Re: jonescg's NEW electric racebike BUILD thread!

Just thinking aloud here, are you likely to use your 9kWh pack again? It's probably not enough for an Isle of Man! Just wondering if it would be less work to use half of that one instead of building a new 4.5kWh pack for me! But then what could the other half be used for?

Re: Grinhilia - my Aprilia RS125 Conversion

Hey Chris thanks for your assistance with battery box design. The first attempt based on this sketch shows the battery box in front of the controller, but it protruded in front of the fairing a little and I wasn't happy with the front wheel clearance. 1221s.jpg 1315s.jpg So I lifted the box above th...

Re: Grinhilia - my Aprilia RS125 Conversion

That would be great to see, I also seriously considered the 207, it would be ideal in the aircooled version for an even lighter weight (no cooling components), and a few mm smaller diameter makes fitting batteries that much easier. I'm sure there would be a suitable Sevcon controller for it also. Th...

Here's one example, this stuff is recommended by Rinehart Motion Systems. http://www.champcable.com/product/exrad-xle-1000-volt-shielded-cable However, I don't know of any suppliers that will sell it by the foot, you may have to buy a whole drum of it. Let us know if you do find some. Maybe tell us ...

Re: Anyone here study Control Theory?

I studied control theory at university about thirty years ago, then did some real-world applications in the water treatment industry a few years after that. The majority of jobs could be done with your basic PID (we used Programmable Logic Controllers which had a built-in PID function), but there we...

Re: Commuter Booster - <1kg Friction Drive

What kind of contact cement did you use? The belt sander material is grit 40 I presume? Yep I think its 40, if you can get 60 or 80 that would be OK too and possibly less tyre wear. Here's the glue I used, but the brand wouldn't matter. I used the "spread on both bits then wait for it to be almost ...

Re: NSW Storms - would you survive with no power?

Yep, no solar. There are quite a few houses in my area with grid-connected PV panels, following some great government incentives, but of course they were done in the cheapest way possible, inverters that don't support autonomous operation (Grid not available = power not available). I was talking to ...

NSW Storms - would you survive with no power?

I've had to consider this question. With wild storms hitting the Hunter Region of NSW earlier this week, I find myself posting this from a laptop which has been charged from my e-bike batteries. We've had no mains electricity for over 3 days now, and it could be up to a week before its restored. A f...

Re: Commuter Booster - <1kg Friction Drive

I had the belt sander material stuck with contact cement, lasted 2 years until no grit left (though went through two tyres, small price to pay for great performance). No lifting at all. Went with the same again, works great, highly recommended. I think it would be difficult to prevent a steel can fr...

Re: Grinhilia - my Aprilia RS125 Conversion

Nice work Rip. So the plates are only attached in the centre, and just lean against the upper and lower frame tubes to prevent rotation? My main reason for hesitating to cut the swingarm bolt is the large increase over stock power which I will have, so I don't want to make any structural changes to ...

Probably around 360V.

Hey speaking of big chunky hub motors, have you seen Ripperton's Posty Bike (on DIYelectriccar) - he's joined two of the big QS motors together. That would be a pretty good bang/buck ratio.

Re: Grinhilia - my Aprilia RS125 Conversion

My motor arrived, packaged very nicely in a small wooden box. While 12 kg doesn't sound like a lot of weight, when you pick it up the immediate thought is - wow that's heavy! It is a work of art, really well made. The mounting bolts are eight M8 on a 78mm PCD (pitch circle diameter). The spacing is ...

Re: Grinhilia - my Aprilia RS125 Conversion

So they frown on fitting a stonking great hub motor in the back wheel ? Not necessarily, if it's balanced by a stonking great battery pack! Remember also the weight of an exhaust and chain/sprockets would offset the hub motor a bit. There's still a get-out-of-jail card if required, just make it res...

I'm assuming that you are going with a "skid-steer" arrangement like a Bobcat. Could you find a wrecked Bobcat as a starting point?

Good luck!

Welcome to E.S. ... try not to think about your budget too much. Another fairly common approach is to come up with a range that you need, and build to that. Y...

Re: Grinhilia - my Aprilia RS125 Conversion

I bought myself a motorcycle lift table, which is awesome for working on bikes. It was a pretty straightforward engine removal, as usual there were heaps of pipes, brackets and wires. The trickiest part about it was the fact that the main swingarm pivot bolt runs throught the rear of the gearbox cas...
