Re: Observed trials bike designing
It might take us back to the original problems. I guess I'm just thinking that if you allowed a current/torque ramp equal to or more aggressive than a gas motor you could just tame it with the clutch and see how it feels. We might be overthinking it. As for controllers, My gut feeling is that it wi...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Perhaps a simple current ramp with a set rate of amps/sec that results in output equal to an ICE motor is the solution. Keep it simple and just save some cash for the clutches you plan to burn through. I wonder if Electric Motion would tell us what their throttle logic is like? :) Doesn't that just...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
This raises a couple of questions immediately for me, and I'll probably come up with more as I process it. 1. What do you think an "ideal" map would look like? Is it an inclined plane? A ridge running up and back? 2. How would a controller achieve the varying automatic load response of an...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Using the clutch lever to switch modes could be valuable but simple speed throttle is pretty twitchy and accelerates an unloaded wheel violently. At least on high amp cheap older controllers. What about a speed+current throttle but program it extremely progressive so the first half of the travel is...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
I agree that the dyno and datalogging would be no small task. I guess I was thinking the primary purpose would be to figure out what the unloaded rpm acceleration rate of the ice motor is so you can copy it. I see that being the #1 challenge to getting the feel right. If a rider has the clutch pull...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Perhaps the key here would be to have someone do extensive dyno testing of an ice bike data logging as many things as possible including throttle angle. Then tune your electric motor/controller as closely as possible to match the torque ramp rate and hp profile of the gas bike. Match the rotating m...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Good points on the current vs speed throttle setups. Having a motor spin up to max rpm with just a touch of throttle is no good at all. Simply switching from current throttle when clutch pulled should allow for nice infinite rpm control settings as you decide via ramps and your wrist. You could als...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
When I wrote "why not both" I only meant to suggest that an "E trials" competition should allows competitors to use either one. Throttle only or throttle plus clutch. Let the results show which works better. Ah, gotcha. My misunderstanding. They do & they have. Clutchless bi...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
I haven't given up on the belief that a finely tuned controller with enough amps could obsolete a clutch but I am pretty convinced that a clutch is a way easier solution and way more familiar to most riders at this point. Id rather have one and not use it than realize at the end of a build that I w...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Absolutely not possible by throttle...So I ask, why not just put in a flywheel and clutch? Why not both? Competition improves the breed. If a certain configuration dominates a competition, so be it. It sounds to me that controllers and electric throttles need development and improvement. If there w...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Having piqued my own interest I went out with a GPS on the bike a couple of days ago. 2nd gear not much over 15kmh 3rd gear high 20's 4th gear mid 30's 5th gear finally got over 50kmh 6th - didn't bother I could possibly have eked a few more kmh out of each gear, but the bike was really not too far ...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
6 phase windings and dual controllers could be a suitable setup to gain on both issues. Bigger motors also. Not sure how the sevcon is setup to run the 2012 Polaris Ranger EV, but the "low" setting on the stock three speed switch acts just like a low gear. Need to dig into this a bit deep...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Picked up barely used Vertigo R2 300 in october. 68 kilos and 26Kw 52Nm @crank, what a petrol beast! By my calculations this translates to 1800Nm wheel @1st gear minus 3-4% for the gearbox and the chain drive losses. Clutch drops on the 2nd and 3rd feels brutal even at mid RPM. Injector mapping goe...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Indeed. I should soon be receiving my first shipment of a new flywheel/clutched, brushless e-trials bike, claimed peak 10kw, around 42kg. Interesting, is it a new company? do you have a link? I would assume it does not have the standard trials 21"/18" wheels+tires, shock and fork, or 42kg...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Indeed. That's funny about being able to restart if there's an e-trials in the class! Certainly doesn't happen that way here in Australia, nor in Germany from what I hear from a friend over there. I'm still not quite convinced that, " All of that can be mimicked by electric motor control progra...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
You have a point about using throttle, clutch and brake simultaneously. That does make it a bit tricky. Maybe a pushbutton switch on the brake lever itself so you move your finger over a centimeter or so to engage regen or not, then regen varies according to the first part of the lever movement or f...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
All the carbon is aftermarket add-on covers. EM currently use the Silixcon controller which is very flexible from what I've seen, but I'm not sure it's really capable of the sort of control and logic that might be ideal for trials. Once the likes of KTM make a serious push into electric GasGas trial...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
I started in the '70's, so yep cable clutch only back then. Glad not to have one now. I guess a lot of this comes down to the name of the game. For the most part Observed Trials is simply about who has the most skill at riding a motorbike over difficult terrain without putting their feet down. Addin...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
I haven't ridden a cable clutch in decades, don't think I'm that keen to do so! Are you talking electrically actuated mechanical clutch? Or an electronic non-mechanical clutch? I've never thought about an electrically actuated clutch. Could be intriguing, but I'm not sure how much it would really ac...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Nice torque curve on the TXT 300. Very strong off the bottom. Looks like it was not yet jetted proper to make power as observed above the 6200 rpm break in the power plot. Overall looks to be a great power plant for the class. Unfortunately, with the limitations of the piston engine, it mostly reli...

I love it! It is small, light & cute. Do the tires have a good grip on wet rock? The knobs seem a bit small. Are they made of a good compound? Tubeless or not? There are two tyres available (3, but the third is not a great option for any condition so we ignore it): Kenda Krusade 20 x 4 - quite ...

The link you posted doesn't work as it puts the E-S site in front of it. Nice looking bike and a smart 2 speed gearbox! Any more info/specs on that box and maybe even a possibility to buy those seperately for home builders? It reminds me a bit of the Oset bikes: https://osetbikes.com/au/bikes/new-2...

Re: Observed trials bike designing
Do you have any bnb pics of the 2-speed gearbox internals? No, I haven't pulled one apart yet. It's on my list of things to do! It's impressively compact - 10ml is the recommended amount of oil! I'm guessing it's straight spur gears inside from the sound and feel of it. There's no syncro, but it ch...
