Re: Something other than a hub or mid drive

Nice build :thumb: Here's a 1996 example of a motor and chain drive on the left side of the wheel. During the trial stages of development letting off the throttle would cause the re-generation energy to blow the caps in the controller. To stop this problem a BMX freewheel was added to the left side ...

Re: streamline fairings?

Based on Glen Brown's work I've always thought a composite touring bike where the stowage was integrated into the design could make a fast upright bike. i.e. the stowage area is the bicycle frame structure. An analogy would be a comparison of the Brightstar Swift composite hang glider verse a stretc...

Re: streamline fairings?

Having done hundreds of coast down tests to refine streamlined shapes I can firmly say they can an do add efficiency. My testing was done with precision measuring equipment and are repeatable. Sure ... it's entirely possible to get it wrong ... that's why you test. Thing is ... the upright bicycle p...

Re: Converting scooter to recumbent and to electric streamliner

These type endeavors should be approached like art. Do it to satisfy your own personal needs and curiosity not to sell to others. Undoubtedly there are custom car and motorcycle builders in your country that know the ins and outs for any license, registration and insurance needs. The CAD doodle pres...

Re: Converting scooter to recumbent and to electric streamliner

A couple gotchas to consider ... When buying recumbent bicycle manufactures liability insurance it was a confusing experience. Because sales volumes were so low there were no risk studies to gauge how high a risk recumbents actually are. So the rates were based on the highest risk ... mountain bikes...

Re: Help with sizing BMS

Seems like finding a 150a or 200a bms is harder than I thought. Could I use the 100a bms that I have just to charge and balance the batteries and then unplug the bms and use the batteries without it? I believe my esc could stop the batteries when I set a low voltage. This BMS stuff is confusing me ...

Re: Truing this Disc rotor is trying my patience

Clever Steve. In effect you created a lathe or milling machine. Rare for the hubs to be out of true at the rotor interface by virtue of how they are created. Rare for sure. When other new discs where tried the results were the same. That's when the dial indicator came out. Some of the hard lessons ...

Kraig Shultz was hoping to do something similar, some years ago. Not enough interest. http://www.schultzengineering.us/delta-x2-1.htm To paraphrase you: You can drag a horse's ass to water, but it is the wrong end for drinking. Yep ... I'm familiar with his work. Mostly thru keeping an eye o...

Re: Truing this Disc rotor is trying my patience

Recently had a cargo trike build where one of the disc brake rotors had a wobble. Turned out the rotor was fine and the disc mounting surface on the hub was not machined properly. It was a very small amount but enough to cause the kind of noise as seen in your video. Measuring the run out of mountin...

Re: Converting scooter to recumbent and to electric streamliner

I talked to Richard Hatfield for perhaps a half hour, at the 2010 VIR TTXGP. He seemed like a very pleasant, and knowledgeable guy. His "flying banana" was clearly the fastest bike there. Lightning has several speed records, at Pikes Peak, and Bonneville. I don't know if he is independent...

Re: Some questions for an Electric ATV Build

15 ~ 16 years ago I did the fabrication work to electrify a Kawasaki Bayou 250 The customer bought the electric parts from Thunderstruck. Pretty sure the motor / controller was the 48V AC-9, Curtis controller powered by 15 CALB 72ah batteries. Customers use was off-road farm duty where it seemed to ...

Re: Converting scooter to recumbent and to electric streamliner

Good find but Lightning Motorcycle is far from "dodgy" They are high quality, expensive, very fast bikes. Modified scooter looks good, and would love to try it. This one is not freeway capable if that's a requirement for SaladFish or not. Design brief : Feet behind the front wheel is essen...

Re: Converting scooter to recumbent and to electric streamliner

Over the years I've owned around fifty motorcycles. Most were off-road however the last 10 years of my working life was spent commuting 60 miles into San Fransisco Bay traffic where riding a motorcycle was the only reasonable option ... for me. A BMW sport bike was by far the least comfortable and l...

Re: Converting scooter to recumbent and to electric streamliner

Hello, I had this idea recently. My motorcycle is fuel efficient 48.8km/L but it has an uncomfortable road bike seating position which I dread since I work a physicals job. I want comfort, super efficiency and lane filtering fun! Using an existing vehicle saves thousands in red tape (engineering). ...

Actually ... in my polite subtle way, the provided links are to suggest putting some focus on problems in your home town rather then trying to solve problems half a world away. Have no concern, I am more than a little aware of the issues Australia has created for itself , as well as the UK and Germ...

The British recumbent motorcycle guru, Royce Creasy, has finally realized our species is brain dead, and about to go extinct. https://bikeweb.com/node/3790 That said, if you are young, you probably still have a decade to have fun before then. Check out the many bikes on the site for inspiration. ht...

Yes ... there has been some conversions of gasoline powered scooters into streamliners. Browse for the "Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge" and you'll find something. Clive "Ernie" Buckler from Spokane converted a least one (maybe two ?) mid sized scooters into a streamliners. I...

I was replying to Jack actually, ….but you seem to have adopted the same approach. So its not as easy as you suggested ?… Let me help you here,…my “imaginable” estimate for a generation system using primarily Wind and Solar, would be somewhere north of 800 -1000 GWh , …but even that would not provi...
