" both of our wives have prohibited us from working on the project anymore after wasting so much time and money with little hope of recovering it." 350 + pages on this BMS topic, then ANOTHER 350+ pages on the same topic, then ANOTHER 40+ pages of "Finally" pages, enough already...

Re: charging prius battery modules

Normally the 48V is a 40cell battery and 7s prius module means 42 cells series so i hope this just leads to a tiny bit of less charging instead of blowing up...anyone has an idea about this?? Monstarr, I wouldn't trust any NiMh charger to catch the - delta v for this battery. This is not like other...

Re: NiCad Recondtioning Secret for sale: Gimmick?

  Wow, this thread is over 3 1/2 years old, but the info is still relevant! All I can tell you is that I took the cells down to .4v using a tiny light bulb, then brought the charge up to 1.2, using another healthy cell. Once reconditioned, I then "exercised" them by charg...

Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

Just a total newbie here, having just discovered your site ... I've spent several hours reading everything I could on using the Prius Batteries ... I had thought I would have to use several hunded pounds of the heavy lead acid batteries for a small 48V - EV project, a BMW Isetta (Urkel Car) weighin...

Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

Steve, I would just take 2 modules in series (12s) and put the 16V charger to them and see if they get up to 8V/module. If the voltage gets too high, they will swell way before any off-gassing. If you limit the voltage to 8.2V/module, they won't give you any problems heating up, swelling or gassing....

Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

I just purchased 11 modules also. I had 5 arrive @ 2.5v and 2 @ 3.5. I am charging them with a 5v 4a PS atm. Then I plan on doing series pairs with the 16v 4.5a IBM chargers. What should I look for to see if they survived. Also what (hopefully fairly inexpencive) testing equipment should I get to t...

Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

So far, I have two cells out of eight that won't hold anything over 6.6 volts. Again, you are referring to modules as "cells". Cells are the smaller units within the modules. There are 6 cells in one module. Through all my searches, I have not been able to find a source for the connectors...

Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

Tom_D, thanks for the reply! So NiMH doesn't suffer from the same sulfation problems as lead/acid when they are charged at a lower amperage-that makes it a lot easier to work with. I was wondering if there was any chance that a lead/acid 12v charger might work on 2 cells in series since the charger...

Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

I have purchased 22 of the bad cells from the same eBay auction. I am still not really sure how to charge them. Since I have read on here that standard NiMH chargers "miss the Delta v" (I have no clue what that means) that a CV charger is to be used. I checked all my power supplies and fo...

okay Tom, thanks for that, thanks for the feedback. Just one more question.....is that full throttle, or half-throttle, etc?? Thanks!! Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

Tom, no doubt if you have the extra capacity and it's working for you, no reason to change. I've left 8.3v on overnight once by accident and there was no issue, the cells were drawing milliamps, but no heat/defomation/gassing. A while back I set my charge to 8.35v and charge them in series strings ...

Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

Tom, why just 8.2 volts on the charge? I was breaking in a new pack at 8.34v/module and had a bad experience.   I figure that 8.2V is more like what Toyota does, not charging to the limit. I am purely guessing, but since I have ample AH, I just want to err on the side of safety...

Consider the Toyota Prius battery module, which is also NiMH chemstry! Prismatic cell, not cylindrical. They have different charging & discharging characteristics. They work for me: see http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=6726&start=75  I have been through SLA ...

Re: Prius Batteries - How to make them work

To stay on topic, here's how I make the Prius modules work for my 2 bikes, set up the same way: At 6 cells/module, I have 7 modules in series for a 42s block (50.4V nominal for my 48V controller). Then, 2 of these blocks in parallel for a 42s2p. I discharge in parallel with no Schottkey's to join. A...

Re: Schottky Battery Paralell setup... How?

Combined: 40A. The potted shottkey's I made barely get warm. Tom Hi Tom, If that's 40 A continuous, then there will be about 30 W of heat generated. The outside of the assembly might only be warm, but think what the junction temperature inside the diode might be. Nick Hey, Nick, point well taken. T...

Re: Even Newer 4 to 24-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

So, my understanding is that with this relay in parallel to the charger's 120v line, the BMS control circuit would be switched on (via the board jumper) when the charger was turned on, CORRECT ??... and that if I used a Soneil 4808 SRF charger, I could leave it connected all the time to the battery...

Re: Even Newer 4 to 24-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

To be absolutely sure, you could use a DPDT relay and use one side for the control circuit and the other side to disconnect one leg of the charger output. In this case the contacts need to be rated higher than the charger output. Richard, thanks for all your tips, and especially this one! I like th...

Re: Even Newer 4 to 24-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

You could also use a small relay with a 120vac coil. The coil would be wired in parallel with the charger input so it activates anytime the charger is plugged into the wall. Richard, could you suggest a relay from Mouser that would do, like one of these: http://www.mouser.com/catalog/635/1717.pdf ?...

Re: Even Newer 16-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

Gary & Richard, Thanks for carrying the BMS design forward with the new ability to be able to turn off the charge circuit! This will be great for having my charger in the battery box, and not worring about generating unnecessary bypass heat (like all night) after the batteries are done charging....
