal, so very hard to prove disability. Three "normal" days in a row, and I'm back in bed for a week sick as hell. And anyway, I'd rather adapt, im...

Re: 1200 km, 14 km of climbing in 90 hours - AM I MAD?
1.2kg of batteries (Panasonic NCR18650pf, 2900mah/cell) is giving me exactly 18km of no-pedal range on flat terrain IRL. That's less than 18wh/km. This is on Q100H and 4,2V/cell. Every additional 1 kg of batteries gives 15 Km of extra distance. Or: every 100km distance = 6.7kg of batteries. That se...

Time for an update. I am definitely mad! I've lost a lot of weight - back under 90 kg for the first time in at least 5 years - got a lot fitter and a bit faster. Bought a decent bike at the end of March and have put well over 1000km on it, including a 200k and a 300k Audax. I'm still very slow...

When you get a remover tool that fits, clamp that It the vice and proceed as above.TylerDurden wrote:Hiya Doc,
I'd clamp the freewheel in a vise with the axle pointing up (freewheel pointing down). I'd ensure the vise swivel is tight, crank the vise jaws very tight, then turn the wheel to break it free.
