Re: Why the BMS Doesn't Work as You Believe

Ask Elon Must about it about the battery charging and why the BMS is not needed. He is the guy who successfully designed (and engineered) his electric cars and how their batteries have shown to hold up. Hey, I just got off the phone with Elon Musk, and it turns out, Tesla actually does use a BMS, i...

Re: Lifepo4 battery needed for qs138 70h v3

The S value affecting voltage above is correct, and an oversimplification answer is that higher voltage=higher speed. P value of how many cells in parallel per series connection...this typically affects your range, more in parallel means longer range. But as I was describing earlier, it's going to a...

Re: Electric conversion of a 1984 Honda CM450

Couple months of use, and I wanted to update, for anyone else referencing the post for their own builds. I commute 5 miles round trip every day. So far I'm still limited to direct solar charging, which is a lovely idea in concept but means I'm highly dependent on the weather if I want to plan a long...

Re: Lifepo4 battery needed for qs138 70h v3

I used 32650's for my e-moto, https://www.endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=117496 , so I can comment. I'm sure they're not exactly the same spec as what you're looking at, but they'll be close enough for a comparision. I used 24s12p, and I built the battery myself. Total weight was about 11...

Re: Help with Razor Trike Conversion

Depending on manufacturer, they could be would a couple of different ways, with either aluminum or copper, and if it's copper, you can bet it'll take a decent amount higher volts and amps than what it's rated for. Interesting. I've never seen a hubmotor wound with aluminum wire; I suppose someone c...

Re: Help with Razor Trike Conversion

Just for my 2 cents, I've done a ton of playing around with those hoverboard motors. They're fun. They can usually be ran at up to 48v without worrying about the motor surviving. Depending on manufacturer, they could be would a couple of different ways, with either aluminum or copper, and if it's co...

Re: Why the BMS Doesn't Work as You Believe

Another thing you need to know is that the electricity doesn't travel from one point to another as it doesn't have a direction. They appear instantly when the positive and negative ends are connected. The electricity doesn't travel slowly from positive end of the cell to the negative side of the ne...

Re: DIY spot welder Transformer inrush current?

The C1 and C2 settings do indeed adjust output current, don't ask me how, I just know that they do. I think I currently have it at C1:80, C2:60, T1 and 2 both less than 10, interval @05. Welding .15mm nickel to 18650s and 32650s. But that's just my variables; yours uses a different transformer, and ...

Re: Is a motor controller essentially an inverter? Amp reading accuracy

Alright then, you brought up analog solutions, and my next question is still on topic, in a way. I can make a battery from a number of different sources. I can rewind copper and rearrange magnets to make a motor. Not a good one, but I've done it. But if my controller fails, or if I don't have access...

Re: DIY spot welder Transformer inrush current?

I used the same controller for mine, doesn't work perfect, works just as well as I need it to, though. Made over 2000 welds for my emoto build, no sweat. To find the setting that works, with your transformer and your voltage, you're just gonna need to spend an hour with scrap nickel, copper and dead...

Re: Is a motor controller essentially an inverter? Amp reading accuracy

An analog meter is more continuous, but may still not respond instantly to peaks, since the meter movement itself has inertia and physical resistance to movement from it's return spring, so it may miss short spikes of current. It's less likely to miss significant spikes than the digital meter is, h...

Is a motor controller essentially an inverter? Amp reading accuracy

Trying to get my head around the battery amperage coming from my motorcycle. Pure sine wave inverters pull varying amounts of amperage from a battery to simulate sine wave. And that this may affect amp readings, because the actual amp draw may experience peaks of, say, 40% more than what's being rea...

I am indeed talking about power surges for a few seconds, but a few seconds is what it takes to bring you from zero to... well, some scary speed  It is possible to set up the time delay for which you want the BMS to trigger in the BMS app, . So you can tell the BMS "don't trigger if the p...

Great thread! I love all your professionalism and small details. Forgive me if you answered it earlier, but I'd like to know, were you ever able to find a spec sheet for your battery? And I'd like to know which ANT BMS you got. Im asking because I see you post several times about what battery amps (...

Re: I need acceleration, not range or top speed.

Are headways still around? I’ve seen quite a few puffed and busted over the years. I haven't used them personally, so I can't vouch, I just got drawn in by the 200A rating. But even if it's an accurate rating, I would never use them at that rate on a regular basis. Perhaps I would use 2p and draw 3...

Re: Battery capacity display that actually is accurate

Im building my intuition with everything stated above, so thank you for the reassurance that I'm doing it "right." Well, as least right for me. I also raised the low voltage cutoff levels in my bms. So if I ever were out and my controller shutoff, I can use my phone to readjust the bms and...

Re: I need acceleration, not range or top speed.

If you really don't care about range, check out Headway LiFePO4 batteries from batteryhookup.com. I was going to use them in my build, but decided I wanted range. Theyre supposed to be rated for 200A continuous discharge, and they're cylindrical so they don't need compression.

Re: Battery capacity display that actually is accurate

Sag will always be interpreted as lower SOC than what's actually remaining. But you can infer SOC from resting voltage, if you understand your battery's discharge voltage curve. This I understand, it is what I am doing currently. It's just a bit more difficult with LiFePO4, since the discharge curv...

Electric conversion of a 1984 Honda CM450

I was attracted to YouTube videos of electric motorcycle conversions and I kept thinking that it seemed doable, even for my inexperienced talents. So when I came across an old Honda with a dead engine going for $150, I went for it. This was mid-May of this year, about 4 months ago. IMG_20220525_1942...
