This just came up if you are in Australia, dirt cheap, and would have jumped on it myself when I was building mine had I known... https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/alfredton/miscellaneous-goods/lithium-batteries-and-charger/1212695536?utm_source=com.samsung.android.messaging&utm_medium=social&utm_camp...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Cheers :) I've picked up a 2000W pure sine 48V inverter (4000W peak), it appears to run my compressor, power tools, heat gun and other items easily, problem is it is so big I can't mount it anywhere on the kart! But it could run the 650W server rack, or a fridge for many hours if there is a power ou...

Re: John Deere E-Gator rebuild(Picturestory)

Nah you went to a lot more trouble than I did, with respraying, fabrication etc. I'm fortunate mine came with a plastic roof and windscreen, and plastic tray, so I just needed to spray paint where the old batteries were.

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Some pictures :) https://imgur.com/a/pH8l9tN Just need to do a few tweaks to the voltage limits for charging etc, currently it is set a bit conservative. I'd also like to upgrade the white battery monitoring wires to thicker ones so that the current shunting works better, I think they are a bit thin...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Wired it all up yesterday with BMS etc and took it for a spin, runs like an absolute animal now, goes up hills like they aren't there, seems to peak at around 185A draw with just me in it on a moderate 30 degree hill. Drove it to a mate's place and we took it up a 45 degree hill together and hit 300...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Power supply has arrived and I have been performing a balance charge for the last few days. Have the power supply set at 3.45V and it has been hovering at around 8-10A output without dropping (bank is wired as parallel, ie 1600Ah). Pack is sitting around 3.35V. Around 1.7kwh has been sent to the pac...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Battery box built :) https://imgur.com/a/IlTpuF9 Have configured as 4S4P temporarily and attached to a gel charger for a few days while I wait for the variable power supply to arrive. It's just hit the country so hopefully I'll see it soon. Will then reconfigure to 16P and finalize the balance charge.

Batteries have arrived, I've made up a temp bus bar out of some aluminium flat bar for the initial balance charge. 3.2V 1600Ah, wouldn't want to drop a screwdriver on it! https://imgur.com/a/6o6j5A8 Just waiting on BMS and charger. Charger might be a few weeks :( Looking at mounting the box to the k...

Yeah I have a stack of Formply sitting around, and bought some threaded rod on the weekend, so will assemble and balance charge as per below:

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

I have owned one of these units for about 10 years. Service wise I spend a fortune and the batteries are a pain so if you find a Lithium solution that works I will follow you! I have another major issue and that is the 8 flash warning when I have been using it for about 60 to 90 mins continually. T...

I wonder if 160 of these would be suitable? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lifepo4-Cells10AH-38120-Headway-Brand-Carton-of-24-cells-Aust-Stock/183413589284?hash=item2ab44d4524:g:iGgAAOSw5U9Zij7M:rk:2:pf:0#viTabs_0&autorefresh=true 3.2v 10Ah cells, $330 for a pack of 24, would need 160 of them, plus a c...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Just found the old e-mail with the quote from EV Power, the 12V 100AH batteries are $850+GST each (need 4) EVG12V100AH $850 + GST 100 Ah 12.60 kg 273 x 128 x 245h Complete with BMS modules You would also require the BCU-PEV-16V battery control unit ($450 + GST) and one of their 48V chargers. So $423...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Yeah I hear ya, I've replaced 3 of the 8 batteries in the pack, and a 4th is about to die on me. Not sure if all the bumping around on the farm is splashing acid out, or something else. We have a few hills which flattens them quickly. I'd be interested to know how yours lasts, I'll get one evening h...

Re: Battery Packs - Where to buy them

I'm based in the Newcastle NSW area. Happy to have a crack at importing some, or going in on a group buy, but I'll need to make sure all the protective measures are in place too. BMS, "fuel gauge", suitable charger etc. Lots of research ahead of me and thread skimming :)

It's for this one: https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=96717&p=1417763#p1417763 Toro Workman MDE. It currently has a pack of 8 6V T105 lead acid batteries, two are faulty. I've popped in some "new" replacements over the weekend but these had been sitting for a year on a concrete f...

Re: Battery Packs - Where to buy them

I was leaning towards LFP batteries preferably for safety, capacity is not a massive issue as long as it is at least 100Ah. It would need to be a suitable voltage replacement for the current 48V (8x 6V) lead acid pack. https://www.lfp.net.au/product-page/3-2v-100ah-lifepo4-cell-calb-ca100 According ...

Re: Battery Packs - Where to buy them

If the 100Ah cells will hold that kind of current draw then I might be interested, I'd need around 15-16 of them to make 51V. What would a suitable BMS be worth? With the ability to shut off supply to the battery pack if voltage any any individual cell fell or rose above a safe level? Worst case whe...

Re: Battery Packs - Where to buy them

$2-3k incl BMS I'd say, otherwise it doesn't make it cost effective to switch from FLA batts. At that price I'm probably dreaming though. As long as it can handle a peak current of 355A @ 48V then it should be adequate. I was toying with getting a set of CALB CA180 cells from here and then obtaining...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Yeah I'm not holding out hope, have bought a HA02 balancer for them that should arrive in a week, and am using a hopefully-decent charger (Delta-Q). Given it will spend most of its life on float and driven to no less than 70-80% SoC I'm hoping it will perform. Otherwise I'm researching the lithium o...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Yeah I have two bad batteries in my bank of 8, so they sag after a short drive. Picking up some secondhand unused ones tomorrow night and will see if the performance improves, and re-evaluate a lithium purchase from there :) Even a 100Ah or 150Ah bank would be OK as we usually charge once a day and ...

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Maybe I should skip the lithium and look into an ultracapacitor? Should cover the surge current and regen braking nicely, and trickle it back to the batteries?
The Toro certainly goes fast enough for our needs, uphill not so much though.

Looks like a Sevcon? Toro Part# 110-2569
https://www.toro.com/parts/partdetails/?id=40577

And the motor is from Advanced Motors & Drives (Kinetek), part# 104-7335 or DV3-4005

Re: Toro Workman MDE conversion

Looks like the main fuse is 335A, and I *think* this is the motor in it:
http://www.evmotors.com.au/products/dow ... 1-4003.pdf
http://www.evmotors.com.au/products/k91.html
According to the spec sheet it is rated to 72V 300A.

So 335A peak draw is a bit easier to find batteries for than 500A :)
