Re: E-bike or E-trike for winter commuting?

After breaking my wrist I'll never ride on ice with two wheels again. The trike sounds like the winter best option.

P.S. What's a "car" lane?

Take A Look eyeglass mirror

These make it easy to scan the whole road behind you by just moving your head slightly. One mirror works on all your bikes.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=e3bjSapKtEBvwtVH7U2Xmw_3d_3d 44.4% of respondants so far agree standard bikes without turn signals headlight and stop light should be banned from the street. Re: Throttle mods for drop bars.

I have a thumb throttle on the left side. I made a special mount for it by silver soldering a shaft to a jubilee clip. Do you have pictures of this setup? I'm currently using an old aerobar to hold my twist throttle close to my brake hood and would rather use a thumb throttle while my hand is on th...

Re: Do you use clip in shoes?

I use pedals that are SPD on one side and platform on the other. I use my touring shoes with recessed clips for commuting but just regular shoes for local errands. It's nice to have the choice.

Re: How much money have you spent on ebikes?

I use mine for commuting. Excluding the cost of the commuter bike I already had, I've spent $350 so far but will spend another couple hundred on a battery upgrade when the SLAs finally go.

Re: Best way to add left-hand chainwheel at crank for motor?

You really should rethink the no FW idea. I have 2 bikes with 360w Cyclones and I had a freewheel problem on one of them and used it 1 time without the freewheel and was sorry I did. I was only trying to do a normal 60 to 80 cadence too. Trust me you do need a freewheel for your own safety. Details...

Re: Best way to add left-hand chainwheel at crank for motor?

I bought a pair of inexpensive tandem timing crank arms and used one of them with the existing right crank arm to make a stoker crank set. No freewheeling but I kept all my gear combos. Great idea. Did a little looking online, and found a place that sells LH tandem cranks separately: http://www.ebi...

Sounds like you want to do exactly what I already did. Yet another good thing about a non-hub motor is that I can downshift. Top speed in my granny gear is only about 7-8 MPH! :D

Re: what kind of helmets do you guys wear?

That simply is not true in many if not most such accidents I've responded to. <snip> Bones heal, cuts heal, abrasions heal, brain damage is permanent and can be terribly debilitating. There is no good reason to not wear an appropriate helmet. What about all the head injuries you see on vehicle occu...

Re: how much are you saving using your ebike?

I'm saving about $2 a day. I used to take my bike into work on the bus then ride it home but now I can ride both ways. It cost about $350 to set up so I should break even this summer.

Re: Stokemonkey Knock-off

Nice work. Thanks. How do you find changing gears under power, does the 'assist' match your cadence uphill, downhill, etc? Are you able to hold a significantly higher cadence uphill? I've found that I need ease off the throttle a little bit to shift. I like to spin and have it geared so it spins th...

I'm lovin the buckets, you could put alot of batteries in there, along with the groceries. I had the buckets before I added the motor. Things tend to get soggy here in the NW. :D I am a little concerned about your mounting location, I guess you better wear lycra shorts or you might end up naked. Ho...

Re: Your Creation's Before & After Pics

I converted a Novara Randonee touring bike using a Cyclone 500W motor. I didn't want to lose my triple up front so I copied the StokeMonkey design:

No freewheeling crank but that's ok with me. Performs great on all the local hills.
