Re: Fast Ebike for a tough commute

Anyone saying that you need 1000W to go 40mph must be sitting straight up and riding like they're on ape-hangers. Grin's motor simulator says that the load to go 40 mph on a full recumbent is 978 watts. A road bike set up for commuting is very unlikely to be that slippery. The simulator gives a loa...

Re: Lowrider eBike project

Do the fins get pretty hot on this? Was thinking i could buy it and take it apart and use 3 lights in the front holder I've already got and one in the rear holder I've got. Trying to keep a lowrider look to it but don't think the heat fins would fit. No, they don't get hot, but the LED's on the cir...

Re: Do you run across overly competitive/aggressive cyclists?

Illinois north of Chicago here. I pretty much only use the road for biking when I choose to ride to work, and then I wave (lift two fingers off my handlebar) to every other bike I see. Some even wave back! I do see some dangerous moves pulled by the lycra "pro bikers" at intersections, always due to...

Re: Lowrider eBike project

I use lights that accept a range of voltage to make things simple. Both of my controllers came with an output that turns on whenever the controller is powered on.

Re: Critique my plans for my first build!

Oh, and it's generally considered bad practice to use BMS settings to limit charge voltage, though it can be done. The proper way is to vary the voltage that the charger puts out. Some cheap ones (like mine) have a potentiometer that can be slightly adjusted, and better chargers have a programmable ...

Re: Critique my plans for my first build!

Well thought out! The motor kit you linked is very similar to the two kits I've bought. They do all have the 6-bolt adapter for disc brake rotors, and generally work just fine. I also have the Malectrics spot welder, and it has worked great through the four batteries I've built so far. I was advised...

Re: MTB for EBIKE Conversion

I apologize that I can't help your search, but was curious if you were using regen braking. I use a 1500w direct drive motor (no regen yet) in an aluminum frame with one torque arm, and it hasn't affected the dropouts a bit. I do think it's lame that most torque arms still allow some slight rotation...

Re: Looking to build a bike

I agree with the 72v battery if you want 40+mph. Your link was for the 5 turn Leaf motor (Grin's default), and here is a link with the 4 turn (Leaf's default config) rpm/v numbers pasted in: https://www.ebikes.ca/tools/simulator.html?motor=Leaf%205T&batt=cust_52_0.2_20&cont=cust_60_120_0.03_V&hp=0&a...

Re: Bonanza "Bulldozer" Dual PhaseRunner AWD

Ah, yes. Neptronix was saying the same thing for his BikeE and Cannondale. The Lynx however acts more like a tiller when it's tilted back, so the narrow bar is just fine, and more comfortable than I thought it would be. (I was originally hoping for under seat steering). It does only require the smal...

Re: Portable 5-8 amp charger

I do bring my Vruzend 52v charger with me to work in my cargo pocket when I ride. It's very light, but only provides 3 amps.

Would you rather have more of an onboard charger like this? Unfortunately this specific one doesn't offer 52v.

Re: Bonanza "Bulldozer" Dual PhaseRunner AWD

That Lynx is really cute, full suspension packed into a tiny package. But those handlebars are so short. Thanks, it was pretty affordable used, and I added the front suspension fork for $20 from ebay  Do you mean the handlebars are narrow, like not enough room to add accessories? I do like the...

Get a voltmeter so you can watch battery voltage in realtime as you bike, if you can. This will help to understand what's going on.

Re: Bonanza "Bulldozer" Dual PhaseRunner AWD

I wonder if you could do a twist throttle on the left... No word on when Grin will release a mind control interface for the Phaserunner to clean up handlebar clutter :P My two upright bikes have grip shifters, which I've always cursed for making it a long reach to the thumb throttle, and they wouldn...

It's possible, but it would be quite the mess of wires! What's your location? I think there are some people who will make custom shaped battery packs.

Looks like the positive end insulators took a beeting between the last two cell groups. I'd bet the cells are fine, but the insulation should be replaced and beefed up on the positive ends.

Hollywood Sport Rider SE for E-bikes. Re: In over my head with an unbalanced 14S5P battery

I would first charge that sub pack to 4.2v (or same as the other cells), then check capacity on the whole pack, carefully watching each sub pack voltage and discontinuing discharging when the first sub pack reaches 20% DOD, then discharge each remaining sub pack to compare balance of all cells. I a...

I've had no problems with my aluminum Walmart bike. 1500w no regen, and I'm 270lbs. It just goes to show that I need to redo my recumbent testing. It was too windy yesterday, and it's very hard to guess an average watching the watt meter bounce around while trying to hold the throttle and speed steady.
