Re: finished my build!

I know what you mean about an eBike giveing you the range to explore new parts of the city. I go all over Tucson, which is really spread out, and haven't needed to get on a bus (thank goodness w/ this virus) or call uber to fetch stuff. You might want to consider one of these Wald baskets like the o...

Re: Time to drop a cell (or two?) from my packs? Speed is getting a bit much.

I'm in the shorts, sandals and T-shirt camp too. I guess protective gear would mean wearing underwear? Nah, it was 106 degrees yesterday. If I had all the gear on that you mentioned here in this desert I would die. If you want to slow the bike down, just get something like a hose clamp that would li...

Re: BATTERY FIRE

It probably put the controller into a suicidal, self destruct mode, but that's just an armchair guess. Could be just about anything, but the controller is between the motor and battery, so........ You can ck the motor easily enough anyway w/o a controller or throttle. A fire in an expensive battery ...

Re: Alternator powered drift trike

Unless you have the specs for that particular alternator, it will be difficult to know how much DC voltage it puts out (unless you want to power it up and test it on a bench) as the voltage regulator determines that on the original vehicle, not necessarily the alternator. Could be a separate regulat...

I'm thinking the same thing. They seemed to attract a "type". Clueless yuppies mainly, who often traveled in herds. The only thing they revolutionized was a brand new way for granny to be run over on the sidewalks.

Re: Front Hub Motor with Shimano Mid Drive Advice

As mentioned, a hub motor (especially one that will be dead weight and un-powered in off road mode) will make the bike handle poorly. I don't know, it seems like a complicated way to do things. Two motors that won't even be used together? You're not going to get a light front hub motor to get you ov...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Just for the fun of it, we could revisit the original premise of this post and leave out the political and national angles for the other forum. Obviously solar is preferable to other sources (the wind ain't always there, but the sun usually is), but it's area dependent. I'm not talking about nationa...

I think you'd better copyright that name. Might be stolen by some electric commode corporation types. That's a good looking bike! I've been wanting to do something w/ those 12V 5AH batteries ever since I discovered that you can buy an 8 pack of them (see link below) for under $100, and that's delive...

Re: How do they make Vespas so quiet?

I have never heard a 2 stroke engine that was quieter than a 4 stroke engine, all things being equal. Except for the Vespas. And I've owned maybe 20 or 30 motorcycles in my life time. 2 strokes don't have valves or an exhaust cycle, so you get a lot of noise that isn't there in a 4 stroke engine. Th...

Re: Cheap 3 kw hub motors?

You're talking about a drag bike, 0 to 20, and it only has to make one run or just a few runs to win the money, right? Buy the cheapest geared used hub motor you can find, get the most voltage you can afford even if it's lead acid batteries, and wire it up w/ an on-off switch and a kill button, no c...

Re: Gates announces three ebike drive belts

I like the idea of a belt drive, but don't see a compelling reason to go to one, especially w/ the expense involved. In the desert where I live, all things made of rubber dry out really fast. Looks like it's only good for a single speed setup?

Re: Electric motors on a weed whacker ? Usable or not?

Yep, a hub motor kit is your best bet. The first thing you discover when going from gas to electric is sticker shock. It ain't cheap, and w/o a kit it gets pretty complicated for a first time build. The kit will give you everything you need for a simple conversion, and you can work with all sorts of...

Re: fixing flats..which brand?

What's a "flat"? Seriously, since I went to slime in the tubes, that ended those pesky things. I'm in the Southwest desert and it's all about thorns. In other areas of the country where rain washes debris onto the side of the road where we ride, I go to thorn proof tubes, a Tuffy clone and slime.

I'm not interested in the politics per se, just thought it makes sense to buy from where I live. We're in a recession, and I support US businesses if possible because I know a lot of people are out of work due to this virus. Apparently that may be difficult or impossible regarding the batteries. Can I buy US made lithium batteries?

I've been looking online for US made eBike batteries and haven't had much luck. It appears that Dakota is sold out of the model I was interested in (a 36V 3.3Ah that I was thinking of buying three of and wiring them together). AllCell appears to be out of stock as well. A rider may run into problems on local ordinances with lights that are anything other than white on the front and red on the rear. On the sides? Who knows. Health insurance in this country sucks compared to Canada, but it need not break the bank. It may indeed be a motor issue as others have said. But before you open it up, ck the bike out thoroughly all over. Look for loose spokes, loose bolts (especially on the axles and brake calipers), missing bolts or nuts, tire pressure, cracks on structural parts, all the things that probably wouldn't...

I never thought of that. Thanks.
