Re: Can only set BBSHD to 28amps max?

Was wondering if anyone knows of an "unlocked" version of the firmware that would permit changing of the max amps, sped etc. From what I understand there is an opensource version of the firmware, I just don't know how likely it is to brick the controller. Was hoping for something fairly s...

Re: la Nina rears her ugly head

They're saying La Nina is officially back and should last through spring. This means more rain up north, less rain down south and about normal where I am. La nina.JPG Normal would be great at this point. The forecast here is looking hopeful. It would be the first measurable rain in about 6 months. 1...

There are usually pads on the board somewhere. I don't see them in the picture, but probably somewhere else. Look for pads marked RX and TX. You will also need the right software to talk to the controller.

Re: Surron throttle not usable for slow speed

Yes, the controller behaves like it has "speed command", so even the slightest change in throttle can give a full power surge. It seems worse when the speed limiting is engaged. It does take some getting used to. What you want is a "torque command" throttle so a small sudden incr...

Re: C Cab Hot Rod Power Advice

If you went direct drive from the motors to the wheels, it could probably go too fast (downhill), but you need the gearing to prevent overloading the motors. If the gearing is too tall, the motors will never get close to their no-load speed on flat ground and most likely overheat. You'd lose a lot o...

Re: C Cab Hot Rod Power Advice

It depends on the controller. Most inexpensive controllers will have a "speed command" where the motor speed is a direct function of the throttle setting. With the wheel off the ground or chain removed, the motor RPM should be directly proportional to the throttle. When starting out from a...

Very cool. When I steal your design I plane on using electric steel laminations for the jig fins and leaving them in when potting the stator. That's what I was thinking would be a good idea. Similar to the Lynch motor. You would still have some iron losses, but much less than a conventional stator....

Re: First e-bike build: Need help diagnosing motor/controller problem

If it's a geared hub motor and the controller is spinning it backwards, it will make noise but not drive the wheel.

Try some other hall/phase combinations. Don't give full throttle unless it sounds like it's running properly.

They were talking about a chance of rain this Friday, but now I see they took that out of the forecast.
I hope the showers down south hit that big fire. The smoke has been making it up here.

Re: Can i tap charging lead to draw small power for light?

I use the charging input on my pack to run my electric air pump. As mentioned above, there would be no protection against over discharge and the maximum current you can pull will be in the ballpark of what the charger puts out. 18w should be no problem.

Re: Thread for new battery breakthrough PR releases

I think some of the weld-free packs done on the forum here look better than theirs. I'm still not convinced that weld-free compression packs will hold up long term. There will either be corrosion on the contacts or the ends of the cells will get dented. But I see some that have been working for a wh...

Re: Sur Ron Storm Motor + Different Controllers Problem

Try measuring the current at full throttle with the wheel off the ground or chain removed. You may need to swap around the hall or phase wires to a different color. Don't assume that by matching the colors it will be correct. The ASI has a million parameters in software that need to be set correctly...

Great work! Nice to see you have it running. I have some of the same batteries for a standby power setup. The good cells are very good but there were a few bad cells. They should last for many years. You should be able to surprise people with the acceleration, especially since it's so quiet.

Re: Puzzling battery issues with a Luna Wolf battery pack

Back to the original question, if the battery is cutting off when it shows around 76%, most likely there is one or more cell groups that is going low prematurely and triggering the low voltage cutoff. This can happen if there is a defective cell or if the welds are bad or if one cell group has a ste...

Another front misses. A little rain to the north, which is good for the fire fighters, but not a drop here. The rain season here officially ends September 30. 10.5" total. If we have another dry year, it's going to get really serious for the water supply.

Re: C Cab Hot Rod Power Advice

Having twice as much power as you need is always fun. Also good for going up hills.

Since your charger has a big 58 written on it I would guess that’s the voltage. That’s pretty close to optimal.

Re: C Cab Hot Rod Power Advice

You can measure the voltage coming out of the charger.

If your pack is 14s, then 4.2v/cell = 58.8v. This is the absolute maximum voltage you should use.
4.05v/cell works out to 56.7v.

Yes, those motors can produce a lot of torque. Design for what it takes to make the wheels skid on pavement.

If the low inductance causes controller issues, you can place inductors in series with the phase wires between the motor and controller. While this adds some loss, it can be pretty minimal with the right inductors.

Re: Kelly Controller power ratings

From what I have heard, Kelly current ratings are phase current, not battery current, so the numbers will be much higher for a given power rating. This makes comparison with other controllers difficult. Phase current can be 3x the battery current.
