The E-Gull

I've been wanting to share info about this project with the group, but I wanted it to fly first. This is my new plane the E-Gull! A conversion of the awesome ThunderGull combined with a Zero Motorcycles powerplant. It flies even better than I hoped!

Re: insane/stupid/crazy power RC Quad X copter?

LFP and I built a 4+kW dodecacopter a couple years ago. It was capable of lifting about 10kg. This was one of the precursors to my RotorBits product line. Yes you can build this exact same 'copter from RotorBits and HobbyKing parts. I'm pretty sure you could build a man-carrying 'copter from RotorBi...

emotofreak - I would be interested! Thanks. I actually built two but cannot find the completed pics anywhere :( Here's what I got. The idea is it's SUPER GENERIC. You can run the roadster version with or without a lycra skirt. Or you could fab a coupe top for maximum aero and environmental protecti...

Re: Evehicle-Full Faring Kit for Tadpole?

The 24 hour race record for a pedal vehicle I think is now held by a German gentleman in his mid 50's that was riding a production velomobile. He AVERAGED about 35mph for 24 hours. That blows me away even more than the streamliners hitting 80+ mph at the end of a 5 mile course. Or how 'bout over 55...

Re: Evehicle-Full Faring Kit for Tadpole?

If you're trying to do it on a budget, something like John Tetz zotefoam or a coroplast fairing are fairly cheap and easy to make. Plus it's easy to tweak and modify, and you won't be as sad if it gets scratched :) I actually designed/build a composite trike streamlined fairing called the "pod". It ...

Re: Electric Race Kart

After a dozen races, some with 5-6 karts running simultaneously, this is the only crappy footage I could find... I don't think they really convey the sense of speed and acceleration these karts posses. 10-15 minutes of hard racing leaves you sore and sweaty :) Maybe we'll stage a race with a dedicat...

Re: Electric Race Kart

Old Zero X/MX drivetrains are awesome. The zero guys have built a lot of em and they're a riot for stealthy parking lot races. Perm or agni motor, with an alltrax AXE at 400amps and a zero battery = fun. Giant smoky burnouts, doughnuts and figure 8's are the norm. I'll dig up some pics and vids.

I like Miles per kWh (M/kWh) as it is roughly synonymous with MPG. People will intuitively understand this. The xprize guys are pushing the MPGe standard.

Effects of C rate on Cycle Life for LiPo?

Just curious if anyone has any good data on how running LiPo's at less than their rated C, and possibly capping the charge and discharge voltage limits somewhat, can effect their cycle life? A LiPo vendor has quoted me approx 300 cycles to 80% capacity at a 100% 30c discharge. I am only going to see...

Re: X Prize Winners

You know, it really is about the people. I worked with Nissan for a bit as a design consultant, over beers one evening we discussed Nissans (at the time) lack of EV or Hybrid projects. The design lead told me "we'd sell cars that ran on sh*t if people would buy them". Though I do think the marketing...

Re: Brammo Empulse

Actually the comparison is probably pretty close in terms of total performance. i.e. Acceleration and Top Speed. Ninja 250's are a lot of fun, I don't think it's a demeaning comparison. Comparing the Empulse, for which no real test data exists, to a Triumph Street Triple is probably a bigger stretch...

Re: Zephyr, successfully landed after 14 days (336hs 21mins)

Fascinating! This is as big an accomplishment as Dick and Jeana's flight around the world in the Voyager. Persistent autonomous aircraft could be better (and worse) than satellites in so many ways. Being able to stretch out a team of these things could provide near-instant communications to anywhere...

Re: Need a 50-100kW motor

Paying good money for a proven motor is not off the table. But the prices are a bit silly when you get way up there. I'm tempted to put 8 of those HK 7kW RC motors in a box and voila, instant 50 kW power for $800. Well not instant, have to figure belts or gears or something into the equation, but st...
