Re: Advice for commuter with kid in SF

Thanks again for the advice. Thanks Snowranger. Good to hear from a local rider. I'm in Cole Valley and commute down to the Financial District. Do you really go Twin Peaks? That sounds crazy. Sounds like a great setup. I've actually looked at the Yuba Mundo as a replacement some day. Do you have a ...

Re: Advice for commuter with kid in SF

I live in SF also, and have been ebike commuting for over 8 years. My route is from the Sunset to the Financial District (16 miles round trip). First 6 years were with a clutched hub motor and the last two with the Bafang mid drive. The hub motor was good when the kids were under 10 but now that the...

Has anyone used this with a cutoff switch for gear changing?

Re: Bafang BBSxx - fault finding and fixes

I recently recently replaced my right side thrust bearing and am back on the road. I was wondering if it matters which way the bearing ring is placed? i.e. facing out or in? I watched a video saying that the ball tray should be facing in. Also, I used a needle nose plier to tighten the internal lock...

Thanks. I watched the video. Not as easy or straightforward as I thought. There seems to be a couple different versions of clutches out there.

Thanks. I'm not running excessive power. My daughter just likes to jam on the throttle.

Tack weld BMC/MAC Clutch

My clutches have been breaking so often that I am thinking about throwing in the towel and tack welding them. I have been playing around with a 50 amp 120V stick welder but cannot get enough penetration to make a weld. I am a newbie welder BTW. Has anyone else done this? Should I get a 1/16" welding...

Re: Bafang BBS02 Top Speed?

With the right gearing and you adding in about 300 watts of pedaling, you can definitely hit 35 mph. My bbs02 tops out at 32 but could definitely make it with higher gearing.

Re: Yuba Mundo BBS02/Nuvinci (3400 mile update)

Even with the long tail cargo bike, I was getting persistent chain dropping on bumpy roads. I imagine many are dealing with chain ring derailment. It is nerve racking to jam the chain between the motor and chain ring at 30mph through an intersection. After trying a few things, I used the Origin8 cha...

Can you post a link to the circuit you are using? I tried using one of the diagrams I found, but could not get it to work. Here you go, this is what I used, please excuse the spelling mistake. Re: New Bafang Crank-Drives

Thanks. I had a read of the english-ish manual and it seems to use the ebrake sensor to cut the motor power. I have found this method way too slow to return power to the motor. Using Kepler's circuit the recovery is almost instant as it simulates a slight throttle twist to cut the power. Can you po...

Re: Advice requested for e-bike kit for Yuba Mundo

I can pretty much go up anything with my bafang mid drive; however, you need to secure that rear axle since the Yuba has large horizontal dropouts. See pic.

Re: Advice requested for e-bike kit for Yuba Mundo

A front hub motor would be the cheapest.

The extra wide rear yuba drop-outs require an axle adapter (about $20). Also, you do not need to buy a new freewheel for front drive application.

Re: Bafang BBSxx - fault finding and fixes

I didn't find metal fillings. Large cog is fine (just minor wear visible). I will inspect again soon to check for grease and wear. After ~ 300km everything is still quiet. I just changed my pinion gear last night. So much quieter and smoother. I got 2500 miles out of this gear. I am wondering what ...

Re: Yuba Mundo BBS02/Nuvinci

Fraser, I have a 20t sprocket on the Nuvinci hub. That gives me 10 - 35t. However, my front chain ring is a single 46t. That gives me a low ratio of 46/35 or 1.31. A mountain bike would give 22/32 or .69 . To get the same gearing you would need to use a 22t chainring up front. I don't think this is ...

Re: Nuvinci 171 spokes breaking

I ended up getting double butted spokes (14-15-14) from dans comp. They have really good prices. http://www.danscomp.com/products-PARTS/435915/Sapim_Stainless_Double_Butted_Spoke.html I might get a sun rynolite rim which also uses 207 mm spokes. I forgot that thinner butted ones are stronger than la...

Re: Nuvinci 171 spokes breaking

Thanks for the response. They are breaking at the nipple end. The bike is a heavy yuba mundo with 2.0 schwalbe marathon tires, run at 40 psi. Two kids ride on the back for about 2 miles per day. My total commute is about 20 miles through San Francisco hills. I actually built the wheel myself with st...

Nuvinci 171 spokes breaking

I have been running my N171 developer kit with the bbs02 for about 1500 miles. I regularly do 23 percent grades, and love it. The torque must be pretty high because all of a sudden, my spokes are breaking at the nipple end. They are 14ga size. I never had this problem with the BMC geared hub with si...
