Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

No idea on top speed - the motor says it's good for 110kph which sounds reasonable. I was able to get this thing to climb smoothly 50 before my "this is a prototype" sense kicked in. It still pulled really well at that level. I've also got it limited to 28% of battery current to keep the d...

Here's a few of the photos. This is the controller going in. Nicely tucked into the engine compartment, attached to a leftover piece of plexi that I'll use to make a more substantial replacement. IMG_3935.jpg Here she is outside with the same cover off. IMG_3944.jpg This is the rest of the electrics...

Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

She works! After a major repositioning of components, mainly moving the controller to where the old engine was, my wife and I took the little thing for a test drive. She works great! The biggest issue now is with the throttle. In the crash the grip throttle gained some friction, and it’s too much fo...

Re: E-Ducati Build

Looking fantastic. Maybe a cheap Chinese BMS but instead of driving the real load, only let it drive the DC/DC and through that a high current contactor for the motor driver. That way you lose current sense from the BMS. But at least you allow the BMS to cut off the load if it needs to. Should work...

Re: 48v mild hybrid systems?

My hope would be that by integrating the BMS and designing for outdoor automotive use, the packs would be solid on most fronts, including the setpoints, and kind of "fire and forget". I mean, anything with this much engineering behind it is going to be leaps ahead in durability compared to...

48v mild hybrid systems?

Hey all - I'm considering an electric motorcycle conversion, and after building the last battery for my electric Vespa I'm looking to buy something off the shelf. I've been reading into a few of the new 48v mild hybrid systems, and they appear compact, rugged, BMS built in, passively cooled and able...

Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

Guys it works!!!! I’m only running a 20s1P battery (the one I made to bench test) but I stuffed everything into the chassis and rode her up a hill!!! More torque than I was expecting from the little battery pack, and I’m being very careful not to push it too far (it did heat up a little). But man it...

Re: Gilera Runner - Newbie tips

I’m considering a Vespa project with one of those 13” single shaft removable-rim motors. How do they bolt up to the swing arm? My last project had an axle going all the way through and clamped on both sides. I’d be afraid of movement, especially with regen. Anyway this sounds like a fun project and ...

Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

Funny, though... Just as I get this project off the ground I discovered the world of single shaft motors. The swingarm has been a great project and I'm super stoked to keep working on it. However, I think if I was going to put a kit together I'd probably leave off the disc brake (upgrade the front t...

IMG_2552.jpg IMG_2554.jpg IMG_2555.jpg IMG_2556.jpg IMG_2557.jpg One thing I love about this swingarm design is that you can just barely see the little Brembo caliper sticking up on the left side. The axle nuts make it very easy to get the disc positioned correctly before clamping down. Not sure ho...

Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

Eddy: I finally tid a fit test today. It went in *almost smoothly. The motor mount bushings out of the original engine were a little too big and I had to grind them down by about 1mm in dia. Also the shock mount is a little farther forward than stock so it’s riding about an inch taller. I’ll post so...

Re: torque arm picture thread

Just got my swingarm back from the fabrication shop. 25mm thick 7075 Aluminum with two M8 bolts to clamp. Motor is 7kw, and I'll be using regen, so I really wanted this to be rock solid. I haven't bolted it up to the frame yet, so who knows how it will hold up over time, but it slipped in without is...

Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

My swingarm came in! I had to do a little bit of filing on the axle to make it fit, and I need to add a few spacers to get the brake caliper and rotor aligned, but at first glance everything works! I love how hidden the little brembo caliper is. IMG_1494.jpg IMG_1500.jpg IMG_1501.jpg IMG_1504.jpg IM...

Re: Powering a 6KW system: 60V or 72V?

That looks excellent, and really more like what I should be doing. Yeah, I should just bite the bullet and invest in a spot welder, and commit to doing this the right way. At least the Vruzend kit will let me get my controller set up, and perhaps the 25R / 30Q difference won't be all that noticeable...

Re: Powering a 6KW system: 60V or 72V?

That’s really good to know - thank you. I’ve been considering the series connections as well, and am considering just getting a spot welder and using nickel plates instead of strips. That seems far more stable. If I went that route I’d also be able to pack a lot more cells in there - the Vruzend kit...

Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

Made another update to my swingarm design, and looks like I'm very close to having this thing made. I've sent it out to the shop (3DHubs) to make sure everything looks good. I designed the swingarm to work with the Kelly 10" 6kW disc-brake motor, and included a few holes to bolt on a Brembo P30...

Re: Powering a 6KW system: 60V or 72V?

Hey thanks. That’s good advice as this motor is already set up to go way faster than I am interested in going. Here’s the published power curve: http://kellycontroller.com/mot/downloads/72V_6KW_10inch_curve.xls I’m not sure exactly how to get all these numbers to line up, but if I’m reading it right...

Re: Powering a 6KW system: 60V or 72V?

No, that's good to hear, and thanks for the advice. I also think the pack is small. My initial goal was to match the stealth fighter ( https://www.stealthelectricbikes.com/stealth-f-37-fighter/ ) in specs, as a local SF reviewer got around 50 miles in range, and the little vespa will weigh about the...

Re: New 14S7P pack need advices

Hey thanks for the detailed reply! I'm using a Kelly 72v motor ( http://kellycontroller.com/hub-motor-72v-6kwdisc-brake10-inch-p-41.html ), and a bunch of Samsung 25R cells. Riding plan is limited - this is a conversion for my wife who wanted to jet around on a Vespa from time to time. I'd love to g...

Powering a 6KW system: 60V or 72V?

Hey guys, I'm in the process of converting an old Vespa over to electric, and I'm building a battery pack. My motor is a Kelly hub rated for 6KW at 72V, and the literature says it'll push over 8KW pulling 125A at 66V. The controller will handle 8KW at 24-84V, and up to 300A I think. My battery pack,...

Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

So for the past week or two I've been working on the swingarm, brakes, and the battery. My swingarm designs are going all over the place with the consideration of the rear caliper. Here's one of my latest sketches: Screen Shot 2018-10-18 at 6.43.54 PM.png However, the biggest thing that I'm grapplin...

Re: New 14S7P pack need advices

Hey nice post - I'm afraid I'm not able to help - just attaching to say that I'm interested in this as well. Just ordered the Vruzend 2.0 kit and a bunch of Samsung 18650s to try and turn a Vespa small frame fuel tank into a 72v 20s4p pack. I'd love to know about your experience with your new 60A bl...

Re: Classis Vespa Smallframe to EV

Also, I'm starting to look at sourcing batteries. I'll need a 72v pack, with 15-25AH capacity to make it useful around town, and something that can burst up to around 100A for a little oomph on takeoff. Trying to find something that will fit inside the smallframe is a pain. I've seen a bunch of enti...
