Re: First Foolish Fifty-Miler

Interesting post! My longest trip before electric was 40 miles and my butt was in bad shape. Since then wearing true bike shorts with the gel pad 35 is really my comfort range. I think I just have a "time" in the seat range meaning actual minuets in the seat not miles. With my BMC on 75 v 15ah lipo ...

Re: Geared hub motors: BMC vs MAC Shanghai

I can't compare the BMC to anything else since it's my first e-bike motor but I can tell you it works flawlessly. Ilia really set me up right. Mine is running 18s3p lipo 5000 mah cells pushing my 215 lbs 6'-4" body on an extra large Specialized Crossroads Hybrid sitting upright (it's a comfort bike ...

This is what I went with. I can ride a wheelie for about 50 ft...(well only sometimes!) so it's not lacking torque.

Re: School me on hub drives

For me I wanted low end torque most of all because it's a bike and used at slower speeds. Stop and go on streets, trails or what have you. I'm 6'4" tall and 215 lbs so I'm not a light weight. I have some pretty steep hills and was realistic knowing that being a bike and riding on trails, paths, side...

Re: Tidal X-Force 5303

Ended up doing 35 miles. 10 were 30mph + the rest was in the 20s. I ended up blowing through 90% of my pack. Peaked at 48mph. Avg 22. 80A. Peak 22A Regen Current. Low voltage 63v. I check my packs with my medic when I got home. My new zippy packs was pretty much balanced with 0.01v deviation. My ol...

Re: Tidal X-Force 5303

That is a lot faster and farther than I would have thought. That's cool for you. Mine will prolly only do 22 to 24 miles unassisted but that is full throttle starts. I haven't tried slower speeds and that was balls to the walls throttle. I have my CA set at 20 amps max too. I guess those direct driv...

Re: BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15a

Did some more running with the bike. I ran around on a couple smaller rides and have to say I'm really liking this BMC S hub. It really has some great torque. I ran a 21.4 mile trip and peddled the whole time and used 21.6 watts per mile. Tonight I went for a no peddle ride to see what kind of range...

Re: Tidal X-Force 5303

I went out on a ride this afternoon. I was cycling my pack. I didnt hit it across the head with a full discharge but I molested it enough to let it know who's its daddy. I did 12AH out of 15AH. Thats an 80% DOD. I came home and checked all the packs with my medic individually. This They all read th...

I gotta admit my heart sunk. Time slowed down. My heart started beating fast. I was hoping it was something simple.I instantly felt my wallet get lighter. All of the connectors looked fine at a glance but if you look closer the connectors were sunkern/melted into their housing. Im certainly thinkin...

To add next I want to do a full suspension 40 to 45 mph bike........just not sure if i want to go R/C or brushless direct drive hub at 100 volts or so.

Recommendations welcome!

Re: BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15a

Alrighty then I went for a ride on just electric power to see how long I could go. Time was limited so I just ran a 75v 10 amp pack or 3s2p 6s 5000 lipos. This thing has tons of bottom end torque. I can punch (thumb throttle!) it and pull up the front wheel and ride a 10 to 15 ft wheelie....yea that...

Re: BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15a

But you did KNOW what I meant?!?! Picky definitely comes to mind...... I'll rephrase and say I was only able to draw 10 of the available 12 amps CAPACITY out of my battery pack. As I said before if it isn't enough add some more amp hours! I betcha a 20 amp hour pack should give me enough power to re...

Re: BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15a

Well I took a 34 mile trip today and pretty much used the battery up. I never run below 22.2 volts on a 6s pack but today I ran down as low as 65.9 volts at the end of the ride. I used 10.2 amps out of the 12 available which sucks! I was really hoping to use the full 12 amps going with the 80% rule ...

Re: BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15a

The newer versions of the BMC may be a lot tougher than the old ones, I will keep mine running on 50V for ultimate reliability and 30mph is plenty quick enough for me, if people want to really advance this hobby how about making a hub motor with an internal 3 speed gear that would be real progress,...

Re: BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15a

OK, I took a small almost 11 mile ride today to check out the system. Tom gives it two thumbs up!!! I went up and down all the big grades that normally kick my butt and kicked theirs!!! The steepest one is the hill down to the water treatment plant, a 15% ish for about a mile and I peddle about 10mp...

Re: BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15a

Hi, some advice Nice setup and yes not surprised with the speed that you are seeing however that's a lot of power to reliably push through a BMC, you are running 66V at 35A, that's over the limit for those motors and controllers. The old school xltye controllers as you are using will work but the s...

They really changed the new ones...looks a lot easier to get on to. Mine is about 40 inches at the sea...

BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15amp

Hi all, Been here for a bit reading and learning and decided on Ilia's BMC 600w geared hub. I love to ride my bike but I have 35 mile limit before my butt gives out not to mention I'm beat to shit. I can keep a 15 to 16 mph average but I've seen all the sights I can starting from my house. So I figu...

Re: Where to buy lipo?

Hobby King for the lipo. But the shipping is wierd. One order goes fast, another takes forever. The package will not be labeled batteries. Occasionally one pack will arrive defective. You can't ship it back so it's yours. Oh well, they are cheap, huge c rates, and you learn to buy a few extra. For ...

Re: I am having a problem and I need some help...

One thing about a123s is that they do naturally sag under heavy amp draw. When we used them for R/C helicopters you had to over gear for the headspeed that you wanted after the initial spool up. a123 cells are kinda like "torque" where as lipo's are like "horsepower". a123s drop voltage and then hol...

Building a harness for my 18s3p lipos for my bike.

I've been building battery packs for years (nicad, E-molie and a123!) and know my way around them pretty good but today I'm stumped. On my e-bike I'm going to run a 18s3p lipo setup. So I know how to parallel and series connectors but after building my harness tonight it dawned on me that this is da...

What voltage can I run on my son's Mini-Moto Go Kart safely?

I bought this about 6 years ago for my son...it was a bit of a let down to say the least. The 36 volt 12 amp pack was bad from the git go and only gave short run time. After about a year I decided to buy another battery and the company sent me a new battery for free but still was disappointing as fa...

What voltage can I run on this Mongoose scooter?

After the lead batteries took a dirt nap I built a a123 pack for one of my kids scooter. The stock set up was 2-12 volt 7 amp batteries (24 volts but I think the amps were 7 each....I think!) so I built a 9s4p a123 pack so I didn't kill the controller. With me on the scooter (210 lbs!) I can get 18 ...

Re: Ae-line 1st build

I have been reading up a bunch for my first build I just started. I'm going to tell you to go R/C motor for most torque, next would be geared hub (route I went!) and then direct drive hub. Since my grades max at 15% the geared hub was my best choice with a budget in mind. I went with the BMC, Ilia i...
