Re: Motor/rim Lacing using bike chain

If nothing else, I'd rather have the spokes break first, instead of the aluminum flange holes on the hub. Motorcycle/large scooter quality mag wheels would be a good thing though, instead of radial laced spokes. What I mean is just stronger cast wheels that mount a standard motorcycle tire, but the ...

Re: The ideal hubmotor

For sure, a better integrated torque arm would be a great starting point. Then after that attaches, the axle can be 10 mm round, or through hub round, whatever. The old brushed heinzmanns had this, and it was a fantastic, but simple bit of engineering. I simply can't believe that china won't copy th...

Re: trunk mounted bike carry racks

You need a hitch on the car, for a hitch mount rack. The swagman hitch rack is very affordable, yet damn surprising strong. Its pretty easy to install one yourself, once you order the correct one for your model and year of car. The hitch will come with a neat tool that makes it easy to put the bolt ...

Re: Gas "Generator" <pumping> Electric fast "Charger" via electric bike

For sure, when you are out snagging a charge someplace, its much much quicker to stop at about 85% full, vs sitting there forever waiting for the last 5%, at one or two amps. I'd watch a wattmeter, and when the watts of a 250w charger dropped to 50w, I'd stop and ride off. Only when charging overnig...

Re: Whats wrong? Wheel build n00b

Should be fine for a test ride, depending on your weight. While far from the best solution, I'd be real tempted to unlace each spoke one at at time, and put a slight bend in each spoke about a quarter inch above where the threads start. Not a huge bend, just about 10 degrees. You did start out with ...

Re: Why do I now ride my ebike with light motorcycle gear?

Whether a bike hat works depends a lot on what you hit your head on. The time I split one in half, at a mere 15 mph, I went over the bars and hit my head on the corner of the curb. Head was pretty comfortable on that one, Broke both collarbones though. I never even scuffed a bike helmet crashi...

Re: Why do I now ride my ebike with light motorcycle gear?

The same old helmet debate is just so fun. What really amuses me is the way people latch on to whether it will save your life or not. I guess that goes back to how they sell helmets, seat belts, air bags in cars, etc. My personal experience is a bit different. Hard to say if any of the crashes that ...

Re: My 1st ebike, Pls Help Verify Kit/Info Before I Buy

We just know these common motors at sight. The smaller diameter geared motors rate 350w, while the larger diameter geared motors rate 500w. Both can take roughly double the rated motor wattage, for a limited time, like an hour, which may be a half hour longer than the battery lasts. And in any case,...

Re: Why do I now ride my ebike with light motorcycle gear?

Well, I made it through a lifetime in construction, seldom wore a hard hat. Never ever fell off a ladder or scaffold. Nor did I work under people. This was all mostly residential stuff, no tall buildings. Went to hospital one time, for stepping on a nail, to get the T shot. Saw plenty less careful p...

Just drill out the one you got. If you have the drill, and the big bit. Otherwise the new tool with a bigger hole may be cheaper than buying tools.

That link to the 500w kit,, that is a 350w motor. Exactly the type of kit I suggest, if your budget is really that tight. Basically, at 500w your battery will last a lot longer than the same smaller, more affordable battery run on 1000w. Thats the only reason I suggest you run the first year or so o...

Hard to beat dealing with Grin. I wish I was local, just so I could hang out some with Justin. The best e bike stuff I've ever owned was stuff that Justin designed and produced, not just sold. Cycleanalysts, and the Satiator charger. You are going to be very happy with your bike. You can save a ton ...

Re: My 1st ebike, Pls Help Verify Kit/Info Before I Buy

You will want a stronger motor later, but if you buy that kind now, you will just need a lot more money to get the battery that will last with the motor pulling so hard. Best thing you could do? Get a top quality kit from a vendor that sells only that kind of kit. But that puts the budget as much as...

Re: Used Ebike from Craigslist - worth it?

Sounds like a nice thing. its not a bike though, its a motorcycle with pedals, usually illegal to ride on the street. Not that any of us on ES give a shit about that. 8) The main issue is that used batteries are worth $0. My advice is figure out what a new battery will cost, then subtract that from ...

Re: My 1st ebike, Pls Help Verify Kit/Info Before I Buy

I was 20 thou in charge card debt when I started with e bikes. It was 2008, and I was afraid they would jack up my interest rates if I kept rolling over that debt. My car was nearly dead, eating my paycheck every other month, and my work 15 miles away. By parking the car most days I could get 6 mont...

I had not looked at grins website in quite a while. I can't say a thing about how the site works, or how they work regen. You want 52v for sure. Don't let me talk you out of an e bike. I saved 20 thou by riding one about 100 miles a week, in 3 years. Perhaps I should be more clear about fires. Its really rare to have a battery catch fire. REALLY rare. Just pretty devastating if your house is not insured when one happens. Mine was well insure...

Spend all you can on a quality battery. If you go cheap, charge it outside. My bargain 400 buck battery burned my garage down. You may have to go with cheap as it gets to start out. I did that too, and as I saved money by keeping the car parked, I could afford better stuff later. I could afford a go...

Yes, definitely do that if you have long enough axles for it. The plate may or may not need a spacer washer under it, depending on how flat the whole rear dropout plate is. And while you are at it, that plate can also be a strong torque arm

Re: Gas "Generator" <pumping> Electric fast "Charger" via electric bike

That's the very loud generator I used to try it. 500w continuous on that one is a fantasy spec. I had to run 250w (5 amps 48v) chargers one at a time on it. It was a bit much for me to carry on my bob trailer, at 30 pounds it made the bike handle funny. But a more stable trailer like the one I made ...

Spring will only be on one side, if there is any rebound adjustment. The other side will have the oil. Really cheap shock may have spring in both sides, or possibly nothing at all in the other side. Just only going to get so much from a pogo stick fork. Even more pre load just makes the stroke itsel...

As you see, that works. But the downside is you are towing a trailer with 50 pounds or so of generator on it. So the trailer needs to be real good. One thing not shown is what that rig acts like if the bike lane of a road has a lot of slope on it. Perfect for 20 mph, not so for 40 mph. He did do one...

I wanted performance like that, but for longer rides than 45 min. Hard to carry battery big enough to go for a couple hours at those speeds. For $800 I bought an old honda 100. Because you could choose a lower gear, it would climb steep hills that choked my large hub motor, on 3000w of 72v. Top spee...

Well, this is where I diverge from the pack here at ES. You want to keep up with traffic, be warm where its cold, etc. One of these will do the trick nicely. Its fast, quiet for a motorcycle, and the fairing is outstanding in cold weather. Some engine heat is directed to your hands, which I find del...
