Re: Controller getting to hot

Agree with above, its summer now. Get it out in the air.

But no controller should get too hot to touch. Hot yes, but not leave a mark on your hand hot.

I know motors get really hot when running with the wrong phase combo. Controllers too?

Re: Hall wire/cable swap question

No particular reason to upgrade the halls. They just carry a low amps signal. The phases you can cut a few inches out from the hub, and the thicker wires will start heat sinking some of the warmth from the remaining few inches of phase wire. And that short, less resistance in the original phases. An...

Glad it annoyed you, you paid attention. I'm not sure I said I was smart. But I explained how I handle this particular situation that has happened to me plenty of times, on bikes, cars, mopeds, trucks. People drive like shit for sure and you better be ready, and experience will teach. Several of my ...

Re: E-bike Achilles heel?

Ugly bike is a good strategy. But my primary strategy is to shop early. If you think about it, the tweaker gets up at noon, spends all day stealing, planning to steal, fencing what he stole last night at 2 am, and all night finding the drugs. Just do your shopping before 9 am, and you just avoided 9...

OMG! So good you survived it, with nothing bigger than the concussion. Helmet saved you from worse, death, or organ donor. That f---er never even knew he hit you I bet. I'm not blaming you, not at all.. But you could have been more ready for it. Even in cars I check my rear, then I at least get off ...

Re: eZip Trailz Commuter Low Step

30 degree incline is black diamond ski slope, but 30% is plausible. It takes an e bike with motorcycle power to get up even a few blocks of that steep a hill, or a 50 mph run on it. No way around it? Most 48v e bikes can do a brief bit of 15%, with the rider pedaling as hard as possible in the low g...

Re: Can anyone ID this peculiar bike/motor?

Motor itself looks funny, not one instantly recognizable to me. Looks like a drum brake on the left side of it. Its kind of cool, with that moped or small motorcycle front end, and the moped wheel in back. Looks like he got the headset angle a bit steep though. But yeah, its likely a 500w rated moto...

Re: Motor/rim Lacing using bike chain

If nothing else, I'd rather have the spokes break first, instead of the aluminum flange holes on the hub. Motorcycle/large scooter quality mag wheels would be a good thing though, instead of radial laced spokes. What I mean is just stronger cast wheels that mount a standard motorcycle tire, but the ...

Re: The ideal hubmotor

For sure, a better integrated torque arm would be a great starting point. Then after that attaches, the axle can be 10 mm round, or through hub round, whatever. The old brushed heinzmanns had this, and it was a fantastic, but simple bit of engineering. I simply can't believe that china won't copy th...

Re: trunk mounted bike carry racks

You need a hitch on the car, for a hitch mount rack. The swagman hitch rack is very affordable, yet damn surprising strong. Its pretty easy to install one yourself, once you order the correct one for your model and year of car. The hitch will come with a neat tool that makes it easy to put the bolt ...

Re: Gas "Generator" <pumping> Electric fast "Charger" via electric bike

For sure, when you are out snagging a charge someplace, its much much quicker to stop at about 85% full, vs sitting there forever waiting for the last 5%, at one or two amps. I'd watch a wattmeter, and when the watts of a 250w charger dropped to 50w, I'd stop and ride off. Only when charging overnig...

Re: Whats wrong? Wheel build n00b

Should be fine for a test ride, depending on your weight. While far from the best solution, I'd be real tempted to unlace each spoke one at at time, and put a slight bend in each spoke about a quarter inch above where the threads start. Not a huge bend, just about 10 degrees. You did start out with ...

Re: Why do I now ride my ebike with light motorcycle gear?

Whether a bike hat works depends a lot on what you hit your head on. The time I split one in half, at a mere 15 mph, I went over the bars and hit my head on the corner of the curb. Head was pretty comfortable on that one, Broke both collarbones though. I never even scuffed a bike helmet crashi...

Re: Why do I now ride my ebike with light motorcycle gear?

The same old helmet debate is just so fun. What really amuses me is the way people latch on to whether it will save your life or not. I guess that goes back to how they sell helmets, seat belts, air bags in cars, etc. My personal experience is a bit different. Hard to say if any of the crashes that ...

Re: My 1st ebike, Pls Help Verify Kit/Info Before I Buy

We just know these common motors at sight. The smaller diameter geared motors rate 350w, while the larger diameter geared motors rate 500w. Both can take roughly double the rated motor wattage, for a limited time, like an hour, which may be a half hour longer than the battery lasts. And in any case,...

Re: Why do I now ride my ebike with light motorcycle gear?

Well, I made it through a lifetime in construction, seldom wore a hard hat. Never ever fell off a ladder or scaffold. Nor did I work under people. This was all mostly residential stuff, no tall buildings. Went to hospital one time, for stepping on a nail, to get the T shot. Saw plenty less careful p...

Just drill out the one you got. If you have the drill, and the big bit. Otherwise the new tool with a bigger hole may be cheaper than buying tools.

That link to the 500w kit,, that is a 350w motor. Exactly the type of kit I suggest, if your budget is really that tight. Basically, at 500w your battery will last a lot longer than the same smaller, more affordable battery run on 1000w. Thats the only reason I suggest you run the first year or so o...

Re: My 1st ebike, Pls Help Verify Kit/Info Before I Buy

You will want a stronger motor later, but if you buy that kind now, you will just need a lot more money to get the battery that will last with the motor pulling so hard. Best thing you could do? Get a top quality kit from a vendor that sells only that kind of kit. But that puts the budget as much as...

Sounds like a nice thing. its not a bike though, its a motorcycle with pedals, usually illegal to ride on the street. Not that any of us on ES give a shit about that. 8) The main issue is that used batteries are worth $0. My advice is figure out what a new battery will cost, then subtract that from ...

I was 20 thou in charge card debt when I started with e bikes. It was 2008, and I was afraid they would jack up my interest rates if I kept rolling over that debt.
