Re: Giant Xtracycle Build Log (Stokemonk-ish?)

OK next issue. Steer-tube size and headset selection: I have a 7in dimension from top bearing race to the bottom. The ID of the frame head tube is about 1.3", give or take about .030". How do I tell what steer tube diameter to use? It seems to me this would technically fit a 1 1/8" steer tube, but I...

Oops, just realized i double posted that...
A new frame is probably far better a choice now that I'm thinking on it. Those Worksman bikes look nice.

Re: Failure Analysis of a Cracked Frame - Recommended Steel Cruiser (Feet Forward) ?

If you attempt to salvage that frame, cut out that gobshite top tube, and replace it with a good chunk of like 1 1/4 by 2 by .065 or maybe .080 wall rectangular tube, have a metal shop till it to the rough shape of the old one and weld it in for you. Probably cost you about as much as a new frame.

Re: High performance & durability Cannondale Semi Recumbent

I'm not super clear on what your goals for the recumbent are (I may have read a while back but don't recall entirely, other than durable on pothole roads and fast 40mph or so), and don't know if you've already thought about it, but here's a throwback to Justin's trans-Canadian rig . It has a semi-re...

Xtracycle Build Log

I acquired a giant frame a while back (probably over 2 years ago, $15), with the intent of incorporating it into some sort of cargo-bike build. It's steel or chromo, and is rather large (maybe 20" seat tube). Well today I spotted this little gem: https://i.imgur.com/XVTizGr.png So I went, I saw, I h...

Oh come on now, hub motors have their place above water too... holding a mailbox in place.

Re: High performance & durability Cannondale Semi Recumbent

I'm sorry your not building bone at the expected rate. Did they say anything about impact vs resistance activity? This would be the difference between an elliptical (or cycle) and a treadmill training. The first is more beneficial to the joints, the other to the bones. I'm mostly just curious. That'...

Well there's a sweet deal! I love tadpole trikes, and at some point will build one. I have to get through my cruiser, cargo-zoom, and maybe a kickbike builds first though.

Oooooo clever touch with the vinyl siding! That's a relatively easy way to make an aluminum box look fantastic!

That zizzo looks really close in design to the expressway, so I think it will do well enough. Bbs02 is usually a solid bet. I'm not sure on the battery... I'm not up to speed on offerings from ali. Let's see pictures when you're done, and good luck with the assembly! There are lots of tutorials on t...

Re: Is this corrosion in my hub motor?

Once you get it all cleaned up (check the bearings, they may need replacement if they "catch" at all while turning by hand), you can use something like this to help prevent oxidation in the future: https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/stops-rust/rust-inhibitor/ It's not paint an...

Re: I'm down a rabbit hole

It is important to find a bike you're comfortable with, one that will take the weight in stride, and one which allows for conversion. I found all three in the Expressway I mentioned earlier (to be clear: I haven't converted it, but would be totally comfortable doing so). I'm not sure about all of Da...

These absolutely need to be electrified. I started trying to make one from a regular MTB frame, but stopped halfway through to take care of two other projects. Plus I'm just not sure I want to completely build a kick-bike frame from the ground up... I'll probably just keep an eye out for a steal on ...

Re: Steampunk Voltmeter?

Going by the face values this looks like a pocket load tester of some sort... kind of like that thing the auto parts store uses to check your car battery. As most of us might know, resting voltage isn't a good indicator of a battery's health or charge. Apply a load to it with known resistance and me...

Re: New York to legalize ebikes?

It doesn't affect me a whole lot since I live in Oregon, but I've always found it annoying to know that NY banned ebikes, as it seemed counter-productive to climate goals. Cars sitting in cities idling with the AC on accounts for some significant percentage of the CO2 emissions we're supposed to be ...

Re: Giant cruiser budget build

Yeah I'll use fresh port orford (yellow) cedar for the siding. I'm going to make it look "crate-like" on the sides by doing a slightly too-thick glue-up of strips about 1-1/2" wide, and then planing it to 1/4" thick... I think. I might have to experiment a little with the look. I do want to put the ...

New York to legalize ebikes?

It appears legislators at the state level have done so, but the city still will retain the right to ban them:

Did a real run tonight just to pick up an efficiency figure. I did 9.83 miles on 199.5 W-hr, so 20.3 W-hr/mile. With the above 900 ish w-hr pack i should be able to get around 40 miles mostly non pedal riding.

Re: Giant cruiser budget build

Ok taking a brief look ahead to building the main integrated battery, it optimistically looks like i could fit about 130 cells within the template I've made for the box. The nearest reasonable configuration is 12s10p, which leaves me a little wiggle room for extra cells in some strings to make up fo...
