Re: Astro 3205 motor on Cyclone planetary gear

the Astro 3205 will make noise but its like a TURBO JET ENGINE spooling up and no where near the unpleasant sound of a cyclone That sounds quite unpleasant to me Mike, and I can only imagine how much worse the Cyclone gear reduction will make it. Avandalen, You're oversimplifying the efficiency gai...

Re: Cyclone ebike motor efficiency 74% instead of 97%

I found my old notes where I had measured the phase resistances of two different Cyclone motors, both of them the standalone (w/o internal controller) motors that have the same characteristics as the "500 watt" motor, but without the internal controller. The "500 watt" motor looks the same as the "...

Re: Astro 3205 motor on Cyclone planetary gear

Okay so to the crank (chainring) you have sufficient reduction for 12S 7500 RPM down to 75 RPM (theoretical) RPM... which wind is your 3205? What kV? On that note, it should work well enough but... I caution you not to push too much power into the cyclone gearbox... maybe 1.5X and perhaps 2.0 but I...

Re: Mid drive motor with spur gear instead of chain

I finally will use a gear, the gear ratio = 95t/12t = 7,917. This is much larger than can be achieved with a chain or belt.

Re: Astro 3205 motor on Cyclone planetary gear

What is the total reduction of the gearbox your intending for use with the 3205? What is the output gear and the driven sprocket/gear on the freewheeling cranks? My concern is cyclone motors run about 3K RPM and for the 32XX series Astro motors they need to maintain about 7500 for 90-94% efficiency...

Re: drive change cyclone kit

Hi K Harvey, I want to calculate the efficiency of the Cyclone motor and gearbox because there is no accurate data available. If you have the Cyclone motor, can you measure the winding resistance and the motor constant V/rpm for me? See here: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=662...

Astro 3205 motor on Cyclone planetary gear

Because the Cyclone mid-drive motor has a low efficiency, see http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=66278 , I want to use a 3205 Astro motor instead. The Astro 3205 motor has an efficiency of 90% to 95%; I have checked this with the motor parameters. The Cyclone planetary gear is goo...

Re: Cyclone ebike motor efficiency 74% instead of 97%

Bill Bushnell has done measurements, the efficiency is a poor 74% instead of 97%: http://mrbill.homeip.net/albums/cyclone ... 60_eff.pdf if you read on the bottom of bills page he estimates that the motor to rear wheel losses where he measures the power is 13% i think this is quite optimistic for a...

Re: Mid drive motor with spur gear instead of chain

Polychain is available in 5mm pitch too. That pitch can go down to 12 tooth IIRC. One other item related to power handling with toothed belts is tooth engagement. If you add an idler wheel to increase the amount of belt wrap p around the small pulley, you will increase torque handling tremendously....

Re: Mid drive motor with spur gear instead of chain

A timing belt is the narrowest of the available belt options to transmit a given load. Do you know a suitable timing belt that handles 350W and what is the width? 8mm pitch Gates Polychain in 10mm width should do the job. 14 tooth is the smallest tooth count in that pitch and belt type however. Mat...

Re: Cyclone mid drive motor efficiency 97% ?

Maybe I use the Cyclone gearbox with a Astro 3205 motor:
http://www.astroflight.com/3205
I've done simulations with the Astro 3205 in Excel, the efficiency including the gearbox would be greater than 90% in a large working range.

Bill Bushnell has done measurements, the efficiency is a poor 74% instead of 97%: http://mrbill.homeip.net/albums/cyclone_motor/efficiency_curves/cyclone_360_eff.pdf This low efficiency does not surprise me because the fill facor is very low: http://mrbill.homeip.net/albums/cyclone_motor/mediafiles/...

Re: Mid drive motor with spur gear instead of chain

avoid spured gears if you want it to be silent. they make a high pitched noise. i quote myself. by "spured gear" i was referring to STRAIGHT spured gears. as you already mentioned you should use skew or helical gears. this of course needs different bearings as you then have not only tangential forc...

Re: Mid drive motor with spur gear instead of chain

The statement that toothed belts use alot of power is not generally true. The issue would be high rpm. Below 15,000 rpm a toothed belt is efficient, quiet, and very long lasting. Chains are extremely noisy and inefficient at rpm above 2,000 in my experience. They are definitely cheap to work with, ...

Re: Mid drive motor with spur gear instead of chain

Hi avandalen, Do you have an engineering background? You will need to calculate any shock forces that the gear train will be subject to & size according to that parameter. Best practice will have a shock absorption system & maximum torque limiting (slipper clutch) mechanism to protect the gear teet...

Mid drive motor with spur gear instead of chain

Cyclone ebike motor efficiency 97%

According Cyclone, the maximum efficiency of the mid-drive motors is 97%, but I don't believe that, this is impossible. Maybe it's a typing error: 79%. To create the efficiency graph, we just have to know the motor resistance, motor constant kv and the no load current. Who knows these values or can ...

Battery fuel gauge discharges e-bike battery

I have seen that e-bike batteries may drain by itself. Batteries charged to 40%, which is a good practice to extend lifetime, were completely discharged after one month. So I opened a battery and tried to investigate what happened. By doing measurements at the electronics, I found out that the cause...

Shimano Deore XT brake lever switch with Hall effect sensor

Here is a method to build a switch into a brake lever; the brake lever doesn't have to be replaced and no external switch is needed. I use Hall effect sensors as switch, because they are reliable, watertight, small, and inexpensive. Used is the SS411P, but almost every hall sensor may be used. The 5...
